Rio de Janeiro - A Brazilian truck driver rose from the grave recently.
A day after a gang shot Pedro da Silva Correa, 43, and threw him into
a tomb in a cemetery, he pushed the cement lid off and climbed out.
"He walked all the way to the hospital covered in blood," said a
hospital spokeswoman, Sandra Santos. "The whole incident has given
people quite a fright."

A former employee walked into a Regina, Saskatchewan bar
one night and spent a number of counterfeit $100 bills. Inside
the bar, there are eight bartenders to buy drinks from. He went
around to each bartender buying one drink, paying $100 and

was short $800.00, the staff of the bar remembered exactly who

After being released on bail for an armed robbery, a 35 year-old
Philadelphia man was anxious to get some cash for his drug habit.
He entered a bar with a gun and demanded the cash. The bartender
obliged
and gave him the receipts from the register. The defendant then fled
back upstairs to his residence. Ten minutes later, police arrived and
arrested him at the kitchen table, counting the money. Unfortunately

Two thieves caused several thousand dollars damage to a
funeral home in Arab, Alabama recently while trying to steal
gas from a van parked outside the building. The pair had used
a knife to cut a hole in the van's fuel tank and were draining the
gas into a container. The plan "blew apart" when one of the
thieves lit a cigarette lighter so they could see how much gas
they had gotten.

Police in Madeira Beach, Fla., were
called to a fight between two fishermen. Pinellas County sheriff's
deputies say that Garth Spacek, 42, was beating Frank J. Ashmus, 46,
over the head with a beer bottle. Ashmus struck back by stabbing
Spacek
-- with the bill of a dead swordfish. He was reported in fair
condition
in a local hospital. Both men were arrested. "We don't see this kind
of

Assistant professor Rod Yellon at Canada's University of
Manitoba
got a ticket for running a stop sign, but he avoided a court
conviction
for four years by winning at least eight postponements to his trial.
Yellon argued stop signs were unconstitutional because the word
"stop"
is "vague". He also tried to argue that stop signs don't have
"standards and frequencies of calibration, performance and testing."
After missing a court appearance, he said that his mind had been
"sucked into a black hole," making him forget his court date. When he
recently tried for another delay, Judge Murray Howell refused the
motion. Yellon walked out on court proceedings and was convicted in
absentia on the testimony of the officers who had ticketed him.
Yellon

Retired Marine Corps Gen. Joseph J. Foss, 86, arrived
at
the airport in Phoenix, Ariz., to fly to the east coast, but was
stopped by airport security because he was carrying something the
security screeners apparently deemed suspicious: a Congressional
Medal
of Honor. "I kept explaining that it was the highest medal you can
receive from the military in this country, but nobody listened,"
Foss,
the former governor of South Dakota, says. "They just didn't know
what
it was but they acted like I shouldn't be carrying it." He got it in
1943 from President Franklin Roosevelt after shooting down 26 enemy
planes in the Pacific. "It states all that stuff on the back of the
medal." So why was he carrying the medal? "I had it with me this time
to show to cadets at the U.S. Military Academy at West Point" --

flies a lot, but came under special scrutiny when he tried to fly
home
from Washington, D.C., to Michigan, since he was wearing a knee
brace,
has surgically implanted pins in his ankles, and a metal hip.
Security
screeners forced the congressman to remove his shoes, socks, knee
brace, and pants, and ran a metal detector over his boxer shorts. "I
complied, but tried to do it with some small bit of dignity," he
said.
He never told the screener he was a congressman because " I don't
want

Edward Christopher was at his bank in
Stockton,
Calif., when two men came in and robbed it. As they tried to escape,
Christopher, 76, jumped the men and managed to rip open the bags they
were using to carry their loot, spilling most of it on the floor. The

An unnamed 58-year-old woman in Fullerton, Calif., was getting

her car when a man demanded her keys. She could see a gun tucked into
his waistband. "Just a minute," the woman told the carjacker, "let me

reeling over a scandal involving mayor Koleen Brooks. Just as a
meeting
of the Board of Selectmen was to convene, Brooks was issued a
citation
charging her with disorderly conduct after allegedly exposing her
breasts at a bar in town. Brooks, 37 and a former stripper, concedes
that she has exposed herself in bars in the past, but says she has
not
done so since being elected. A lie, says assistant director of public
works Howard Kimbrel. "There is no doubt that she did," he told the

A sheriff's deputy in Santa Cruz,
Calif., noticed a car weaving down the road and pulled it over. The
driver wasn't intoxicated, he was 12 years old. "He was weaving
because
he couldn't see over the dashboard," said Kim Allyn, the department's
spokesman, noting the boy "was no taller than 4 feet. The deputy
thought he had a drunk driver, but he ended up with a punk driver."
The
boy's reaction to being told he was under arrest? "Boy! My girlfriend
is going to be mad at me!" The car turned out to be stolen. "I think
he's going to be grounded for the rest of his natural life," Allyn
said, marveling at the kid's audacity. "This guy has already got a
girlfriend, he's got a car -- even though it's not his -- and he's
got

Tracy Vickers of St.
Petersburg, Fla., was sitting in his car at a gas station waiting for
the car in front of him to move. A man got out of that car and came
over to his window and asked the time. When he looked away to check,
"he reaches in the window, snags my chain and says, 'Gotcha',"
Vickers
said. "That made me mad." The gold chain is worth about $1,000. The
man
sped off with Vickers in hot pursuit. At one point the getaway car
took
a sharp turn and "was pretty much on two wheels," so Vickers "just
gave
him [a] nudge" which rolled the fleeing car over. Vickers bashed
through the driver's window and yanked the man out. "About the third
time I kneed him in the face, he threw the chain," said the 6-foot,
280-pound Vickers. Officers suggested that his actions were "not
recommended by police," but didn't charge him with any crime. (St.

Russ and Sandy Asbury were alone at their home in
Whitewater, Wis., when they heard a toilet flush. "I didn't know if
we
had ghosts or what," Russ said. "I couldn't imagine who or what was

The rate of violent street crime in London, England,
is about double that of New York City, but it's not all that bad, say
British politicians. The public's fear of crime is really due, they
say, to signs the police put out asking for witnesses to come
forward.
They argue the yellow signs reading "Murder", "Rape" or "Armed
Robbery"
are so numerous they're scaring people. One town council "was so
concerned it asked local officers to stop using the signs and wanted
to
be consulted before any more were used," but police say the signs are
vital to getting information to help solve crimes. (Reuters)

An honor student is fighting the "zero tolerance"
weapons policy at his school. Taylor Hess, 16, who has never even
been
in detention before, was expelled for a year from L.D. Bell High
School
in Hurst, Texas, after a bread knife was found in the bed of his
parked
pickup truck. "At no point did I have any idea that knife was in my
truck," Hess says. The knife had apparently fallen out of a box he
had
delivered to a charity the night before. Not relevant, says the
school,
even though the local police refuse to press charges because Hess was
not in legal possession of the knife. Principal Jim Short agrees that
Hess has been "an exemplary student," but "zero tolerance makes you
feel you lose your judgment you might otherwise be able to afford."

When Robert K. Sites III, 37, arrived at work at
Brentwood Middle School in Pensacola, Fla., school officials noticed
he
was "in an agitated and nervous state," had dilated pupils and
"rambling, unfocused" speech. School officials ordered a drug test,
which came back at 50 times the cutoff for a positive indication of
cocaine. He was fired, but he appealed to his union, which filed a
grievance. An arbitrator has ruled that the school district must
rehire
Sites at full pay and benefits. Then Sites must see a substance abuse
counselor, complete a rehabilitation program, and may return to work
if
he then tests negative for drugs. "We are expelling kids for taking
aspirin," complained school superintendent Jim Paul. "To think we
would
have to take someone back into a school...who has been proven to take
cocaine is an outrage." However, counters a union spokesman, "There
is
nowhere in board policy, law or contract where zero tolerance for

The Town of Niagra, N.Y., has identified a significant fire
danger: one of its two fire departments. The entire squad of Niagara
Fire Company No. 1 was suspended by the town after an audit by an
independent expert determined the squad's practices present "an
imminent danger to themselves, the town's other fire company and town
residents." Town Supervisor Steven C. Richards said the board of
supervisors will allow the fire company to continue its training

Dale Rooks, a crossing guard at Suter Elementary School in
Pensacola, Fla., made news when he tried to fool speeding motorists
into slowing down by wrapping an old hair dryer with black electrical
tape to make it look like a radar gun.
Inspired, a group of fifth-graders at the school set up a lemonade
stand and used the proceeds to buy Rooks a real radar gun. "It looks

NXT in Cambridge, England, has introduced its first
product: $45 stereo speakers that are made out of cardboard, designed
for people who give parties and are afraid guests might ruin their
more
expensive loudspeakers. But that's not the company's ultimate dream.
They hope to be able to produce speakers so cheaply that companies

install them in their packaging. That way, manufacturers will be able
to play commercials from the packages to people walking down store

Airlines have responded to terrorist attacks with
myriad new security measures. Australia's Qantaslink "cordoned off"
an
airliner after a passenger spotted white powder -- on a pastry
included
with his in-flight meal. Meanwhile, Northwest Airlines has announced
it
will no longer serve powdered coffee creamer or artificial sweeteners
with coffee to combat the fear of anthrax bioterrorism. "We did this
to
reduce the unnecessary delays and concern that false alarms relating
to
white powdery substances are causing our customers," claims airline
spokesman Kurt Ebenhoch. While passengers would still be allowed to
bring their own sugar substitutes, "we'd rather they didn't."

Police in the Slovak Republic were worried
at
first -- a woman called to say she had received an unsolicited, thick
envelope in the mail. Then the calls started coming by the dozens.
"Many people called police and civil defense specialists, who had to
check the envelopes," a police spokesman said. Investigation found
that
an ad agency hired by Proctor & Gamble had sent 70,000 of the
envelopes
out with a free sample. "Who would guess immediately that there could
be something as innocent as a maxi-pad inside?" The campaign brought

reports of "suspicious powder". The Times of India, noting hundreds
of
unfounded reports, headlined with the best advice: "Relax, it Could
Be
Just Talcum Powder". In Kansas, a woman called police to say anthrax
had been dropped on her car from an airplane -- it was bird
droppings.
The American Express office in Bahrain called for help when someone
found powder -- powdered milk. A mail center in England was evacuated
after powder was found there -- candy crushed by a sorting machine.
And
in Linwood, Ohio, a man called 911 after he found an envelope on his
desk was full of powder ...left by his only employee as a joke. The
employee was not only fired, but arrested: he faces 15 months in
prison

has announced plans to "rewrite" the Bible, adding information from

Dead Sea scrolls about the "life and times" of Jesus as a "political
activist". This won't cause consternation among believers around the
world, says one Biblical scholar. "There has never been a settled,

Kansas State Senator Kay
O'Connor admits she doesn't think women should have the right to
vote.
When asked by the Johnson County League of Women Voters to attend the
League's "Celebrate the Right to Vote" luncheon, she told the group
"You probably wouldn't want me there because of what I would have to
say." And what would that be? "I'm an old-fashioned woman," the nine-
year senator says. "Men should take care of women, and if men were
taking care of women we wouldn't have to vote." She told a reporter
that women should stay home and raise families, rather than being
"forced" to vote and serve in the legislature. Women have had the
right

Oak Brook, Ill., Aramark
employee Nolan Lett, 57, was hurt trying to enter his office
building.
He tried to get in one door, but two Canada geese blocked his way. He
went to another door, and a third goose blocked him. "It started
acting
crazy," Lett said. "I tried to hurry in the building, but it flew at
my
face. It was very ferocious." As he turned to run, he fell and broke
his wrist. Aramark refused to pay his worker's compensation claim for
the injury, so he sued. However, his attorney couldn't find any
similar
cases on which to base their claim -- the closest case was a security
guard who was hit by a stray bullet in a bad neighborhood. When
attorney Steven Dyki argued that Lett's building "was a 'high-goose'
area, as opposed to a high-crime area," Aramark settled the case for

Detrick Washington, 25, was at his business partner's San
Francisco, Calif., home office when two men forced their way in. The
robbers got $3,000 from the safe, but figured there must be more and
beat and cut their victims to get them to talk. "I'll go and kill the
kids and that girl if you don't give me the rest of the money," one
of
the robbers said. While they ransacked the home, Washington saw his
chance: one robber put his gun down, and Washington grabbed it. When
the robber lunged at him, Washington shot him. He then handed the gun
to his partner to cover the other robber and went to call police.
"Stay
down! Don't move! Don't get up!" his friend told the second robber
after Washington left the room. Then Washington heard, "He's getting
up, he's getting up!" and a shot rang out -- the second robber was
killed too. "He took a chance. I believe we could call him a hero,"
police Inspector Armand Gordon said. Washington "basically saved five
people's lives, including his own" by grabbing the gun. Police ruled
the shooting justified, yet Washington is in jail: he is on parole
from
a previous drug conviction, and parole rules say parolees cannot
"possess" a firearm. Because Washington grabbed the robber's gun, he
was in "possession" of the weapon and violated his parole. (San

only

became unruly in a bar. When a waitress refused to serve him any more
liquor, he allegedly burned her with his cigarette, then pulled out

Police in Brechin, Ont., Canada, made a huge haul
of
marijuana, netting 20,000 plants -- 50 truckloads. Deciding it was
too
much to burn, they buried it at a landfill. Big mistake. "The first
night, there were 35 guys out there," said a head shop owner. Once

spread, "there were whole rows of guys with shovels digging it up all
night and hauling it away in trucks." Police finally wised up and
started arresting people at the dump, charging them with possession

When an unnamed man's friend was sentenced to jail in a
drunk driving case in Stockholm, Sweden, he volunteered to serve the
jail time for him. "I wanted to go to jail to stop myself from
drinking
for a few weeks," the 51-year-old man said. "My pal didn't think it
would work. He agreed to let me try. I borrowed his ID card and
identified myself as him at the prison." The ruse was discovered
after
two weeks. His friend has been ordered to report for his full jail
term, and the man has been convicted of perjury and impersonation.

The City Council in Southampton, England, was going to chop
down a 60-year-old tree until local residents protested. After the
Council decided to save the tree, it announced the decision by
writing

On an overnight British Airways flight from Phoenix,
Ariz., to London, an American man and a British woman were disturbing
other passengers because they were too "noisy" while sharing a fully
reclining seat. After flight attendants asked them to "keep it down,"

Professor Brian Pronger of the
University of Toronto, Canada, has received a C$145,000 (US$110,000)
grant from the Social Science and Humanities Research Council to
catalogue and research a gigantic new collection donated to the
university -- a pornography collection: 500 books, 800 magazines,
2,000
videos, 300 computer CDs, plus academic studies and court
transcripts.
"The collection tells us a lot about our society now," says Pronger,
a
professor of Physical Education, "but think of its value to
researchers
50 or 100 years from now. It will be like going into the ruins of
Pompeii." The collection is quite varied, he says, with titles
ranging
from "Spank Your Buddy" to "Velvet" magazine. "Some of it is from
Italy

An unidentified man in Wichita, Kan.,
checked into an emergency room because he couldn't get the wire coat
hanger out of his throat. As best he could with a hanger stuck in his
throat, the man explained he had accidentally swallowed a cocaine-
filled balloon that "someone" had slipped into his drink, and he
straightened out a coat hanger to fish it out. He apparently got the
balloon out, but then couldn't remove the hanger. A friend took him
to
the hospital. Police say that if the cocaine is ever found, the man

"The
Chair" (ABC's show) and "The Chamber" (Fox's) are both quiz shows.
"Chair", hosted by former tennis champion John McEnroe, hooks a heart
monitor to contestants. If they fail to keep their pulse rate down,
they lose. On "Chamber", contestants are put into a booth and asked
questions while suffering from "environmental stimulants" -- loud

After 13 years, the industry group Phonographic
Performance Malaysia has announced it is changing its name to Public
Performance Malaysia. The licensing and royalty board says it has to
change its name because people don't know what a "phonograph" is
anymore and think the first word of the name is "Pornographic". PPM's
head, Tan Ngiap Foo, said he was tired of people asking why he ran
such
a "dirty" organization. "I have clients who purposely write PPM
checks
as 'Photographic Performance Malaysia' just to avoid phonographic,"
he
said. The organization's board of directors decided to change the
name
rather than continue to suggest critics needed to consult a
dictionary

threatening to sue California-based BeProud, a "leading retailer of

products," over the retailer's newest addition to its "American

David Ruppert, 21, stopped by the York County, Pa.,
Prison to visit Robert Haley, 18, who was being held on robbery
charges. Ruppert had thought he was in the clear, even though he was
also involved in the robbery, police say. "He probably went there to
find out if Haley was gonna rat on him," said West Manchester

Police Detective Jeffrey Snell. Police looking for Ruppert were told

had gone to the prison to visit Haley. "As he was walking out, he was

Michael Anthone Jacobs, 18,

committed a string of robberies in Mesa, Ariz. But things didn't go
particularly well, witnesses say. At the first, he dropped his gun --
and it broke. At the second, he had to pause during his getaway to

The supervisors of the Township of Locust, Pa., have
unanimously passed a new ordinance banning public nudity in the town
limits, including "the showing of covered male genitals in a
discernible turgid state." Township attorney Todd Kerstetter promises

with his fear of terrorism through art, drawing the burning World
Trade
Center towers. He was proud of his work: he taped the picture up near
his study cubicle at school in High Ridge, Mo. "When I asked him why

Disneyland has taken away the guns used to "shoot"
a
rampaging hippo on the Jungle Cruise ride, park officials confirm, as
well as removed from sale toy guns in Frontierland and Adventureland,
"space-age" toy guns in Tomorrowland, and depictions of rifles from

Sawyer Island, citing the need to "keep up with today's
sensibilities."
The Jungle Cruise boat captains don't even call attention to the
charging hippo anymore. The move was applauded by People for the
Ethical Treatment of Animals, with a spokeswoman noting that shooting
blanks at a mechanical hippopotamus is "really a form of animal

J.P. Parshall's landlord was going to cut down a tree in his
yard in Lacey, Wash. "I was sitting there one day and thinking, 'I

what I can make out of that'," Parshall said. "I told him to leave a

says most passerby like the carving, but a few have complained to the
sheriff, who refuses to take action. "We don't have a county

Several police officers in Denver, Colo., say
they
saw a city janitor argue with his boss -- and then watched as he left
carrying a steam cleaner and a vacuum cleaner out through the police
department's front door. Robert Martinez, 45, "told his supervisor
that
he was taking them next door to the city and county building," an
officer said, but when he came back and loaded up two computers and
carried them out, too, they decided to follow him. Martinez was
arrested two blocks from the station after he passed the turn to the

Lillie Clouse, 80, was
obviously tired of her Toledo, Ohio, neighbors playing music too
loud.
She demanded the man across the street turn down his radio. Police
say
that when he refused, she went home and got her shotgun and fired a
round from her porch. She managed to hit two children who were

nearby, but because the shotgun shell was 42 years old, it had lost

power and the pellets didn't even pierce the kids' clothing. Clouse
was

fighting with two other men. When police arrived -- finding several

the men duking it out in the water -- Worthern and the Sutherlands

General Store in North Little Rock, Ark., when clerk Shannon Hindman

Mall security officers in Colma, Calif., called police
when they spotted two men trying to break into a locked car with a

hanger. Investigating officers say they found that John Mack, 50, and
Charles Mitchell, 44, had been stealing from stores and came out to

caught on to a fraud scheme after he noticed a customer's company

Alfalfa sprouts, common on salad bars,
contribute to health. Bad health, that is. "Sprouts can be a
hazardous
food," says Dr. Janet C. Mohle-Boetani of the California Department
of
Health's Division of Communicable Disease Control. "Seeds can be
contaminated before sprouting, and no method can eliminate all
[contamination] from seeds." After studying multiple outbreaks of
salmonellosis and one outbreak of E. coli O157 in California,
researchers found that alfalfa and clover sprouts were responsible
for
half, sickening nearly 23,000 people. Washing them doesn't help, they
warn, since "bacteria on the seed surface can become internalized

A gas station cashier in Raleigh, N.C., says Mark D. Fisher,
46, bought 49 cents' worth of gasoline, which he put into a plastic
bottle, and asked for a pack of matches. Then, police say, he walked
over to the parking garage at the building where he works, set fire

flames. In his hurry, Fisher forgot that there was a two-storey drop

A boycott of the city of Cincinnati,
Ohio,
called by local Black religious leaders after a police shooting of an
unarmed Black man, has cost the city $10 million in lost revenues in
its first eight months, the city estimates. The cancellation of the
Progressive National Baptist Convention is the biggest blow so far,

can't afford to give employees raises, so they're giving them stuffy-
sounding job titles instead. A receptionist might be called the "Head

employment agency spokesman says such "up-titling" is helpful, since

Bromwell Elementary School in Denver, Colo.,
wanted
to teach its students about the cycle of life on the prairie.
Teachers
planted a garden with 20 native grasses, and now, three years later,
want to demonstrate the importance of fire by burning the garden so
students can see it spring back to life. "Proper management of these
kinds of ecosystems demand this kind of approach," says principal
Frank
Bingham. But city officials say the school cannot burn the garden
because the smoke would pollute the air. Instead, it suggests busing
the 300 students to the Denver Botanical Garden to see its prairie
grass exhibit. The Colorado Air Pollution Control Division estimates
the garden burn would emit about 8 pounds of particulates into the
air.
It also calculated that school buses emit 13 pounds of particulates
per
bus per hour. (Denver Post) ...Showing the kids inane bureaucracy in
action is probably a better lesson anyway.

Richard Ankrom, 46, an artist in Los Angeles, Calif.,
planned his latest masterpiece, a combination paint and performance
work, for two years: he altered a major road sign on the Harbor
Freeway
in downtown. He put up his work in broad daylight, but was unnoticed
because he was dressed as a road worker. The audience: 150,000
motorists per day. The payoff: no one noticed, not even state
transportation engineers. The plan was to announce the project a year
later, but a friend tipped off the press after 9 months. The
modification, done to exact Federal Highway Administration
specifications, helps motorists navigate a complicated transition
ahead. "The experts are saying that Mr. Ankrom did a fantastic job,"
said a Caltrans spokeswoman. "They thought it was an internal job."
The
agency plans to leave the modification in place, since it is in fact
helpful to motorists. Ankrom says helping out motorists "was the
whole

When an unnamed 8-year-old boy in Temple
Terrace, Fla., missed his school bus, he popped into his uncle's car
and drove himself to school through rush-hour traffic. The
18-year-old
uncle, who had been teaching the boy how to drive, was being
questioned
by police after police found the car was stolen. The boy was not
arrested, but he was suspended by Riverhills Elementary School for
endangering himself and others. Fellow students were wowed. "How
could
a second-grader know how to drive?" wondered a 10-year-old girl. "I
thought maybe he'd be like a third grader or something." (St.

Geremino T. Ranallo, 65, and Warren G. Jacoby,
50,
have been convicted of disorderly conduct in Franklin Township,
Penn.,
after the two used a can of joke "fart spray" in a local supermarket.
"It smelled like somebody had let a real stinker in there," said one
witness. "It was pretty nasty." Customers ran from the store, leaving
their purchases behind as Ranallo and Jacoby were "snickering and
laughing." Police found the can of spray, plus a "remote-controlled
fart machine used to mimic the sounds of flatulence." Municipal Court
Judge Joseph W. Steinhardt, noting that Ranallo "has a fart
fixation,"
handed down a $502 fine plus court costs, and gave the bubbly duo the
choice of 30 days in jail or 90 days of community service. "I don't

Patrons at a McDonald's restaurant in
Borehamwood, Hertfordshire, England, "watched in horror" as the store
manager used a broom to beat a loose rat to death. The rat,
apparently
a pet, was released by kids as a prank. "There were screaming kids

St. Mary's Catholic Primary
School in Whittlesea, Vic., Australia, has banned Band-Aids. They
reason the school could be sued if a teacher puts an adhesive bandage
on an owie and it sticks to the wound, making it hurt when it's
pulled
off later. Antiseptic is also banned. If students want Band-Aids for
their boo-boos, they must bring their own. "It's litigation gone
mad,"
complains Kathleen Hunter, mother of a 6-year-old student. "My
daughter

An America West Airlines crew on a flight from Phoenix,
Ariz., noted passenger James Walsh, 80, was "kind of stiff" when they
arrived in Des Moines, Iowa. He was in fact dead, and they aren't
sure
if he was alive when he boarded. Walsh's son Mark says he is "pretty
much convinced" his father died in Phoenix. He "just kind of slumped
over in his wheelchair and got real quiet" in Phoenix, but his father
was placed in the seat between Mark and his wife by airline
personnel.
"We never would have allowed a passenger who had passed away to board
an aircraft," an America West spokeswoman insists, though she did
acknowledge that the airline does allow unconscious people to board.

Kimberly F. Haggard, 39, hired to teach
an
after-school class in "kitchen chemistry" at Scholls Heights
Elementary
School in Beaverton, Ore., called the school with a bomb threat,
police
say. She then called back a few minutes later to see if her class had
been canceled. It wasn't, so she called in a second threat. By the
time
she reported for work at 3:00 p.m., police had traced the calls to
Haggard's home number. "The only excuse was she just wasn't up to
teaching a class today," said a police spokesman. She was arrested
when
she arrived for her class and charged with menacing, disorderly
conduct, telephone harassment and initiating a false police report.

down
an appeal by a man who wants his son to grow up. The son, Marco, is a
law school graduate and is 29 years old. He owns an expensive
apartment

carriages for Britain's South West Trains line. The manufacturer is
being careful to test each railcar carefully under actual British

Deputies at the Livingston County (Mich.) Jail were a tad
suspicious when Heather Rau Quigley, 19, arrived at 3:15 in the

Police in La Crosse, Wisc., are looking for a man
who went into a coin-op laundry, stripped naked, put his clothes in a
dryer, and then struck up a conversation with several female
customers
who were doing their laundry. He explained his clothes were wet, but
the women told police his clothes appeared to be dry when he put them
in the dryer. After the women started to laugh at him, the man put

clothes on and walked out. He is described as being in his mid-20s, 6

called by local Black religious leaders after a police shooting of an
unarmed Black man, has cost the city $10 million in lost revenues in

Bromwell Elementary School in Denver, Colo.,
wanted
to teach its students about the cycle of life on the prairie.
Teachers
planted a garden with 20 native grasses, and now, three years later,
want to demonstrate the importance of fire by burning the garden so
students can see it spring back to life. "Proper management of these
kinds of ecosystems demand this kind of approach," says principal
Frank
Bingham. But city officials say the school cannot burn the garden
because the smoke would pollute the air. Instead, it suggests busing
the 300 students to the Denver Botanical Garden to see its prairie
grass exhibit. The Colorado Air Pollution Control Division estimates
the garden burn would emit about 8 pounds of particulates into the
air.
It also calculated that school buses emit 13 pounds of particulates
per

Madison, Wis. - A court has sentenced a student at the University of
Wisconsin to 10 days in jail for killing a fellow student's pet parrot
by cooking it in a microwave oven. Chad Alvarez, 23, the son of the
university's football coach, was also ordered by the court to be put on
probation for five years after he pleaded no contest to felony theft of
a domestic animal and intentional mistreatment of an animal. Alvarez
put the parrot, named Iago, in the fraternity house microwave oven
after developing a grudge against the bird's owner, Cory Greenfield.
"I am very sorry for the pain I have caused everybody," Alvarez told
the court.

San Francisco, CA - It was Pearlean Fulcher's lucky day. She was pushed
onto subway tracks and run over by three cars but walked away with only
a bump on the head. Fulcher, 41, was released from the hospital soon
after the incident. "She fell in such a way that she landed lengthwise
with the track in a sort of depressed area," said Mike Healy, a
spokesman for the Bay Area Rapid Transit. "She was extremely lucky."
Witnesses said they saw a man push Fulcher in front of a train after
an argument, Healy said. The man, James Belcher, 46, was booked for
attempted murder.

Colo., is soliciting contributions to help Enron CEO Ken Lay retire.
The Lays had to sell several millions of dollars' worth of property

In a plea bargain, Canadian Robert Moisescu pleaded
guilty to robbing a bank of $32,538 in Champlain, N.Y. He was
captured
before he could get back over the border. But he is now objecting to
the seven-year sentence that his lawyer negotiated, saying the judge
should consider the exchange rate between the U.S. and weaker
Canadian
dollars. "Taking into account my Canadian criminal record -- at
current
exchange rates -- is only worth 62 percent of an American criminal
record," Moisescu wrote to Clinton County Court Judge Patrick McGill.
"Seven years Canadian is worth only four years in American."

Twenty employees at a nursing home in Newark, N.J.,
pooled funds to try for a piece of a $331 million lottery jackpot,
and
Angelito Marquez went to a liquor store to buy their tickets. The 19
others got suspicious when, after the drawing, Marquez called in sick
and told them there were no winning tickets. Then they found out that
a
winning ticket had been bought near Marquez's house. They hired an
attorney, and lottery officials investigated -- and found that
Marquez
really was sick, and that someone else had bought the winning ticket.
To be safe, Marquez hired his own lawyer, who theorized the other
employees "just put two and two together and got five." (Bergen

Female students arriving at a dance at Rancho Bernardo
High
School in San Diego, Calif., were asked if they were wearing
"appropriate" underwear under their dresses. Assistant Principal Rita
Wilson apparently wouldn't take the word of several girls -- she
demanded they lift their dresses to show they were wearing panties,
and
that they weren't thongs -- while other students and adults looked
on.
One 16-year-old student said Wilson yanked down her top, exposing her
bra, and a male student wearing a toga was forced to show he was
wearing shorts. A police officer who witnessed the events called the
inspections "totally out of line," but they didn't stop when he
suggested it. Many parents are demanding that Wilson be fired, and
some
are threatening lawsuits. So far, she has only been placed on
administrative leave while officials investigate for "a week or two."

British police are used to dealing with cat burglars but they said on Sunday they were hunting a chimpanzee who had robbed two London homes. A shocked Mustapha Riat awoke to find the cheeky monkey in his home in Hackney, east London, stealing his mobile phone. "I saw this hairy black chimpanzee coming through my window. It was broad and muscular and I was frightened of being bitten," Riat, 43, told the Sun newspaper. The chimp is also prime suspect in the burglary at a house nearby where part of a stereo was taken.

Authorities in east India said on Tuesday "green rain" seen by panicky villagers was actually bee feces with traces of honey and not some toxic chemical. Police said people in Sangrampur village, 60 km (38 miles) north of Calcutta, had seen two spells of what appeared to be green rain -- first on Friday and again on Sunday -- sparking a media frenzy of speculation that the "rain" could be harmful. "On studying the samples of condensed droplets we found they were feces of bees containing traces of honey excreted from a large swarm of bees flying overhead," D. Chakraborty, chief scientist of the state's pollution control board, told Reuters. He said the droplets contained pollen which gave them a greenish-yellow color.

Mass., knew they had their man when he ran out of gas. As officers
surrounded the vehicle, driver Ronald D. Raymond, 45, asked them to
"Hold on a minute. Let me finish my beer," police say. After draining
the can he tossed it on the floor with several other empties. Raymond
was charged with drunken driving, driving while drinking, failing to
stop for a police officer, speeding, driving with a suspended license

David Wild, 65, of B.C., Canada, is suing
the Canadian government for Cdn$3.1 million (US$1.95 million),
claiming
that his inability to sleep well has caused him emotional distress,
permanent headaches, blurred and double vision, loss of balance,
irritability and depression. The government is responsible for this,
he
says, because the guards at the prison where he's incarcerated for
murder come by at night to ensure he's still in his cell. He says the
prison's head-count policy is "inhumane" and has caused him to be

The 1,400-resident town of Nederland, Colo., says
their effort to draw more tourists with an offbeat festival is a
success. Their first "Frozen Dead Guy Days" celebrated the town's
most
famous resident, Bredo Morstoel, who died in 1989 but is being kept
frozen in a shed in town with hopes he can be defrosted and brought
back to life someday. The crowd was estimated at more than 400, which
is "more people than we ever have in one day," said the Chamber of
Commerce. However, the Colorado House of Representatives didn't get
into the spirit of the festival, voting down a resolution to declare
a
"Frozen Dead Guy Day" in the state. "The resolution is appropriately

William Earl Dykes, 40, was caught by security
cameras burglarizing a convenience store, and New Orleans, La. police
quickly caught up with him. He was carrying a duffel bag filled with
bottles of liquor, cartons of cigarettes, cigars and lighters
allegedly
taken from the store. "When confronted with the photographs," a
Tammany
Parish Sheriff's Office spokesman said, "Dykes said the perpetrator
is
his evil twin brother who follows him around, dresses in identical

Eric D. Davis, 31, should have planned his bank
robbery in Toledo, Ohio, more carefully. Police say that after the
heist Davis, running with the loot toward his getaway car, fell down.
When his driver panicked and sped off, Davis jumped into the next
available vehicle, which had two men in the front seat -- an unmarked
police car that just happened to be in the area. "He jumped in the
back
with the gun and told us to drive," said officer Anthony Duncan, a
16-
year police veteran who was sitting in the passenger seat in plain
clothes. "We just kind of looked at each other when he said it
again."
Duncan dove over the seat and wrestled the gun away. Davis was
charged
with bank robbery and two counts of kidnaping. (Toledo Blade) ...It

Tom Palmeri has been named "California Republican of the Year" by the
National Republican Congressional Committee. Palmeri is a Democrat.
The
Republican group said it doesn't know how Palmeri's name got into its

David Ray Hill, 44, of Great Falls, Mont., was released
six
years into his 10-year sentence for felony drunk driving. Five days
later, employees at a mini mart called police saying a drunk man
drove
to the store to buy alcohol. Hill was arrested. If found guilty,
officers say, it will be Hill's 11th DUI conviction. "I hope it was a

The Bible Society of Australia has introduced a new "Surfer's
Bible" to spread the gospel among wave riders. "Many surfers would

As John
Denham, the British Home Office Minister for Police and Crime
Reduction, addressed a gathering of police constables, he used the
term
"nitty gritty." There was a "chorus" of objections from the audience;
the word is "banned" from police use, he was told. "If I used 'nitty
gritty' I would face a disciplinary charge," PC Chris Jefford said.
The
Metropolitan Police says the term "is thought" to originate from the
18th century slave trade. The phrase "good egg" is also banned by the
department, officers told Denham, because it's "closely associated"
with "egg and spoon" which in Cockney rhyming slang means "coon"
which
is a racial epithet. A Met spokesman said there's not a list of
banned
words per se, but PCs are required to "make sure the language they
use

Construction workers in Dublin, Calif., watched a man
drive
up in a new-looking Volvo to their cement truck. He "asked the
concrete
workers to fill him up for a job he was doing," a police spokesman
says. While the driver remained behind the wheel, the workers aimed

A group of deaf people has sued California's San Francisco
International Airport, charging the facility flagrantly violates the
needs and rights of deaf travelers. The airport, which recently
completed an $840-million renovation, apparently did nothing to
upgrade
its services for the deaf and hard of hearing, such as erecting signs
to give travelers information about emergencies, and acknowledges it
does not have a sign language interpreter on staff. "We abide by the
current codes," claims airport spokesman Ron Fong. And while the
airport has text telephones for deaf travelers, the cords on the
airport phones are not long enough to reach them, making them
useless.
"That's not our fault," Fong says. "Our security people say if we
made
the phone cords any longer, they could be used as a weapon." (Los

Ivan Dremov won the
Senior Class President election at North Central High School in
Washington Township, Ind. Not so fast, said Principal C.E. Quandt. In
a
campaign video shown to students just before the vote, Dremov used a
rap music theme which included the line "Vote for Dre and pass the
Courvoisier" -- mimicking a popular lyric. Quandt says that
mentioning
Couvoisier, an alcoholic beverage, is a violation of the school's
"zero
tolerance policy against liquor, tobacco, drugs and sex." Dremov was
disqualified and the runner-up was named class president. Quandt said
he did not review the videos before they were shown because he didn't

Baytown (Texas) Junior School teacher Maria Ripke, a
10-year
teaching veteran, says the squirt gun she uses in class is a tool to
demonstrate kinetic energy. But parents Bryan and Dana Adkins say she
used the gun to squirt their son in class. When he objected he was
squirted in the face, says his mother Dana, who is a math teacher at
the school. The parents have filed assault charges against Ripke, but
she remains in class, teaching, pending the outcome of her Class C
misdemeanor citation. That shows the double standards at the school,
says Bryan, a police officer, noting that a student caught with a toy
hand grenade was suspended for 10 days. "This whole thing is
frivolous
harassment," claims the teacher's attorney, Frank Knight III. "This
is
just a police officer using his position to say that 'you can't treat

Suspicious employees at a grocery store in Mebane,
N.C., called police about a pickup truck driving around their parking
lot. When the driver saw the police approaching, he fled. Officers
chased him around the parking lot at 40 mph. When he finally stopped,
"he kept sticking his hands out the window to show us that he didn't
have a weapon," an officer said. "We just couldn't tell exactly what
it
was he was doing." At least, not until he got out, when officers
realized Eldridge Freeman Jr., 27, was trying to get dressed during
the
pursuit. "He had managed to get his T-shirt partially on, but that
was
basically all he was wearing," the officer said. "We also noticed
that
Mr. Freeman's hands and mid-section were both covered in Vaseline."

As cab driver Mitchell J. Lewis Jr., 49, drove in his cab to
Louis Armstrong International Airport in New Orleans, La., he made a
phone call. To the FBI. Agents say he warned them he was on the way
to
"cause trouble" with a gun at the airport "in the name of Saddam
Hussein." When stopped at the airport, Lewis pulled out a BB gun and

knife, police say. He was quickly subdued and arrested. So what was

Property developers in London,
England, always on the lookout for spots to build homes, have decided
to refurbish a 100-year-old public toilet into a housing unit. The
four-by-four-meter (13-by-13-foot) building will be expanded to two
storeys, and should fetch about 135,000 pounds (US$200,000), local
brokers say. "I don't think the fact that it was a loo will put
people
off," said the developer's spokeswoman. "It has its own front door."

ordered Microsoft to pull an ad for its Xbox game console off the air
after receiving scores of complaints, mostly from women. The ad shows
a
screaming woman giving birth; the baby shoots out, smashes through
the
hospital ward's window, and flies through the air. As the naked boy
flies along, he's screaming and ages to an old man, who crashes into
a
grave. The tag: "Life is Short. Play More." Microsoft said the spot
conveyed a "positive statement about life." The ITC said it "did not
agree that the advertisement conveyed a positive statement,"
particularly since the man's screams "throughout his life's journey
suggested a traumatic experience." (London Independent) ...Though
that's true to people's real life experience with most Microsoft
products.

"We have never had complaints before," says Dutch
Forestry Commission Director Jan Kuiper. About 100 signs at 25
campsites in the Netherlands were meant to depict the silhouette of a
man carrying a stick to mark where people can camp out. But a joke
leaflet "full of sexual innuendos about wild camping" has changed the
public's perception of the sign. Thanks to the suggestive leaflet,
people now don't see a stick, but rather think the cartoon man has a
large erection. Kuiper has ordered the signs removed. "Some people

When Laren Sims hanged herself in a jail cell in
Hernando
County, Fla., she left a suicide note to her lawyer asking him to sue
the jail -- for failing to prevent her suicide. "She's got a scam
going
even in death," said the prosecutor on her case. Sims, awaiting

checked on by jailers just 12 minutes before she was found hanging

Gary Wilke of Appleton, Wisc., was quite frustrated with
his
daughter's $2,600 home computer. He took it back to the store five
times, sat through house calls by technicians, and still it wasn't
working correctly. So he took it back to the Gateway Country computer
store yet again, put it on the floor and told technicians he would
take
care of it. He then went back to his car for a "large sledge hammer"
and smashed it to bits. Then "I said, 'Have a good day,' and I left,"
Wilke says. "I didn't want to cause any trouble. I wasn't there to
harm
anybody. It feels good in a way." Sheriff deputies met him at his
home
and arrested him on charges of disorderly conduct. He was released

Sheriff's deputies patrolling a music
festival
in Pasco County, Fla., couldn't help but notice Korey Bradd
Henderson,
25, of Lakeland, Fla., in the crowd: he was wearing a bright orange
uniform marked "Polk County Jail". The jail confirmed the uniform was
stolen, apparently when Henderson was released from there earlier

year. Deputies confiscated the suit and sent him on his way. But when
Henderson's probation officer got the police report on the incident,
he
ordered his arrest: Henderson was supposed to be on home detention,

had sworn that he had stayed home that weekend. He's now back in the

Jeffrey Price Barber, 44, of Richburg, S.C., thought it
would be a funny gag to pull on his wife: he smeared ketchup all over
himself, grabbed his .22-caliber rifle, fired a shot, and lay down on
the floor. When his wife heard the shot she came running, saw him
"dead" on the floor and called 911. Responding deputies weren't in a
laughing mood. They found Barber had a police record and charged him
as
a felon in possession of a firearm -- a felony. He pleaded guilty and

officials naming the school's sports teams the "Rockets" -- with the

Residents in Hooke, Dorset, England, were a bit shocked
when toasters and other appliances began talking. In Russian. "It's
unnerving," says John Dalton, chair of the Hooke Parish Council.
"Normally it just makes toast." The problem has been traced to a

Bus Driver Replaces Mental Patients
(in a South African newspaper)

HARARE, Zimbabwe (04-04) - After 20 mental
patients disappeared from his bus, the driver
replaced them with sane citizens and delivered
them to a mental hospital.

The unidentified bus driver was transporting
20 mental patients from the capital city of
Harare to Bulawayo Mental Hospital when he
decided to stop for a few drinks at an illegal
roadside liquor store. Upon his return he was
shocked to discover that all the mental patients
had escaped.

Desperate for a solution, the driver stopped at
the next bus stop and offered free bus rides to
several people. He then delivered them to the
mental hospital and informed the staff they were
easily excitable.

It took the medical personnel three days to uncover
the foul play.

The real mental patients are still at large.

A fellow robbed a supermarket of about $5000. The
local newspaper ran the story, but with the amount
given as $7000.The thief called the newspaper to
complain about the inaccuracy and to suggest that
maybe the store manager ripped off the extra $2000
and was unjustly blaming the thief. The people at the
newspaper kept him busy on the phone giving his
version of the story while the police traced the call
to a phone booth and arrived to arrest him while
he was still talking to the newspaper!

Barry Lyn Stoller, 38, of Kent, WA, wrote to the makers of
Ex-Lax, claiming the product didn't work and demanding
reimbursement of the $1.99 he paid. The New Jersey
based Sandoz Corporation immediately issued a refund
but mistook the amount, using Stoller's zip code. After the
error was discovered, King County authorities found Stoller
had deposited the check for $98002, withdrawn the money

radar gun the police were using when they caught her. She
then suggested that the radar gun that recorded her speed

When Lish Divan Taylor, 56, died, quite a few people
were ready to eulogize him at his funeral at the Greater Pine Grove
Baptist Church in Loxley, Ala., including several ministers. The Rev.

Tom Van Lokeren, 47, knew who had stolen two of his credit
cards, but police in San Francisco, Calif., refused to arrest the
suspect. So Van Lokeren bought a fishing net at Fisherman's Wharf,
plus
a can of pepper spray and a stun gun at a military surplus store, and
arrested the suspect himself. "I ran up after him, and I stunned him
on
the shoulder, then I used the pepper spray. [But] in all the ruckus,
I
ended up dropping the net. I never used it." The police finally took
it
from there, booking James Timothy Stevens, 21, on two counts of
theft.
Officers are too busy with emergencies to deal with "property
crimes,"
said Police Capt. James L. Dudley, explaining the department's
initial
refusal to help. "It's not a life-threatening situation." Police, he
added, "certainly don't encourage the public to make their own
arrest.

Airlines were arrested for trying to fly an airliner drunk, a
passenger
boarding an America West flight from San Francisco, Calif., to
Tucson,
Ariz., asked flight attendants if they had "checked the crew for
sobriety." The attendants took immediate action: they threw her off
the
plane. "Safety is no joking matter," explained America West
spokeswoman
Patty Nowack. "While this passenger may have been joking it is
difficult to determine if someone is joking or serious. We take any

Craig Anthony Gribben, 27, was trying to get
into
his car, but the key broke off in the lock. He asked the police in
Tauranga, New Zealand, for help. The officer was a tad suspicious
when
he noticed Gribben wasn't wearing any pants. A check of the car

was trying to get into revealed it wasn't his -- it belonged to a

police officer. He was arrested. Gribben's lawyer later explained

Sheriff's deputies in Gainesville, Fla.,
responded to a car alarm after a 911 caller said there was a man
locked
inside the car trying to kick his way out through a window. Deputies
arrived to find David Christopher Lander, 51, "trying to hide, all
scrunched down in the back seat," a sheriff's spokesman said. The
car's
alarm system automatically locked the doors when it was activated. "I
guess he thought deputies couldn't see him. Had he pushed the button
on
the driver's side door, he could have gotten out." Witnesses said
Lander reeked of alcohol. He was arrested and charged with burglary
and, since some of the car's contents were in his pockets, theft.

A man from Ontario, Canada robbed a Burlington bank using a Molotov cocktail.
He was unhappy about the amount of money
he got and started shaking the Molotov
cocktail around and threatened to throw it
in the face of the teller. He drew back his
arm like he was going to throw it and
dropped it instead. It fell at his side and exploded engulfing him in flames.

A security guard and several bank customers
were able to put out the flames with fire
extinguishers. He survived, but suffered
months of treatment for his severe burns
and he is scarred for life. After his
release from the hospital, he was charged
with armed robbery. He received ten years in prison. No one else was injured in the
explosion. In fact, the money was undamaged.

Somehow, it was thrown clear of the flames
during the explosion.

"He was trying to make his own fireworks,"
says
Bonnie Suchomski about her son, James Suchomski, 25, of Tampa, Fla.
He
and his friend Josh Edleman, 26, filled about 10 toy balloons with
explosive acetylene gas, apparently with plans to ignite them to
celebrate Independence Day. They put the balloons into Suchomski's
car,
got in, and slammed the doors. A spark ignited the balloons, blowing
up
the car and throwing the two men out. The car "looked like a sardine
can," said a Tampa Police bomb technician. "It was as if you just
took
the roof and peeled it off." Both men are expected to recover from
their burns, bruises and ear damage. "He's learned his lesson,"

Elliott Glapa, 19, told police in South
Milwaukee, Wisc., he wanted to perform a stunt that would get him on
the TV show "Jackass". He says he was copying something he saw on TV:
he poured gasoline on himself, lit himself on fire, and jumped into
Lake Michigan. Glapa survived uninjured, but police arrested him on
charges of underage possession and consumption of alcohol. Officers
also had the pleasure of informing him that "Jackass" stopped
production long ago. "The kids who do this type of thing when they
watch this on TV should pay more attention when it says, 'Don't try
this at home'," a police spokesman said. Glapa, who wants to be a
professional stunt man, says he hopes "next time I'll get it on

When robbers confronted a convenience store
clerk
in Hazleton, Penn., he says he was able to recognize one of them
because she was wearing her work shirt -- it had a patch reading
"Giant", the grocery store where the clerk shops. When the
unidentified
clerk commented on the shirt, the robber told him to hand over his
money or "My husband will stab you." The Giant store provided
employee
photos to police, and the victim immediately pointed to the one
showing
Colleen Fairchild. She and her husband James were arrested.

When Christopher J. Antus, 24, was pulled over
by
a state trooper in Bremen, Ind., for a traffic violation, Trooper
Jerrod Patty couldn't help but notice his bright orange T-shirt. It
read: "Fugitive. You never saw me." The lawman got a good chuckle
over
the shirt and even joked with Antus about it. "I said, 'All you have
to
do is tell me where you came from and I'll take you back'," Patty
says.
The jokes stopped when a routine computer check revealed Antus was
wanted on a felony warrant. After his arrest, Antus said the shirt

department, the town, the mayor, and the county sheriff's office for
$10 million, charging that his numerous arrests for trespassing are

property that he says he has a legal right to live on since he has

squatting there for over 10 years. Whenever officers try to arrest
him
for trespassing, he makes their job difficult by covering himself
with

Dennis Cohen, 47, had a problem with his
stove, so he decided to fix it himself. He disconnected the gas pipe

a new standardized final exam for history classes. Students are only
required to get 23 percent of the multiple-choice answers correct to
pass; to get an "A" they only need to get 50 percent correct. The

Astounded rangers at the Great Smoky Mountains
National Park, which stretches across parts of Tennessee and South
Carolina, arrested Michael Shaw, 38, of Grand Ridge, Fla., after he
allegedly attacked a black bear to keep it from killing and eating a
fawn. "He seemed to be quite put out" over the charges, a ranger
said.
"He thought he was doing the right thing." A park spokeswoman
theorizes
"he probably thought he was saving Bambi." The year-old bear was so
severely injured it had to be killed. Shaw has been charged with

More than 1 in 9 people in South Africa is HIV
positive. To help children cope with the staggering numbers, the
producers of "Sesame Street" plan to introduce an HIV-positive Muppet
to the South African version of the show, "Takalani Sesame". Sesame
Street Workshop says the female character would help kids understand
life with HIV. "We will be very careful to fashion our messages so
they
are appropriate to the age group," a spokesman said. "What do I do
when
you cut your finger? That sort of thing." But alarmed members of the
U.S. Congress demanded reassurance there would be no such character
in
the U.S. version of the show. There won't be, the producers say.

outside town on a date when he happened across a rattlesnake. To
"impress" his gal, he picked the snake up. "The snake was mature,"

Jacqueline Boanson of Cheltenham, England, was a bit perplexed
when she saw a deposit from a bookie into her bank account for 291.40
pounds (US$445). After calling the bookmaker, it was pieced together
that her debit card had been stolen from her mailbox and used to
gamble
at the horse races. The deposit was the winnings. The thief "would
have
needed complete ID matching the card to get paid in cash," said a
spokesman for Ladbrokes, so the winnings were paid back to the debit
card. He added that if the bet was a loser they would have refunded
the
stolen money, but since it was a winner they let her keep it since
"it
would seem a bit churlish to deprive Mrs. Boanson of her winnings."

surprised when investigating a suspicious person call to discover the
suspect was just out for a jog. At 11:30 at night. In the nude.

J. Claiborne, 43, was charged with indecent exposure, but officers

spokesman said, and didn't seem to have any mental problems -- "He

Keith Blauvelt was fishing near Sea
Girt, N.J., when he hooked something strange. "I thought it was a
piece
of wood and then I realized it was moving," he says. "I said, 'I
think
I see a dog,' and my dad looked at me like I was crazy. But my
brother
said, 'It is a dog.'" Not just any dog, a pit bull. The animal had
fallen off a boat into the water while its owner was scuba diving.
Shortly after Lorraine Rooker surfaced to find her dog was gone, the
Coast Guard called her to say Blauvelt had found it, and it was OK.

Josh Chapman, 23, set
up
a stunt in Squamish, B.C., Canada, for an "extreme sports" video.
First, there was a wall of burning gasoline. Extra gas was set up to
squirt on impact to make a fireball. A large, partying crowd was
brought in to watch. Chapman, whose job was listed as "sponsored
snowboarder", then got on a snowmobile, rode down the dry asphalt,
and
popped a "wheelie" into the wall of flames. But Chapman had forgotten
one key step in his setup: a fireproof suit. "He goes through this
big,
flaming wall of fire and, of course, ignites," said a Royal Canadian
Mounted Police spokesman. "He was extremely badly burned." Chapman

Police in Trowbridge, Wiltshire, England,
are investigating an attack on a 34-year-old man. The assailant
jumped
the unnamed man, then "stuck his teeth into the [victim's] eyebrow
and
bit it off," said Detective Constable Neil Le-Maire. "It's a
possibility that he ate it, as shortly afterwards a search was
conducted and there was no sign of the eyebrow." Le-Maire says there
was no real motive for the attack, and apparently the assailant was

Four 17-year-old boys in Gillingham, Kent,
England,
hid some alcohol and munchies in a loft. They decided it was time to
have a party when one of the boys' mothers went out of town. "We went
up to get the food and drink from our loft after we had stashed it
there because we didn't want our parents to find out," said one. Then
they realized they couldn't get out, and the boy's mother wasn't due
back for four days. They pushed and pushed on the trap door, but
couldn't get it to budge. After 17 hours locked in the loft ("All we
had was snacks and drinks to last us all that time") one of the lads
got the bright idea to pull on the door, rather than push as they had
done for 17 hours. It opened easily. (London Times) ...Normally, kids

Former pop star Adam Ant has pleaded guilty to making
threats. The 47-year-old Brit appeared in court under his real name,
Stuart Goddard, and will be sentenced later. The incident occurred

A radio station promotional contest in Toledo, Ohio,
awarded a car to Brian Root, 44, after he managed to keep touching
the
car longer than 49 other contestants -- six days. WKKO then learned
that Root was not one of its listeners, nor even an area resident.
Root
lives in Mobile, Ala., with his mother. He travels around the country
to compete in such contests and has won 16 of them since 1984,
earning
him about $160,000 by selling the cars. "Who would have thought of
something such as someone who travels from city to city to
participate
in these kind of contests?" said WKKO general manager John Potter.
Contest organizers say they plan to change the rules to prohibit
"full-

Facing the worst drought in years, many cities in
Colorado have issued outdoor watering restrictions. Which has led to
people reporting neighbors who water their yards to the police.
Officers in Morrison were called out on one such case. "We went over
there to issue a warning," says officer Chris Poundstone. "No one
answered the door, but we noticed a garden hose in the front yard,
stretched from the spigot around to the garden." They followed it and
found the dirt in back was "nice and damp" -- and then noticed what
was
planted there: marijuana. They retreated and waited for backup and a
search warrant, and arrested the woman at the house on charges of

Lothian University Hospitals Trust in Glasgow, Scotland,
decided employees were stressed, so a stress counselor started
sending
all 3,000 employees an e-mail "poem a day". Would-be poet Lynn
Ogilvie
then asked workers to tell her what they thought of her e-mails. "We
have chosen haiku, as the poems are very wee, with the intention of
creating a moment of pleasure," she wrote. "Do these tiny poems
create
a moment of pleasure or irritation?" The hospital e-mail system
almost
crashed under the deluge of replies pleading for the poems to stop.

big poem, A wee poem, Ah'm sick o'em!" wrote one. "Not a haiku, Does
not scan, Just a plea from an overworked man" wrote another. So did

hospital cancel the scheme? No: administrators have warned the staff
to

The CBS television network, which still

rights to the title "The Beverly Hillbillies", has announced plans to
create a new "reality" program using that title by recruiting an
actual
hick family, complete with a granny, and plopping them into a Beverly
Hills mansion outfitted with cameras for a year or more of on-air
voyeurism. "We're looking for a family from a very rural area that
hasn't been exposed to big-city life or luxuries of life in any way,"
says CBS spokesman Chris Ender. The show will follow the family as

Salesman Jay Sims called on Otis Stanbury in Long Eaton,

After Colorado passed a law allowing consumers to
register their telephone numbers on a "no call" list that
telemarketers
have to respect, David Hakala of Denver was one of the first to sign
up. He also was the first to sue a company that called him after the
ban went into effect. Hakala's legal strategy was clever: the law
allows citizens to sue for $500 from anyone who "makes or causes to
be
made" a phone solicitation, so he sued the actual caller, three
company
officials who approved the call and the corporate entity itself, then
added court costs for a total of $2650. "I had them cold," Hakala
says
after receiving a settlement from a Boulder financial firm. However,
angry members of the no call list discovered a loophole in the law
when
they were awakened by a late-evening recorded phone message from U.S.
Senate candidate Tom Strickland asking for votes. "The law is very
clear on the exception for political candidates," insisted
Strickland's
campaign manager, refusing to pledge not to continue such calls.

In Sweden, a bullterrier ate 1,000 crowns ($94) of its owner's money, but the bills were returned as nature took its course.

Of the two 500 crown bills, the first emerged the next morning undamaged, with the second to follow during an evening walk. "The bills are slightly yellow and I think I'll iron them," dog-owner Gunilla Gonon-Sabelstrom was quoted as saying.

In India, seven people have been arrested in the death of a young couple who were publicly hanged because of their relationship. The young couple, 19-year-old Vishal and 18-year-old Sonu, were from different castes in India's rigid social class system. Vishal was a high-caste Brahmin and Sonu was a member of the lower caste Jat community.

A pet kitten was accidentally washed when it jumped into the clothes washing machine when its owner wasn't looking. The cat survived for 20 minutes before being pulled to safety by its owner. According to a Danish paper, the three- month old kitten, Sylvester, was dizzy and blue from lack of oxygen when removed from the water, which was over 150 degrees Fahrenheit. Sylvester later recovered while under a vet's care.

An elderly couple that chartered a small plane on the pretext of having fun in the sky died when the plane plunged into the sea off the Florida Keys after they tried to hijack it to Cuba. The unidentified couple scuffled with the pilot, who escaped, when the Piper Cherokee was about 40 miles south of Key West, sending the small plane plunging into deep water in the Florida Straits between Key West and Cuba.

Fairgrounds located in a California suburb was the scene of an almost deadly gunfight. Not quite the OK Corral, but pretty close. The shoot-out involved two men disputing who should get a prize at a basketball-toss game. When the gunfight was over, eight people were rushed to the hospital with bullet wounds. The prize they were fighting over was a very large overstuffed Tweety Bird. The wounded victims all survived and none suffered any kind of permanent injury. Tweety was unharmed. Both shooters were arrested and will face at least eight felony charges for the wounds they inflicted upon the innocent by- standers. They were both such bad shots that they missed each other entirely.

robber
on record. When he decided to rob the First Union Bank in Winchester,
Va., he chose his own branch. The teller not only recognized him as a
customer, but his demand note was written on the back of a deposit
slip
imprinted with his name and Social Security number. Faced with the

Police responding to a house burglary in Tulsa,
Okla., were given a description of the suspect and shown which way he
ran. They quickly spotted Edward Jerome McBride, 37, and watched as
he
dove into the Arkansas River. "They began ordering the suspect to get
out of the river, but the suspect continued carrying the bag [of
loot]
and swimming farther from shore," a police spokesman said. Then
McBride
started calling for help. Two officers jumped in to try to rescue
him,
but they were too late -- he drowned. McBride couldn't swim very well
because the duffel bag he was dragging weighed 55 pounds. Even though
he dropped it before going under, he had "a significant amount" of
jewelry stuffed into his cargo pants pockets dragging him down.

A newspaper reporter sent to cover a police chase
in
Ostlendingen, Norway, stopped to pick up a hitchhiker to help him
navigate. After 10 minutes, "I started to be a bit suspicious,"
reporter Lars Gustavsen said, "but I was still surprised to find out
who he was" -- the car theft suspect the police were looking for. The
man was arrested. Meanwhile, a group of citizens chased a man
stealing
stereos out of cars in Topeka, Kan., but he got away. A few minutes
later, a man came up to one of the citizens, Justin Hollenbeck, and
asked for a ride to a local pawn shop. Hollenbeck, a friend of one of
the theft victims, recognized the man as the alleged thief. He let
Michael D. Ramsey, 34, into his car -- and drove him to a police
officer investigating the car burglary. He was arrested. (Reuters,

Guests at a fund-raising dinner on Cape Cod, Mass.,
were a bit surprised when one of the guests decided to "rescue"
portions of the menu. "I went by the pot where they had the
lobsters,"
said Arlene Ellis. "They were saying, 'Take me back to the beach'."
She
grabbed several and ran to her car, chased by the caterers. She got
away, drove to the shore, and released the lobsters into the surf.
She
later returned and tried to buy shellfish from the plates of other
diners. "She was yelling, 'I'm saving the lobsters, I'm saving the
lobsters'," said one witness. "Her husband Tom was sitting at a table
with about 10 people eating his lobster and pretending nothing was
going on." Ellis said later that "anyone who saw those poor creatures
would have done the same thing." (Boston Herald)
