Since we primarily communicate in English on this forum, I thought it would be nice to know what other languages people speak, in case anybody's in need of translations or whatever. So, why don't you tell us your native language and any others in which you're proficient?
Native: English (the midwestern U.S. version)
Others: German - can read fluently but speak/write like a 3 year old! Know a few words in Russian and Italian, but not really enough to get along.....

Native: Spanish, in the chilean version, which is quite different to the one that Spanish people speak. I can get along with spanish people, though.
Others: This weird mix of Hebrew and English I type here. http://www.beatlelinks.net/ubb/smilies/images/icons/wink.gif

Same here, Harb...this despite five years of French and five years of Spanish in school, plus seven years of Hebrew school...I know enough in French and Spanish to say "I don't understand French or Spanish!" Forget the Hebrew -- "shalom" about covers it...
Sigh...

My native language is English, and I speak/understand German reasonably well, though I'm out of practice. My parents are both German and came over from Europe. They taught my older brother German as his first language, but since he had problems in school, they didn't teach me more than a few basic phrases. I learned most of my German in high school, actually, but I still speak it to my grandmother.

This post made me think of another "made-up" language...how many people remember the old kids' TV show Zoom on PBS (the old one from the 70s, I know it's back now) and their "language," UBBIE-DUBBIE? http://www.beatlelinks.net/ubb/smilies/laugh2.gif
Oh, and more to the point of the topic...I wish I were my brother-in-law -- he speaks something like 12 languages fluently, and he teaches Spanish, French and Italian in the Buffalo, NY public schools...I can only hope my child has more of THAT gift than the lack thereof that his father and I have. Sigh...

Neat lil topic http://www.beatlelinks.net/ubb/smilies/images/icons/smile.gif. Well, my first language was Yugoslav - I didn't know a single word of English when I started pre-school. I speak Yugoslav (or Serbian, or Serbo-Croatian) fluently and I learnt French in school which I used to be quite handy with. I guess now that Yugoslavia has broken up into about 6 different countries, I can claim to speak 6 different languages! Not much difference in them at all since they're more or less one and the same. I understand a lot of other languages from countries around the Balkan, Bulgarian for instance is also practically the same as Yugoslav.
