Where would all of you rate him amongst producers? I'd put his as one of the top 3 with George Martin and Brian Wilson.

I've never really cared for Spector. Some songs that he produced were good, but there were far too many that were overly-produced with his "Wall of Sound".

He was good in the sixties with all his Wall Of Sound artists and he did something in the seventees, but after that???
River Deep Mountain High by Ike and Tina was very good, the Righteous Brothers OK.
But after doing work with George and John, the only artist of any name was Leonard Cohen he produced for.
So he retired probably or was take off many phone-lists.
Sorry, he could be in a top 10, no more, impo.

Top 20 for me. Lots of good producers did great jobs besides him (including Paul, George and John themselves). Altough his work on Plastic Ono Band and All Things Must Pass is quite amazing.

He's done some cool stuff, but on the whole, he's too much for me. I tend to like the producers who make every artist sound like him or herself rather than producers who make all artists sound like THEIR PRODUCTIONS! I don't really think a producer should be that noticeable.

The song "Be My Baby" alone puts him in the top 5.

George Martin is "THE" Producer Man! His work over the years with the Beatles made him the true "5th" Beatle!

after his walling up of Let it Be,- Across the Universe, in particular, he should have stopped at "be my baby" http://www.beatlelinks.net/ubb/smilies/thumbsdown.gif
compare Let it Be to the next album,Abbey Road in it's production, engineering, and recording, and Martin
and Spector should not be mentioned on the same line.

George Martin is the best no doubt, but we would not even know him if he didn't have the best product to produce.
It's a little unfair to compare what Spector had to work with on Let It Be (he was given a tape of somewhat uninspired sessions and yes I agree he did no good to Long and Winding Road) and George Martin Abbey Road being with a new attitude Beatles from the beginnng of the session.

Spector is definitely one of the best. Although I didn't care much for his production techniques on the "Let It Be" album, I'll have to say that "Be My Baby" is one of my all-time favorite songs. For that reason alone, Spector has my respect. http://www.beatlelinks.net/ubb/smilies/images/icons/smile.gif
