View Full Version : Grease is the WORD

If anyone here remembers going to see the movie "Grease" when it first opened back in 1978, will be interested in reading this.
(UPI)Olivia Newton-John -- currently promoting her new greatest hits CD -- says she would take part in a proposed sequel to "Grease," but only if everyone from the original cast, including John Travolta, comes along for the ride. The subject came up last month when ABC-TV announced a deal with Paramount Network Television to produce a musical update of the 1978 feature in which Newton-John starred with Travolta, Stockard Channing, Jeff Conaway and Didi Conn.
(Of course, there was already a sequel, "Grease 2" in 1982, but it didn't amount to much.) The new project, which is expected to air sometime in 2002, will be set in 1979 -- 20 years after cool guy Danny Zuko (Travolta) and foreign exchange student Sandy Olsen (Newton-John) found love at Rydell High. But Newton-John told UPI she would only participate on one condition. "I would be interested if John (Travolta) does it," she said. "It would have to be everyone or it wouldn't be worthwhile." Newton-John said talk of a sequel actually began while the original movie was still fresh in the can. "We talked about doing a sequel 20 years ago," she said. "Looks like now maybe is the time." To one involved with the movie at the time knew that "Grease" would become a classic, but Newton-John said the cast and crew had a good feeling about it. "We just did it," she said. "We had no comprehension. But it had amazing energy and a great feel to it, so there was no reason why it wouldn't do well." It did well enough to stand at No. 46 on the all-time list of U.S. blockbusters. Meanwhile, Newton-John’s new CD -- "Magic: The Very Best Of Olivia Newton-John" -- contains 21 digitally remastered selections, 20 of which hit the Top 40. It also contains the 1990's dance club hit, "The Grease Megamix."

Grease 1 was very popular out here. My both daughters still play the music from time to time.
On schools here, the songs and other parts from the musical are often used in the annual music events closing the year.
With all respect I do not see the original cast doing sort-like things now in a sort of Grease 3, but with a little creative alternative it could become a succes in another formula.
It is a fact that getting music from the sixties, seventees back makes people enthousiastic.

Yeah, very popular here too in terms of this, especially given that Olivia is an Australian and so on. I recall back in Year 7 we did Grease for our end-of-year school play. Works particularly well in an all-Boys school.

Oh wonderful. (Sarcasm) I'm about the only person in my age group who hated that movie. It's SO sexist....the girl has to become what the guy wants in order to get the guy. Yuck. And most of the music is pretty smarmy too. No offense to any of you who liked it - I know most people did and my reaction is unusual! http://www.beatlelinks.net/ubb/smilies/images/icons/smile.gif

Nope, Rell, you're not alone...I didn't care for the movie either. I think Grease is one of the most overrated films (AND overrated stage musicals) of all time. And I agree with your sentiment -- why did the girl have to do everything and change herself to get the guy...bleah!!

my opinion of grease falls in line with yours... i think there are instances where the music can be fun - but it's not nearly worth the fuss it's gotten. and - the ending is lame - how much to say a man wrote the script? http://www.beatlelinks.net/ubb/smilies/wink3.gif all of my friends LOVE this musical and can't stand "old" music... you know, "old" being anything earlier than nirvana http://www.beatlelinks.net/ubb/smilies/images/icons/rolleyes.gif .

Rell and Nip,
I didn't like "Grease" either and found one song, "Greased Lightning" especially sexist and offensive. Smarmy is a gentle description of the music; I, too disliked "Grease." We're in the same age group and believe me, I intensely disliked "Grease." Frankie Valli is for the birds! (I didn't care for the play or the movie). If I never hear "Look at Me, I'm Sandra Dee" or that damn "It's Raining on Prom Night" again, believe me, I won't be sad. http://www.beatlelinks.net/ubb/smilies/thumbsdown.gif I am tired today of that "Grease" soundtrack.
In the 1970s most TV shows were period pieces, e.g. "Little House" and all those 1950s themed shows. Nobody wanted the 1970s until now. What's up with that? I grew up then and I didn't think the 1970s were much to write home about. "Grease" was 1950s backlash in the 1970s and it didn't work for me.
For two summers I worked in a day camp and one of the junior counselors played that damn "Grease" album incessantly. I got so sick and tired of it and became permanently soured on it. I just couldn't stand it any more, so one day I hid the album behind a bookcase because I was just so tired to death of it.

It's a fact that the movie is all about conforming but it's good for a laugh and I like the music. I'm not hard-out feminist or anything so I don't have a MAJOR problem with it.
I watched one of those Behind the Music things on the making of Grease and that was interesting.
Re-makes and sequels ages after the first part....hmmm seems a little weird to me! I remember a few years back hearing that The Monkees (as much as I adore them) did that...did any of you have the pleasure of seeing that? Down here of course it wasn't screened but wasn't there some lame story line like they all feel asleep and were trapped in the 60's - sort of a little like those Brady Bunch movies???? I mean they were so foxy and sexy when they were 20 but...well....ummmmm. I dunno.

Everyone is entitled to their own opinion about the movie. I was born in the '50s, so I can relate to a lot of what were the current fads back then. The early '60s carried on with this to an extent, but played itself out by the mid-'60s.
Everything comes 'round for a second visit every twenty or so years. That's why certain things from the '70s were revived recently. So twentysome years from now, we'll reminisce about this decade.
"Grease" was the biggest nostalgia trip when it was released and that's why it had such a huge following. I enjoyed the movie and still have the soundtrack in my record cabinet. So you can now better understand why I posted this topic in the first place. I think that if they pull it off just right, the sequel could be just as big as the original.

Yes Bearkat, as a 1956 born I feel the same as you write.
I can understand that younger members dislike this but Grease 1 did have a high level of nostalgia and this combined with high-school and the fiftees music made a lot of people enthousiastic and happy. That's the basis of every musical/movie.
Yes, some songs may have looked pretty boring for someone who does not like the atmosphere of this movie.
But, it was a huge hit, so plenty of others liked it, including myself.

I think it's a cute movie. Since I watch it for enjoyment, the "changing to please your man" bit doesn't bother me. I don't feel that I need to do that and am not especially offended by it. Maybe if I had seen it as a young teen...oh wait, I did! http://www.beatlelinks.net/ubb/smilies/images/icons/smile.gif I like some of the songs, but there are several I could do without (guess that's why I always get a drink or go to the bathroom when "hopelessly devoted to you" is played). http://www.beatlelinks.net/ubb/smilies/images/icons/smile.gif
