Speaking of mayonnaise...
Scottish scientist William Cullen, in 1748, discovered that the liquid ethyl ether, allowed to evaporate in a partial vacuum, cooled its surroundings. Americans in the early 19th century substituted the rapid expansion of a gas for the evaporation of a liquid as the coolant. With the widespread availability of electricity at the beginning of the 20th century, the time was ripe for the debut of the household appliance that we know, the refrigerator. It arrived in 1913.

When in a movie theater, if there is a balcony, never sit underneath - that's a low sound frequency trap. According to a Sony Cinema Products Corp. representative, there’s a "sweet" spot, where the sound is better than anyplace else in the movie theater. To find it, you should look for the speakers and position yourself in between them - usually about three-quarters of the way back from the movie screen.

Fourteenth century physicians didn't know what caused the plague, but they knew it was contagious. As a result they wore an early kind of bioprotective suit which included a large beaked head piece. The beak of the head piece, which made them look like large birds, was filled with vinegar, sweet oils and other strong smelling compounds to counteract the stench of the dead and dying plague victims.

Many people know that the Mason-Dixon line was the boundary dividing North and South during the Civil War. But few know that the Mason-Dixon line existed long before that and originally had nothing to do with dividing slave states from "free" states. The line was named for Charles Mason and Jeremiah Dixon, two surveyors who laid out a boundary to settle a border dispute between a Maryland and Pennsylvania family. The line, laid out in 1763 and extended later, established the Maryland-Pennsylvania border. In 1819, when the slavery debate began in earnest, people began referring to this line as the dividing line between free states and slave states.

Liken the black spots on bananas to the liver spots on mature adults... they appear with age, even if they go untouched. The hormone ethylene, a ripening agent found in the skin of the banana, transforms a green banana into the appealing yellow fruit we purchase at the market.
Ethylene, however, continues the ripening process, which gives the banana a "bruised" appearance, and eventually turns the banana black in color. There is no switch to turn off this process, but by placing the banana in a cool place, one can slow the process. The refrigerator is no place for a banana, because this is certain to blacken it prematurely. The cold air, to which the banana is exposed, causes the production of blackening compounds known as polyphenals.

They may not have had the high-tech telescopes we have now, but ancient astronomers were no slouches. They knew of the existence of six of the known planets: Earth (of course), Venus, Mars, Saturn, Mercury, and Jupiter. Uranus was discovered in 1781, Neptune was found in 1846, and Pluto was discovered in 1930. Give 18th century astronomers partial credit for Neptune, though. The planet is believed to have been observed as far back as 1795 by astronomers who thought it was a star.

Although juicy and tender butterball turkeys are the main cuisine of today's Thanksgiving celebrations, these birds were NOT the most popular centerpieces on the first Thanksgiving tables.
In 1621 when the Plymouth colonists and Wampanoag Indians celebrated the first Thanksgiving, they were gobbling up many more foods than just turkey. Since lobster, goose, duck, seal, eel, and cod were plentiful during this time, these foods were most likely the main courses of this first feast. Deer meat and wild fowl are the only two items that historians know for sure were menu of this autumn celebration.
So how did the turkey become the main mascot of modern-day Thanksgiving if we don't know for certain that turkeys were at this first feast?
One story tells of how Queen Elizabeth of 16th century England was chowing down on roast goose during a harvest festival. When news was delivered to her that the Spanish Armada had sunk on it way to attack her beloved England, the queen was so pleased that she order a second goose to celebrate the great news. Thus, the goose became the favorite bird at harvest time in England. When the Pilgrims arrived in America from England, roasted turkey replaced roasted goose as the main cuisine because wild turkeys were more abundant and easier to find than geese.

TRUE FACTS ABOUT LIGHTNING
Lightning is three times hotter than the surface of the sun: 30,000 degrees F compared to 10,000º F.
Each second, there are 50 to 100 cloud-to-ground lightning strikes worldwide.
Most lightning strikes average two to three miles long and carry a current of 10,000 amps at 100 million volts.
The typical width of a lightning bolt is between a quarter and a half-dollar. It appears wider because the light is so bright.

The Dutch word "doop" meant a thick sauce. In underworld slang, it was also applied to the substance of similar consistency that resulted from heating opium. By extension, doop also came to mean narcotics in general and specifically the kind used to drug thoroughbreds to fix a race. Extended even further, doop was used to describe the dope that would bet on such a race.

Virtually any stimulus associated with yawns - including viewing, reading about, and even thinking about, yawning - evokes yawns. (Are you yawning yet?) Yawning spreads in a chain reaction through a group, a compelling example of human herd behavior and a reminder that we are not always in conscious control of our actions. The urge to replicate an observed yawn is clearly an automatic response triggered by our brains.
Studies partially explain the reason for yawning. Although we yawn more when sleepy or bored, it is unclear whether yawning increases alertness. And scientific evidence refutes one of the most popular myths of yawning - that it happens in response to low oxygen or high carbon dioxide levels in the blood or brain. Test subjects do not yawn more when breathing air with enhanced levels of carbon dioxide nor do they yawn less when breathing pure oxygen. One fact explains a lot of apparently inconsistent data. People yawn most during behavioral transitions, such as just after waking and shortly before bedtime. Yawning may help facilitate those changes. Contagious yawning may synchronize a group's behavior so that, for instance, a whole family goes to sleep together.

The tradition of ham served at Easter dates back to the 1600s.
The colonists got the idea from their Native American neighbors.
Every year the Native Americans welcomed spring with a planting
festival that included the practice of smoking meats, especially
venison. The colonists were fascinated with the process and
decided to try it on the hogs they had raised. They salted,
smoked, and stored the meat through the winter until it was
perfectly cured and ready for the table in the spring, just in
time for Easter.

Located in southern Arizona, the city of Tombstone
is probably the most famous and most glamorized
mining town in all of North America. According to
legend, prospectors Ed Schieffelin and his brother
Al were warned not to venture into the Apache
inhabited Mule Mountains because they would only
"find their tombstones." With a touch of the macabre,
the Schieffelins named their first silver strike claim
Tombstone, and it became the name of the town.

On the Italian Riviera in Viareggio, there is a culinary
tradition that a good soup must always contain one
stone from the sea. This stems from the days when
an Italian fisherman's catch was scooped up in nets;
fish and stones frequently ended up together in the
same cooking pot.

Singing is generally a guy thing in the feathered set. One reason for it is to stake out territory. Mr. Bird breaks into song when he's on the make. Birds who sing the most usually have marked out territory rich in food. That's what the female birds are looking for: a guy with the goods.

The Blarney Stone is a stone set in the wall of the Blarney Castle tower in the Irish village of Blarney. Kissing the stone is supposed to bring the kisser the gift of persuasive eloquence (blarney.)

Elias Howe was already working on perfecting the sewing machine when he fell asleep one night and his mind continued working on the problem: he found his answer in a dream. Howe dreamed he was about to be speared by primitive tribesmen. In the dream, the spears all had holes through them at their pointed ends. When he woke up, Howe realized that the spears provided his answer: create the machine so that the needle would have a hole at its tip and not in the middle or at the base.

their meat tender, and are sung to, making them feel serene.

Before microwaves and frozen dinners, people had to really chomp their uncooked food with what are also called "third molars." But today wisdom teeth are vestigial. You don't need them for a guacamole burger. And they get infected and have to come out. Which is where your dentist and credit card come in. They're called wisdom teeth because they're the last teeth you get. You're older and smarter than you were when you got your first teeth. http://www.beatlelinks.net/ubb/smilies/teeth2.gif

What's hotter than a jalapeno? A habanero pepper is about twenty times hotter. The measurement of pepper potency is the Scoville Unit. A bell pepper rings no bells at 100 Scoville Units, max. The jalapeno can hit 3,000 units, and set off an alarm. A typical habanero is a 275,000-unit scorcher.

Would you believe those Rose Bowl Parade floats carry 30,000 to 150,000 roses? To water them you would probably have to hire a cloud seeder. Each float consists of a cocoon-like structure in which a layer of plastic is placed over a steel and chicken wire frame. Volunteers work hundreds of hours during Christmas week to get the flowers onto the plastic. That part is low-tech: they use glue.

How long is a fruitcake edible? Quite a long time (that is, if you consider it edible to begin with). According to "The Joy of Cooking" by Irma Rombauer, Marion Rombauer Becker, and Ethan Becker, fruitcakes "well-wrapped and stored in airtight tins, are reputed to remain enjoyable for as long as 25 years; we have not sampled one." The cakes are saturated with alcoholic liquors to keep down mold (and, of course, to taste better).

Would you believe that the original name chosen for Rudolph started out as "Rollo the Red-Nosed Reindeer"? The story of the red-nosed deer was written by Robert May, a person in the advertising department of Montgomery Ward stores. According to Charles Panati's excellent book, "Extraordinary Origins of Ordinary Things," the original name was "Rollo," but executives didn't like it. They didn't like "Reginald" either, which was Robert's second choice. In the end, Robert's four-year-old daughter picked the name "Rudolph" off a list of "R" names he had compiled. The rest is history.

Which is correct: 12 Midnight A.M. or 12 Midnight P.M.? Neither! Twelve midnight A.M. and twelve midnight P.M., or 00:00 A.M. and 00:00 P.M., mean nothing at all. They are simply the midpoints that divide the day into two equal halves. Each and every day begins exactly at midnight, and each A.M. begins precisely thereafter. Similarly, ea
