Um...is anyone else obsessed with Harry Potter like I am? Please??

The movie comes out in one month and 18 days! Woohoo!

There's gotta be SOMEONE here who loves the books as much as I do. If so, please respond so I can go on and on and on and on and on about this obsession with you!

And if you haven't read the books, GO READ THEM!

YES!! I'm such a nerd, so utterly in love with The Beatles and Harry Potter. And sometimes Scotty.( http://www.beatlelinks.net/ubb/smilies/images/icons/wink.gif )

So anyway, you read them in 3 days?? Whoa. I first discovered them last summer when I saw a guy in his 30s reading Goblet of Fire. I was amazed because I thought they were kids books, so I asked him if he liked it. He of course, was smitten with it. Right then and there I decided to just take a chance and go buy Sorcerer's Stone. I loved it SO much. I went out a couple days later and bought Chamber of Secrets; a couple days later Prisoner of Azkaban; a couple days later Goblet. But for Goblet, I tried to read a couple chapters a day since I knew book 5 wouldn't be out for about two years. That didn't really work, it was HARD to put that book down at night!

So who's your favorite character besides Harry? I LOOOOVE Lupin! Him and Sirius are two of my absolute favorites, along with the usual, Ron and Hermione. I even love Snape!

Are you going to see the movie in 47 days??

We have so much to discuss! If anyone else is as obsessed, jump right in!

Forty! I LOVE Harry Potter!! I have read all four books multiple times, and I can't wait for the movie! (Ooh, we saw an ad for it on TV last night -- YESSSSSSS!!!) I read "Goblet of Fire" in one sitting -- the day it was released...I got a copy in my hot little hands by FedEx that morning and didn't put it down until I was done!

Nope, you're not weird at all...and PLENTY of adults are as enamored as we are, believe me. I even have TWO Hogwarts T-shirts and one sweatshirt...always gets me a few double-takes on the street, but it's worth it!

Oh yes, my husband and I intend to be among the crowd at the film when it comes out November 16th...

I've only read the first two books, but count me in too! Now that the third one's finally in paperback, I can get and read it. (I read WAY too many books to get them all in hardcover.) I'm planning to bring my two nieces to the movie when it opens, but I'd probably go anyway even if I didn't have them as an "excuse." http://www.beatlelinks.net/ubb/smilies/wink1.gif

favorite character? wow - that question is always so hard to answer... well, i absolutely LOVE sirius, ron and hermione - of course, but i am TAKEN with the weasly twins - fred and george! yes, i will definitely be in the queue of people - young and old - lining up to see the movie when it comes out! every time the trailor plays, i get so excited! i just re-read #1 - because i am so anxious for the movie to come out! (i'm also re-reading tolkein's 'ring' trilogy... there's another film i'm incredibly excited to see!) i think that these books are so well written - they aren't just for kids - as so many seem to think. i can't help but imagine that in years to come they just might take place among the ranks of so-called 'children's books' like: lewis's chronicles of narnia, carroll's wonderland books, & tolkein's 'ring' trilogy. yes, they're thought of as 'children's books' - but they have captivated the hearts of all audiences. http://www.beatlelinks.net/ubb/smilies/images/icons/smile.gif

here's a question for the 'potter fans' in this forum - which book is your favorite? (i know it's hard to choose!)

Harb, it's "Prisoner of AZKABAN." But anyway...it's also not any weirder than the value of some Beatles memorabilia...I mean new stuff, stuff that is released now...some of that gets into huge values almost immediately too!

I've actually noticed that a lot of adult HP fans are also Beatles fans, and vice-versa...

Yeah, I saw that article, I bought that magazine beCAUSE of that article! And because Daniel Radcliffe (the kid who plays Harry) was on the cover. That kid is so cute! So are the two kids who play Ron and Hermione. I think Alan Rickman will be awesome as Snape, he's perfect for the part.

And Jami, I will DEFINITELY come to Louisiana to see the movie with you! I am THERE. http://www.beatlelinks.net/ubb/smilies/images/icons/grin.gif You should seriously read the books though, they're SO good.

Allie, which do you like more- Harry Potter or Lord Of the Rings?

I heard that Hugh Grant was going to be in the second movie, Chamber of Secrets, but he pulled out at the last minute. He was going to play Lockhart (dying his hair blond and everything). I'm kinda glad he pulled out cuz he bugs me.

Movies must be way cheap in Louisiana, Sleepy, if you can pay for them with a jar full of dimes! Even if that is a LOT of dimes...

Yeah, I'd like to be there right when they open, but I have a feeling the crowds are gonna be HUGE...and movies here in NYC are a big deal for us, they cost $10 apiece, and if we have to pay for a babysitter at $5 per hour, and if we also want to take advantage and go to dinner like grownups (Jamie is just too young for either of those films right now, he's only 3), a night at the movies ends up costing us as much as $50-$75! No jars of dimes here! http://www.beatlelinks.net/ubb/smilies/images/icons/wink.gif

Are you a surfie chick? http://www.beatlelinks.net/ubb/smilies/images/icons/grin.gif

For surfing, it's hard to go past the Gold Coast, which is not far from me here in Brisbane. Also, Bondi Beach down south is very popular, though it's a little colder down there as opposed to sunny Queensland up here ("beautiful one day, perfect the next" as they say). http://www.beatlelinks.net/ubb/smilies/images/icons/smile.gif

"Surfie chick"? That's a new one to me... http://www.beatlelinks.net/ubb/smilies/images/icons/smile.gif Um, I've tried my hand at it - but wasn't very good. (I played water polo... I'm good in the water, but not balancing on top of it http://www.beatlelinks.net/ubb/smilies/wink3.gif ) Our city is on the beach in Southern California - and I love it. The only reason I asked is because a friend of mine is moving to Australia for a year. He is leaving in a month - and is really excited about it. He's a big surfer, but doesn't really know much about the surfing in Australia - just that it's supposed to be good. http://www.beatlelinks.net/ubb/smilies/images/icons/smile.gif I just figured I would ask you, thought you would have some good input. Anyway - a much longer explanation than I'm sure you expected... http://www.beatlelinks.net/ubb/smilies/blush4.gif

Sorry, I'm in kind of a bad mood today, I think I need to quit one of my jobs before I go insane.

But anyway, I just don't have any clue what'll happen in Order of the Phoenix (that's the name of book 5, right?). But I wonder if Ron and Hermione'll hook up...

I'm looking forward to the movie, myself. The 5th book installment is something that many folks are eager for -- just read recently that it's due in February sometime. The actors (their picture was in the Austin-American Statesman the other day) look the way I envisioned the characters.

OMG! I loved the Potter movie! I had to get my tickets 10 days in advance because they were basically sold out almost everywhere. The tickets were for the 10:20PM showing on opening night; we got to the theater an hour and a half early and STILL had to wait in a huge line. But it was worth it!

The Mirror of Erised scene was so powerful, I really had tears in my eyes. The look of desperation and longing in Harry's eyes when he sees his parents, whoa. That Daniel Radcliffe kid can ACT. He's a cutie, too! So were Rupert Grint and Emma Watson, who played Ron and Hermione's parts perfectly in my opinion.

Snape was great! I love Alan Rickman, ever since Robin Hood. I'm so excited to see him in the sequels. I also can't wait to see who's going to play Siruis Black and Remus Lupin (and it had BETTER not be Hugh Grant or I'll puke!).

I also loved the Quidditch scene, even though unfortunately, there was only one. It was great! Even though I've read the first book twice and knew what happened, I was still completely exhilarated.

I can't wait to see the movie again!

Marissa! It's so good to see you posting! How have you been?

Well, I've been waiting to hear what you thought about the film (since you were my first self-proclaimed Potter/Beatles fan friend here). I caught the 11:05 p.m. show on opening day - and LOVED it!

I thought the characters were cast so well! Rupert Grint - loved the kid! And yes, Alan Rickman (absolutely LOVE him!) as Snape was fabulous! I thought they remained really faithful to the book, and really captured the atmoshpere of Hogwarts, Quidditch, etc. I think my favorite "special effect" was the invisibility cloak.

Well, so glad you loved the movie too. It was definitely a thrill! (Oh - and we caught the full trailor for Star Wars: Episode II - Attack of the Clones as well - for any Star Wars fans out there http://www.beatlelinks.net/ubb/smilies/images/icons/smile.gif ) Icing on an incredibly spectacular cake.

Hi Marissa, good to see you! http://www.beatlelinks.net/ubb/smilies/wave2.gif

Haven't seen the movie yet, hubby and I are going on Friday afternoon! Cannot WAIT!

I love Alan Rickman too, he's fabulous! I think he was just the most perfect casting choice for Professor Snape! (BTW, if you want to see him in a really cool role, he was in this indie movie several years back called "Truly, Madly, Deeply" that is a wonderful sleeper of a film -- he plays the ghost of a cellist who died and who helps his bereaved girlfriend move on with her life, and it's a great little film!)

PLEASE tell me they aren't gonna cast Hugh Grant as Lupin -- I'm with you, Marissa, I'll barf! http://www.beatlelinks.net/ubb/smilies/barf4.gif Great bit of casting for Film #2, though, is Kenneth Branagh as Gilderoy Lockhart...my husband and I thought that was perfect, we'd even predicted it months ago!!

I'm jealous of the people who've seen the film already, but my turn's coming!!!

Saw the film on Friday! It was very well done, I thought. LOVED Alan Rickman, he was perfect -- and the kids were wonderful!

One thing both my husband and I didn't like, though, was the John Williams musical score -- it was a bit heavy-handed and overdone in spots, and also borrowed a bit too much from the scores he's done for the Star Wars films. We both think that perhaps James Horner (the person who did the score for Titanic) would have been a better choice, he's not so heavy with the sweeping crescendos!!

But otherwise, a quite enjoyable film!

Nipper - I had some of the same thoughts (re: the music). Don't get me wrong - I'm definitely a John Williams fan - he's classic! But during the film I kept thinking of Danny Elfman's style (he did music for the Grinch, and Nightmare Before Christmas, etc.)... He may have been a good pick too.

Doesn't change the fact that I loved the movie though! http://www.beatlelinks.net/ubb/smilies/images/icons/smile.gif

Er, I think it's a BIT more than 185 thousand.

And to you others- I LOVE JOHN CLEESE! I'm SO glad Hugh Grant isn't playing Lockhart, ugh! I think Branagh will be great.

I'm still ever-so worried about who will play Lupin, my lovely lovely Lupin...http://www.beatlelinks.net/ubb/smilies/inlove2.gif

Yes, in fact the last tally I read (and this is only through last weekend - ending sunday) they have grossed over $188 million!

Lupin is one of my favorites as well, Forty - who would you like to see in that role?

From what I had heard they were just thinking of using Hugh Grant as Gilderoy, which of course they aren't. Branagh as Gilderoy is fabulous in my opinion I love that guy he is such a great actor. I also love John Cleese as Nearly Headless Nick cause it supports my theory that any movie with John Cleese in it can't be that bad.

I have a question for any of you who have read the books....my little nephew is a very bright 5 1/2 year old. For Christmas he wants books that are "too hard for me to read so Daddy has to read them TO me". http://www.beatlelinks.net/ubb/smilies/images/icons/smile.gif So I'm looking for some longer books with chapters, but that still a 5 year old would appreciate. Do you think these books are too old for a kid that age? If so, do you have any suggestions that would be age-appropriate? Thanks!

If your nephew is very precocious and isn't scared by much, then the first book should be fine for him. They gradually get "darker" and scarier as they go on -- I wouldn't let a kid younger than 8 or 9 read the fourth book, and that's pushing it a bit. But...I would let my son read "Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone" at the age of five...in fact, I can't wait until he's old enough to understand it when we read it to him, I can't wait to introduce him to these fabulous books!

That's my take...

All I have to say is that I just finished book 4 (Goblet of Fire) for the third time and WHOA. It gets better every time I read it! I'm always enthralled by it like I'm right there IN the freakin' book. (yeah yeah, I know I have no life)

For those of you that have read Goblet, what do you think of it?

Forty - I guess I'm right beside you with "no life" http://www.beatlelinks.net/ubb/smilies/images/icons/smile.gif ... I've read all four books many times. I LOVE Goblet of Fire. It's definitely my favorite!

For the LOTR fans out there - I've read Tolkien's books over and over again as well. I am so excited about this one as well. It's coming!

Yeah, Daniel Radcliffe (the kid that plays Harry Potter) was on David Letterman and Dave was joking that Dan was one of the Beatles. Every now and then he'd say something like, "So how're George and Ringo?" or "So I hear you're from Liverpool."
