<Sigh> They're 0-2 so far this season. Definately not Super Bowl material this season. http://www.beatlelinks.net/ubb/smilies/images/icons/frown.gif

They've been beat by the Dolphins and the Jaguars.

In the AFL I support the mighty Brisbane Lions! They're into the Grand Final against Essendon to be played this Saturday. http://www.beatlelinks.net/ubb/smilies/images/icons/grin.gif

Something about those horns. http://www.beatlelinks.net/ubb/smilies/eyebrows.gif

Actually, in the rugby league here I support the Canberra Raiders, so when I started following the NFL it was only natural that I went for the Raiders there too.

This probably won't mean a thing to 99% of you, but...

Lions overwhelm Bombers to win first flag

Saturday, September 29, 2001

MELBOURNE, AAP - Brisbane has won its first AFL premiership, overwhelming Essendon from late in the third quarter to win by 26 points in front of a crowd of 91,448 at the MCG today.

The Lions trailed by nine points entering time-on in the third quarter but benefited from the unseasonably warm weather to race home, winning 15.18 (108) to 12.10 (82).

The loss denied Essendon rare back-to-back premierships, but was a triumph for the national competition and for those Fitzroy fans who maintained the faith after the merger with Brisbane in 1997.

The Lions looked to have blown their chances through poor finishing in the first half, but showed that the form of 15 consecutive wins entering the match was undeniable.

Brisbane played with more verve than a flat-looking Essendon early, but were foiled by big occasion nerves, missing a series of very gettable shots for goal.

Brisbane got the opening two goals before Essendon belatedly worked into the match.

The Bombers looked likely to hold an undeserving quarter-time lead after efficient play from a kick-in whisked the ball forward for Matthew Lloyd to mark and goal, but Brownlow medallist Jason Akermanis snapped to put the Lions' nose in front at the first change.

Essendon regained the lead before Jonathan Brown temporarily corrected the Lions' goalkicking yips with a major from a tight angle to bring the Bombers' lead back to a point early in time-on.

But three goals in six minutes of time-on by the Bombers put them up by 20 points and seemingly on-track for a record-breaking 17th premiership.

The pattern of the third quarter was a mirror-image of the second, with Brisbane getting an early goal before a long arm-wrestle for control.

The Lions' move came in time-on of the third quarter.

Nigel Lappin put through a long snap shot, Brown converted again, Lappin scored another from a set shot before Martin Pike snapped truly.

In an 11-minute spell, the course of the match had been irreversibly changed.

The Lions led by 16 points at the last break, but Lloyd threatened to spark an Essendon rally with a goal eight minutes into the final term to reduce the margin to 10 points.

Another turning point came when a delayed advantage decision was unfairly paid in the Lions' favour, allowing Tim Notting to stroll in to goal 10 minutes into the term.

After two shots hit the post to extend the agony of uncertainty, Lions skipper Michael Voss threaded a goal from the boundary line on the run, and Luke Power added another soon after to seal the win approaching full-time.
