It's come a time for all to take sides. This can happen in any country. There is no neutrality toward an act so dastardly as has been bestowed upon us in NYC.

The Netherlands have already commented that this attack was on US territory but in fact was towards 'us all' and that they will follow NATO's decision and in case military actions follow, will be there.

Yes Harb - 'this is serious'. Probably the most serious thing you and I have ever lived through.
My heart has gone out on a huge scale to those suffering from this villianous affair.
If American people, and most people generally, want 'justice', who can disagree with that. They have the right to inflict the death penalty on all associated with this heinous crime.
However, 'revenge' in the form of war is another issue altogether. The indiscriminate and wholesale killing and destruction of another country, no mater if some evil people are within it borders, cannot be justified.
I am not a disciple of George Harrison's philosophy, I think for myself, but in this case I do agree wholeheartedly with George. War is wrong. 'Justice' as opposed to 'revenge'.

1. France is one of the biggest harbourers of terrorists there is. I can't really see any useful help from them.

2. Greece is in no position to help any NATO action, especially as their military is strainded defending their own borders as ot is. And remember,if this fails and there's a counterstrike,Greece gets it first.

3. Can we really trust some of our allies? See with Greece, one of the main border and territory fights is with fellow NATO member Turkey. I can not see any cause with which these 2 can work together--after all they and their nationals in Cyprus have been in an 40 odd year conflict(mostly in Cyprus, but does spill into the mainland).

4. Britain-they can and will supply troops, etc. BUT-consider that in a war witht heir own domestic terrorist in 32 years, they really haven't made a dent in the IRA. In fact in the 90+ year history of the IRA, Britiain never has been able to accomplish much.

5. Europe tends to be all talk,no action on most matters anyway. These declarations make nice photo ops,and that's about it.

6. We have no leadership, and haven't since the time of FDR-Korea,the whole object wasn't to win,but to regain the 38th Parallel, Viet nam was excessively poorly organized and executes, Lebanon we got 300 Marines killed and ran,Grenada-all the 'enemy' there was 50 unarmed Cubans, Desert Storn Saddam feinted and instead of doing the full job,Bush sr. said our only mandate was freeing Kuwait, Somalia was a disater as well, the last strike on bin Laden-we blew up a diaper factory in Sudan. All this will be,we'll blow up a couple of factories and declare victory. Also,Reagan's war on terrorism included the CIA selling the terrorists high tech weapons.

7. When the first pictures of American boys in bodybags gets into the media(I doubt it will be as heavily censored as Desert Storn was)-you'll see the opposition build up quicly to it. Plus, Americans don't want a 15-20 year war, they and their leaders want the quick feel-good winnabe war.

Sorry if the above is depressing and an unpopular view, but it's how I see things...

I believe we are past hoping that no Jihad exists - for the instigators, at least, this is the Jihad to end all Jihads. For quite a few of us here in the States, we are now viewing this situation as an affront to our God-given rights to live peacefully. In short, we already view this as a Holy War, though many of us will only publically claim a political stance of defending others. However, defending others is also a God-ordained tenet - so whatever their mouths may say, in their hearts, they are defending what they perceive to be basic (re:God-given) rights.

Sleepy, I am interested to hear your thoughts... do you think the conflict may well spread to beyond that of the Middle East once it begins?

I know some of the countries in this area have nuclear capabilities so I hope it doesn't come down to that... if anyone is 'mad' enough to use nuclear weapons (excluding what happened in Hiroshima & Nagasaki) it is certainly the people from this region, as we've witnessed from Tuesday's events.

I most definitely feel that if once we decide to engage in the war that has been declared on us, that it will be joined by many nations, which will necessarily result in retaliatory actions against them by the ones we target first. As such a war commences, and more lives are lost, more and more people will begin to be drawn in on a more personal note, and feelings will run quite high on whether or not they feel their own respective countries should continue or join the efforts, which will result in country in-fighting.

In other words, I believe that the lines are being drawn, and those who do not participate on one side or the other will be viewed as defenders of the opposing sides, and may very well be targeted merely for their lack of stance. Since terrorism is such an all-pervading evil, quite a huge chunk of humanity will be prevailed upon to either combat it with coalitive military actions, or to defend their stance as "non-committal".

And we mustn't forget that there will be those who view this as strictly an "American vs. ?terrorist group?" thing, and will howl most vehemently at those who join the battle anyway.

In short, I honestly believe that any military actions taken after this point, especially on the part of the US, will result in the war to end all wars, a Global War with civil wars dotting the globe as well.

I hope for America's sake (and that of others') that we don't have a repeat of Vietnam where other nations began to completely withdraw from the conflict after sustaining heavy losses and pretty much left the US on its own in the end. And we all know how that ended up. Clearly lives will be lost in this battle, but there will certainly be a public backlash if things don't go to plan early on and planes start heading home with bodybags in them. The US military will not want a lengthy battle, though it appears this may have to be the case - it will be difficult for many Americans back home on where to draw the line between wanting to win the war and wanting their sons and daughters to arrive home safely. Surely, though, common sense would say to cut your losses and keep what you can.

Precisely. I'm scared to death that if none of the atrocities committed by mankind in the millenia before have persuaded God to bring us to the "end-times", that such a war could very well be the one that ushers in the end of the world.

Pictures from the Middle East are showing tanks, scud missiles and rocket launchers, etc., rolling in to Afghanistan in preparation for what's in store ahead. The Taliban will declare a Holy War if touched so it certainly appears that things will get very messy.
