James Trager's "Food Chronology" lists the fortune cookie as being invented in 1916 by Los Angeles noodle manufacturer David Jung. He got the idea for the message-bearing cookie from an ancient Chinese warfare technique. To exchange covert messages, Chinese rebels would print them on small papers and hide them inside buns. Instead of war secrets Jung's cookies held slips of paper with Confucian proverbs printed on them.

Ordinarily a circuit in your TV's amplifier either boosts or diminishes broadcast signals, depending on the strength of the signal. But if there's no signal - as when a station goes off the air -- this amplifier circuit, called an automatic gain control, boosts to the maximum whatever it picks up. In the absence of a broadcast signal, it's picking up and amplifying random static emissions that could come from your pc, vacuum cleaner or other circuits in the TV itself. Without any signal at all you would see a white screen. The electronic static shows up as moving dark dots which, blended with the white, appear to be snow.

Most trees are understandably AGAINST forest fires. But there are some trees that couldn't exist without them. A few species of pine tree, including the lodgepole pine of Western mountain slopes, the pitch pine of New Jersey, and the knobcone pine of Oregon and California, benefit from forest fires. The trees' pinecones open only after exposure to intense heat. When a forest fire sweeps through, the trees release their seeds, creating many new pine trees at once. The knobcone pine, in fact, has cones that are rigidly attached to the trunk or large branches. The cones wait there for decades for a fire to finally race through so they can explode upon the earth and plant a new knobcone
forest.

Contrary to what many people believe, Roman emperors did not necessarily signal that a losing gladiator in the arena was to die by giving the thumbs down signal. "Pollice verso," the Latin phrase from which the thumbs down idea came, actually just means "thumb turned." Some scholars even think that thumbs down meant that the victor should put down his sword and spare the vanquished.

How fast will a penny travel if it's dropped off the Empire State building? (For those in the EU, feel free to substitute any of your
favorite tall buildings.) This question really revolves around which way the penny falls. Is it falling edge first or is it falling flat? If the penny falls edge first, it could build up its velocity to about 150 miles an hour. If it falls flat, well it would only get up to about 30 miles an hour.
The chances of a penny doing either are nearly impossible. Any disturbance in the wind will set it tumbling, which is how it will probably fall. In this case, the penny will fall at only about 30 miles an hour.

Oliver Cromwell, Lord Protector of England and scourge of the monarchists, died peacefully on 3rd Spetember 1658. 18 months later the monarchy had been restored and the royalists wanted revenge for the regicide of King Charles I. Cromwell's corpse was exhumed from his tomb in Westminster Abbey and dragged through the streets of London to Tyburn. He was then given a symbollic hanging. 6 hours later his corpse was taken down from the gallows and beheaded by an executioner. His head was then paraded through the streets before being stuck on an iron spike and displayed atop Westminster Hall.

Poor John Duns Scotus! He hoped to go down in history as a wise scholar, but instead he gave us the word "dunce." John Duns Scotus was a thirteenth-century scholastic theologian. His teachings couldn't have been TOO lame, because he still had followers, called "Dunses" or "Dunsmen," as late as the sixteenth century. Unfortunately, the Dunses were laughed at by the sixteenth-century humanist scholars and religious reformers who felt the followers of Scotus were behind the times and resistant to the new learning. By the time the sixteenth century had drawn to a close, the word "dunce" had come to mean one opposed to learning or "a stupid person." http://www.beatlelinks.net/ubb/smilies/dunce.gif

The cruise liner Queen Mary, now at harbour in Los Angeles, was originally meant to be known by a different name. A director of Cunard - the ship's owners - met King George V intending to name the ship Queen Victoria. He asked if the vessel could be named after 'the greatest Queen this country has ever known'. The King replied 'That is the greatest compliment ever paid to my wife. I'll ask her'. Hence, the ship became the Queen Mary.

Baths equaled a big tub filled with hot water. The man of the house had the privilege of the nice clean water, then all the other sons and men, then the women and finally the children. Last of all the babies. By then the water was so dirty you could actually loose someone in it. Hence the saying, "don't throw the baby out with the bath water."

Lead cups were used to drink ale or whiskey. The combination would sometimes knock them out for a couple of days. Someone walking along the road would take them for dead and prepare them for burial. They were laid out on the kitchen table for a couple of days and the family would gather around and eat and drink and wait and see if they would wake up. Hence the custom of holding a "wake."

England is old, small and they started running out of places to bury people. So they would dig up coffins and would take their bones to a house and reuse the grave. In reopening these coffins, one out of 25 coffins were found to have scratch marks on the inside and they realized they had been burying people alive. So they thought they would tie a string on their wrist and lead it through the coffin and up through the ground and tie it to a bell. Someone would have to sit out in the graveyard all night to listen for the bell. Hence on the "graveyard shift" they would know that someone was "saved by the bell" or he was a "dead ringer."

"Kamikaze" refers to a suicide mission. The word can denote either a Japanese pilot trained in World War II to make a suicidal crash attack upon a ship or other target OR an airplane loaded with explosives and used for suicide missions. The word is also slang for a reckless person who appears to be courting death. "Kamikaze" is derived from "kami" ("divine") and "kaze" ("wind"). The word comes from the legendary name of a typhoon that in 1281 saved Japan from destruction by the Mongol navy. The violent storm turned back and devastated the Mongol invaders.

Kangaroo rats, native to the deserts of the US, are perfectly suited to their arid environment. They don't need to drink water to survive because they have the ability to convert the dry seeds they digest INTO water. They neither sweat nor pant like other animals to keep cool. They also have unique kidneys that permit them to extract most of the water from their urine and return it to their blood stream. Kangaroo rats often will not drink water even when it's offered to them. They're called kangaroo rats, by the way, because they're excellent at leaping.

There are 4,360,000 cubic yards of concrete in the Hoover Dam. This much concrete would build a monument 100 feet square and 2-1/2 miles high; would rise higher than the Empire State Building (which is 1,250 feet) if placed on an ordinary city block; or would pave a standard highway, 16 feet wide, from San Francisco to New York City.

When the English owned much of the farmland of Scotland, they charged the farmers a rent, called "mail." Mail is derived from a Scottish word that means rent or taxes.
The payments were normally made in silver. This was referred to as "white mail." When a farmer couldn't afford to pay his mail in silver, he would resort to paying it in produce. The English didn't like this, and the term for the practice became "black mail."
Threatening eviction, the English often demanded more blackmail than was needed to cover the rent (obviously a deterrent). This gave the term "blackmail" its negative connotation.

Exposure to space for half a minute probably wouldn't kill or permanently injure you. That is - if you don't hold your breath. Holding your breath is likely to damage your lungs, something scuba divers have to watch out for when ascending. Scientists speculate (and animal experiments confirm) that exposure to a vacuum (like that found in space) causes no immediate injury. You won't explode, freeze, fall unconscious, or feel your blood boil! At some point, though, you WOULD lose consciousness from lack of oxygen. After perhaps one or two minutes, you WILL be dying. No one really knows for sure.

How to determine if a mirror is 2-way or not. (Not a
joke!) Not to scare you, but to make you aware.
This was passed on by a policewoman who travels all
over the US and gives seminars and techniques for businesswomen.
HOW TO DETECT A 2-WAY MIRROR
When we visit toilets, bathrooms, hotel rooms, changing
rooms, etc., how many of you know for sure that the seemingly
ordinary mirror hanging on the wall is a real mirror, or actually a
2-way mirror?
(i.e. they can see you, but you can't see them.)
There have been many cases of people installing 2-way
mirrors in female changing rooms. It is very difficult to positively
identify the surface by just looking at it.
So, how do we determine with any amount of certainty what type of
mirror we are looking at?
Just conduct this simple test.
Place the tip of your fingernail against the reflective
surface and if there is a GAP between your fingernail and the image
of the nail, then it is a GENUINE mirror.
However, if your fingernail DIRECTLY TOUCHES the image
of your nail, then BEWARE... FOR IT IS A 2-WAY MIRROR!
So remember, every time you see a mirror, do the "fingernail test."
It doesn't cost you anything. It is simple to do, and it might save
you from getting visually raped!
Remember: "No Space, leave the place!"
Ladies: Share this with your girlfriends
Men: Share this with your wives, daughters, girlfriends
or any woman you care about.
Regards, Citizens' Police Academy, NYPD

A few good facts for you...
1. In Shakespeare's time, mattresses were secured on bed frames by
ropes. When you pulled on the ropes the mattress tightened, making
the bed firmer to sleep on. That's where the phrase, "goodnight,
sleep tight" came from.
2.The sentence "The quick brown fox jumps over the lazy dog." uses
every letter in the alphabet. (It was developed by Western Union to
test telex/twx communications.)
3. The Main Library at Indiana University sinks over an inch every
year because when it was built, engineers failed to take into
account the weight of all the books that would occupy the building.
4. The phrase "rule of thumb" is derived from old English law which
stated that you couldn't beat your wife with anything wider than
your thumb.
5. Ten percent of the Russian government's income comes from the
sale of vodka.
6. Only one person in two billion will live to be 116 or older.
7. In Cleveland, Ohio, it's illegal to catch mice without a hunting
license.
8. Thirty-five percent of the people who use personal ads for
dating are already married.
9. The world's termites outweigh the world's humans 10 to 1.
10. The 3 most valuable brand names on earth: Marlboro, Coca-Cola,
and Budweiser, in that order.
11. In 10 minutes, a hurricane releases more energy than all the
world's
nuclear weapons combined.
12. It was the accepted practice in Babylon 4,000 years ago that for
a month after the wedding, the bride's father would supply his
son-in-law with all the mead he could drink. Mead is a honey beer,
and because their calendar was lunar based, this period was called
honey month" or what we know today as the "honeymoon."
13. In English pubs, ale is ordered by pints and quarts. So,in old
England, when customers got unruly, the bartender would yell at them
to mind their own pints and quarts and settle down. It's where we
get the phrase "mind your P's and Q's."
14. Many years ago in England, pub frequenters had a whistle baked
into the rim or handle of their ceramic cups. When they needed a
refill, they used the whistle to get some service. "Wet your
whistle," is the phrase inspired by this practice.

The Cape hunting dog, also known as the African wild dog, can run speeds of about 37 miles per hour for three miles or more (the cheetah may run faster, but only for short distances). It's maximum short-distance speed is 45 miles per hour, faster than the greyhound. The dog's marathon capabilities enable it to tire out and eventually catch faster prey.

Marie Laveau was the famous Voodoo Queen of New Orleans. A free woman of color, she acclaimed herself the Pope of Voodoo in the 1830s. This former hairdresser and nurse became the most revered and feared woman in New Orleans - quite a feat for a black woman in the days of slavery. One of her most famous successes is that of freeing an innocent man of murder. The man's father, a Creole gentleman, promised Marie ownership of his own house if she could get his son released. The day of the trial she performed her ritual behind St. Louis Cathedral and managed to sneak in a few Guinea peppers to place under the seat of the judge. It apparently worked. (ANOTHER theory is that she used her "power" to persuade a witness - a voodoo believer terrified of Marie Laveau - to alter his testimony). Marie was said to be able to "bi-locate" or appear in several locations at once. This is more likely the effect of having a daughter who looked just like her and also practiced voodoo. The daughter took over her mother's practice when she died - making it difficult to know when, precisely, her mother's death occurred.

Ever wonder which part of the body signals that it needs more water? Thirst has to do with the amount of salt in the bloodstream. Our blood prefers to keep a fixed percentage of salt in it and is not interested in changing this mix. The body has a mechanism that signals the kidneys to absorb any excess salt. In absorbing the excess salt, much water is taken away from the body tissues. This causes the body to crave more water to replace the water that was absorbed.
The sense of thirst is caused by stimulation of cells in the pharynx (the tube that connects the mouth and nasal passage with the esophagus) caused by the loss of water from the cells with which nerve endings are in contact. The decrease in the concentration of water in the blood causes a drying of the lining of the pharynx because of a decreased salivary secretion. This causes the urge to drink.

The Spanish word for cat door is gatera. In old Spanish
homes, there was a gatera cut into the doors to give the
kitties an easy way in and out of the house. It also provided
a way for romance among the young to take place, when
balconies were too high. The couple would lay on the floor,
he on the outside, she on the inside and carry on conversa-

According to an old Polish legend, many springtimes ago
a mother cat was crying at the bank of the river in which
her kittens were drowning. The willows at the river's edge
longed to help her, so they swept their long graceful
branches into the waters to rescue the tiny kittens who
had fallen into the river while chasing butterflies. The
kittens gripped on tightly to their branches and were
safely brought to shore. Each springtime since, goes
the legend, the willow branches sprout tiny fur-like buds
at their tips where the tiny kittens once clung.

The White House, in Washington DC, was originally gray, the
color of the sandstone it was built out of. After the War of 1812,
during which it had been burned by Canadian troops, the outside
walls were painted white to hide the smoke stains.

The Dutch purchase of Manhattan Island from the Canarsie Indians for about $24 is probably the most notable real estate deal in American history. Most people regard it as a steal for the Dutch.
But wait. That tribe didn't own the island! They were based in Brooklyn and also occupied a small part of the southern tip of Manhattan. The Weckquasegeeks held most of Manhattan. So it was the Dutch who were snookered.

Basenjis, an exotic African hound are very unusual. They have long, graceful legs like a gazelle and are very swift and agile. Basenji bitches only come into heat once a year. They usually have 4 puppies and are classified as hounds. Basenjis neither shed nor smell and they yodel instead of bark. They have smooth coats, wrinkled foreheads, a double curl in their tails (like a Pug's tail) and usually prefer adult owners. They are ideal for apartment dwelling and for senior citizens. Basenjis are intelligent and usually bond with one person.

The fireworm, or guinea-worm Dracunculis medinensis, is the largest of the tissue parasites to infect humans. People are infected by drinking water containing water-fleas infected with mature fireworm larvae. Stomach acids dissolve the water-fleas and release the larvae, which burrow through the intestinal walls, where they mature and mate. The male larvae die after mating, but the fertilized females move into other body parts where they grow up to three feet long. The worms emerge from the body a year later, usually from blisters on the feet or legs. Infected people usually don't have any symptoms until the worms are ready to come out. When the fireworm is ready, the host develops a fever and painful blisters, from which worms begin to emerge when the wound is placed in water. Upon entering the water, the worms release more larvae, continuing the cycle.

It's popularly believed that Abner Doubleday, a sportsman and writer, invented baseball in Cooperstown, New York, in 1839. That, at least, was the conclusion of the Special Baseball Commission of 1906-07, a group formed by A.G. Spaulding with the goal of proving that baseball was a uniquely American game. In fact, however, baseball is derived from a British game called rounders that had been popular in colonial America.

Why do we associate Dalmatians with firemen?
The key facts are that there is a natural affinity between Dalmatians and horses, and Dalmatians make good watchdogs. People who owned valuable horses often kept Dalmatians around to guard them against horse thieves. Fire engines used to be drawn by fast and powerful horses, a tempting target for thieves. So, Dalmatians were kept in the firehouse as deterrence to theft. The horses have long since gone, but the Dalmatians, by tradition, have stayed.

How did 'Mister' get to be a title of address?
While Mr. is common these days, it began as a term of respect, coming to us from two sources. "Master" as a title evolved into mister to match the female title, "Mistress". Mister also developed as a title to set apart skilled workers, or artisans, from the peasantry and common laborers. Here it descends from the Latin, "ministerium", which meant craft or trade. Over the centuries, as it passed through the lips of enough mumblers and fast talkers, ministerium became mister.
By the way, the French Revolution sought to eliminate all special terms of address, replacing them with "Citizen".

"Catch 22" has come to mean a problematic situation for which the only solution is denied by a circumstance inherent in the problem. The original "Catch-22," in Joseph Heller's 1961 novel of the same name, is the catch that prevents a US Air Force pilot in World War II from asking to be grounded on the basis of insanity. The pilot knows that military regulations permit insane pilots to be grounded and not forced to fly further dangerous bombing missions. However, the regulation prevents airmen from escaping bombing missions by pleading insanity by stating that any airman rational enough to WANT to be grounded cannot possibly be insane and therefore is fit to fly. From the novel: a man "would be crazy to fly more missions and sane if he didn't, but if he was sane, he had to fly them. If he flew them he was crazy and didn't have to: but if he didn't he was sane and had to."

The Dodge Dart and the Plymouth Valiant, two cool sister cars were identical from 1973 - 1976.
However, the Canadian Dodge Darts and Plymouth Valiants were packaged with the Dart body. If you see a 1966 Plymouth Valian with the distinctive Dodge Dart body with that cool wide grille and bissected oval tail lights, you are looking at a Canadian Chrysler car.
The 1964 and 1965 Plymouth Belvederes had Dartlike bodies, but they were smaller than the Dart and had dropped tail lights. Prior to the early 1970s, no Dodge Dart had dropped tail lights. The Dodge Dart had a slant 6 engine, 6 cylinders of Chrysler perfection. Its uppercrust "relative," the Dodge Coronet had 8 cylinders. In my favorite movie, "Mr. Holland's Opus," the car he drives like a bat out of "a cave" is a beautiful white, 1965 Dodge Coronet. That is one really cool Chrysler.

Ancient legend has it that the swan, silent throughout its life, sings a beautiful song right before it dies because it is so joyful (says the Greek philosopher Plato) at going to join Apollo, the god of music. Hence, the phrase "swan song" to refer to a farewell appearance or final act or pronouncement. In fact, swans are not mute throughout their lives and their actual call - a shrill, honking sound - is far from beautiful.

The best man at most weddings does not carry a sword. But best men used to do exactly that - and they might have used them too. For the ancient Goths, a good wedding often meant a good kidnapping. Young Gothic men, frequently short on potential mates in their own community, sometimes simply stole their bride from a neighboring village. Bride-theft invited rescue attempts, however, so the "best man" was charged with standing guard, fully armed, throughout the ceremony - in case the bride’s family tried to take her back.

The US Congress adopted "The Star-Spangled Banner" as the national anthem in 1931 (following more than two decades of bills and joint resolutions). Francis Scott Key wrote the lyrics in 1814, during the War of 1812. The melody is taken from an eighteenth-century drinking song called "To Anacreon in Heaven." Imagine hitting those high notes once you've put away a few beers!

You can store cottage cheese in the coldest part of the refrigerator
for up to 10 days past the stamped date. Cottage Cheese is made from
whole, part-skimmed or skimmed pasteurized cow's milk. "Sweet curd"
cottage cheese has a rather mild, sometimes bland, flavor because the
curds are washed to remove most of the cheese's natural acidity.
Cottage cheese is sold plain and flavored. Because it's more perishable
than other cheeses, cartons of cottage cheese are stamped on the bottom
with the date they should be pulled from the shelves.

The original American Flag had as its canton the Union Flag of Greta Britain(at the time no red x for St. Patrick).
It wasn't until 1777 thta stars replaced the Union Flag.
It wasn't until 1912 that there was a law dictating how the stars are to be arranged on the flag.

Yep. If you've noticed that old people seem to have big ears, you'll be glad to know you're not imagining it. The rest of the body slows down its growth rate as you age, but the ears keep going and going and going....

If you were on the planet Mercury, it would seem like a year or more from one day to the next. That's because Mercury, being close to the sun, revolves around it in only 88 days, completing one year. But it takes twice as long as that for Mercury to make one full rotation on its axis thus completing a full day.

SAM SAID NO
Sam was a good writer but a bad business man. He earned more than anyone
else ever had from writing and speaking, but he just couldn't hang onto
it. Somebody approached the bushy-haired author about a steam pulley
guaranteed to revolutionize the construction industry. It cost Sam $32,000
to find out it as no good.
Marine telegraphy was the coming thing. He was $25,000 sure of it. Failure!
Another inventor had a blue print for a new type-setting
machine. One-hundred-ninety-two-thousand dollars later, Sam found out it
didn't.
So when the timid little man with the big idea wanted him to invest in just
one more thing, Sam asked, "How much?"
"All you want for five-hundred dollars."
"Five-hundred dollars a share?"
"No, Mr. Clemens... for $500.00 you can have all the stock you want."
Sam thought it over and finally said, "No."
And that was the only time in his life that Mark Twain ever turned down any
inventor. That's one of the great things about America... the opportunity
to make up your own mind, even if you're wrong.
And Sam Clemens really was wrong that time when the shy young man with the
crazy idea about sending voices down wires offered him all the stock he
wanted in exchange for just a small investment.
The inventor was Alexander Graham Bell... and he had an idea for a thing
called the telephone... and Mark Twain could have owned all of AT&T for
$500.00 cash!

Summer blockbusters just aren’t what they used to be. Titanic, often cited as the biggest blockbuster of all time, grossed almost $661 million in 1997. But in 1939, Gone With the Wind grossed more than $2.4 billion (after you adjust 1939 dollars for inflation)! Disney’s Snow White, released in 1937, gets second spot on the all-time list with more than $2.3 billion in inflation-adjusted box-office receipts. Titanic shows up on the charts at number 9.

MindGames and I can speak from experience on this one. The average person knows at least five people who have had pilonidal cysts.
Pilonidal cysts are believed to be caused by a congenital opening in the coccyx, or base of the spine. At one time it was believed that ingrown hair (pilos = hair) turned back into the opening caused the cyst. In recent times it has been determined that the opening, usually at the base of the spine fills with fluid that becomes infected. Early adulthood is generally the time these cysts flourish.
They look like boils without a pus capped head. They can be quite large and many people who have suffered from pilonidal cysts have had several cysts beside one another. They often need to be lanced by a doctor and in some cases, the skin containing the small openings needs to be excised. I had flare ups from pilonidal cysts for years until I had good health insurance that paid for the removal of those painful headless boils.
Removal of the cysts (and they will always need medical intervention -- the pain from a full blown cyst or cysts is excruciating) is inevitable. Once the cysts are removed, the best Rx is lots of Beatle songs, going gentle on the affected area and setting the area in warm water is highly recommended.

Jack Rabbits are really hares, not rabbits.
Hares are larger than rabbits, have the distinctive split lip and hop higher. Rabbits are much smaller and have much shorter ears.
The Jack Rabbit got its name from its long ears, like a Jackass. It was originally called the Jackass Rabbit and that was eventually sanitized and shortened to Jack Rabbit, although it is really a hare.

Today's topic: The Pineapple: Why it is Neither.
Dogs do not have a single uterus. They have a Y-shaped womb called "uterine horns" and their unborn puppies develop in separte enclosed sacs within the uterine horns.
Pigs can learn to unlatch a gate. There is a pig rescue group in my town and pet pot bellied pigs are adopted through an underground network in the Travis County area. Pig people come to local gatherings such as Earth Day armed with photo albums of the porkers with captions like, "spayed and loves to dig," "gentle with children," "uses kitty litter box." A number of people in my town own pot bellies and say it's sorta like owning a dog.
Sows have 14-16 teats and can have as many as 27 in a litter.

The next time your mother accuses you of "eating like a bird" (not eating enough), let her know how much birds eat! Because they require so much energy for flying, birds typically eat one-fourth to one-half of their own body weight each day. Baby birds can eat as much as 100 percent of their own weight every day.

Dogs mature very fast in their early years. However, most of their growth occurs during the first two years. After that, development slows down. A one-year-old dog is like a teenage human and a two-year-old dog is like an adult in his mid-twenties. Only when the dog is older--more than ten--does a single dog year equal about seven human years.

Ants keep slaves. Certain species, the so-called
sanguinary ants for example, raid the nests of
other ant tribes, kill the queen, and kidnap many
of the workers. The workers are brought back to
the captors' hive, where they are coerced into
performing menial tasks.

"Chopines" were platform shoes that became popular
in Europe during the 16th century. Some chopines were
over 20 inches tall. In the 1400's, a popular form of shoes
called "crakows" sported extremely long toes. The length
of the toes, which could be over 20 inches, was an indication
of the social status of the person wearing them.

Frazier's Jack Russell Terrier, Eddie is played by a Jackster named Moose. Moose's son played Skip in "My Dog Skip." The winsome little Jack who won the hearts of his viewers rose to fame in this film.
Parson Jack Russell bred the Jack as we know them today. Many kennel clubs did not recognize Jacks as a breed until very recent times.

Kangaroos may be Australian, but the expression "kangaroo court" is American and dates from the mid-19th century. The phrase refers to a mock trial conducted without proper legal procedure or any court of law in which the rules are rigged so as to prevent a fair trial. A kangaroo court is thus one that "jumps" to conclusions and decisions.

In late October 1991, a storm stronger than any in recorded history hit the coast off of Gloucester, Massachusetts, causing waves of 100 feet (that's about the size of a ten-story building!) in the Atlantic ocean and leading to the disappearance of a Gloucester fishing boat, the Andrea Gail. The storm was actually the convergence of THREE storms. The dying Hurricane Grace ran smack into energy coming across the Great Lakes AND an old frontal system around the New England area. The energy from the three storms combined over time in the Atlantic and caused the old hurricane to regenerate itself. Meteorologists now call this storm "the perfect storm" or "the no-name storm" because it wasn't given the name of a new hurricane. The 1991 storm was also unique because it "retrograded" or doubled back at one point toward Cape Cod and the New England Coast. Retrogressions are extremely unusual, especially for huge storms with great momentum.
No one knows what actually happened aboard the Andrea Gail, a 72-foot steel-hulled swordfish boat. (What you see in the movie is a fictional re-creation of events we can only guess about.) On the evening of October 28, the ship's last radio contact conveyed that the crew was doing its best to get through a storm so strong that winds were tearing away equipment attached to the deck with steel bolts. The boat gave her position and signed off. Days later, search teams found a few of the Andrea Gail's fuel drums, but no trace of the six crewmen.

Not all kennel clubs and dog groups recognize the Jack Russell Terrier as a breed. There are Jack Russell Terrier clubs in the UK, Australia, Canada ant the US. Jacks have been increasing in popularity since 1990 when Barkley, a spirited male Jack appeared in several commercials and on the "Full House" show. Wishbone really helped boost the popularity of Jacks as did Frazier's dog. Jacks have appeared in any number of commercials in recent years.
The Aztecs flavored their chocolate with hot peppers. The Spaniards didn't like it that way and prepared their chocolate drinks and treats with sugar, a secret they kept for over a century.
Robert Kennedy had mild dyslexia, but learned to read within normal limits. By age 35 he became an avid consumer of classical literature and by 40 could quote long passages from Aeschylus, Camus and Sophocles. His son Joseph also has mild dyslexia and also learned to read within normal limits.

We generally use the word "decimate" now to mean to obliterate or wipe out something altogether or to at least destroy MOST of something. The word originally meant to destroy ONE-TENTH of something. "Decimate" (from the Latin "decimus" or "tenth") originally referred to the random killing of every tenth person - a Roman military practice used to punish disobedient or mutinous legions.

Green was considered a bad luck color by race car drivers at one time. Chevrolet is considered the most modest car in the GM lineup (no offense to Chevrolet drivers -- I happen to LOVE classic Chevrolets, especially the 1964 CHEVROLET IMPALA and the 1961 CHEVROLET BEL AIR! BE STILL, MY HEART)! and to suggest that one could not perform a task even in a green Chevrolet was to suggest great ineptitude in an area.
I read this expression not too long ago: "He can't even sing in a green Chevrolet!" I thought that was funny.

From 1956-1959 the Ford Ranchero truck was built on a Fairlane bed.
From 1960-1965 it was built on the Ford Falcon bed. It looked like a Falcon with a truck back and from 1960-1965 THAT TRUCK LOOKED ITS COOLEST AND BEST!
The 1966 models on up reverted to the Fairlane appearance.
The first Ford Mustangs that galloped onto the road did so the year the Beatles came to America -- 1964!
The Falcon and the Thunderbird flew their coolest from 1960-1965. Starting in 1966, the Falcon was built on a Mustang bed and was no longer the cool, distinct, spiffy little bird it was from 1960-1965!
Ford was a better idea when the Falcon flew with the Thunderbird and cruised with its sister, the really cool Mercury Comet. Aaah, just LOVE classic cars!

"Jerkwater" meaning insignificant has a travelling history. During the days of steam trains, buckets of water were used to keep the train moving. The trains would stop at small towns along the way and the designated "water boy" would hop off the train and fill the buckets with water so as to keep a supply on the train. Henceforth, "jerkwater" is used to mean something insignificant, e.g. "jerkwater town."

The Phoenix is a mythological creature and a very lonely bird, as only one Phoenix can exist at a time. The symbol of resurrection and immortality, the Phoenix is a beautiful bird that lives as long as 1,000 years (according to Pliny). When it is time for the bird to die, it builds a nest of aromatic herbs and sits in it until the sun ignites the nest. Out of the ashes crawls a worm that grows into the new Phoenix.

For eight hours a day dolphins are fully awake, but the rest of the time they're on cruise control. You can munch away - chocolate not only does not promote tooth decay, it might prevent it. According to the American Dental Association, milk chocolate contains ingredients, such as calcium and phosphate, that might modify acid production in the mouth that leads to cavities. Some oils in chocolate might also prevent tooth decay. Chocolate does contain sugar, of course, but these are simple sugars that are less harmful than the complex sugars contained in other foods.

The gelatin in Jell-O is made up of boiled bones, hides, and sinews from pigs and cattle - basically any left-over animal parts. To make the gelatin taste and look good, food coloring, sugar, and flavoring are added.

According to folk tradition, if something is broken inside the house, two more breakages will follow. The best thing to do, if you want to avoid losing possessions you truly love, is to immediately destroy two worthless things, or the pieces of the thing already broken. This ends the "curse." By the way, to break something that has been given by a lover could mean the relationship is next.

Folk legends from around the world espouse the belief that the reflection you see in the mirror, or in a pool of water, is actually the soul temporarily separated from the body. To break a mirror could mean a death in the house, or at the very least, bad luck for a long while. To look in a mirror and NOT see your reflection is a very bad omen that means the soul has already departed and death is certain.

Elvis never toured in Europe because his manager, the Colonel was a Dutch expatriate who could not return to Holland (I forget why). Anyroad, Elvis was never able to tour Europe because of this.
The basset hound Elvis sang "Hound Dog" to in 1956 was a male basset hound named Sherlock.
Cleo, a basset hound who found her 15 minutes of fame on a 1955-58 TV show called "The People's Choice" was the first TV dog to have a human speak for her. She predated Mr. Ed, the famed fictitious talking horse whose show ran from 1960-66.
The hush puppy basset hound was related to Cleo. That basset hound was used on TV commercials in 1966.

refused to wear uniforms until after the U.S. Civil War.
In 1844, policemen in New York City staged a strike

their opposition was that they considered uniforms to
be symbols of servitude, as maids and butlers wore
them in the old country.

Snake charmers do not really charm or hypnotize cobras with their flute-playing. The cobra, which is actually deaf to normal sounds, sways back and forth in response to the motion of the flute. Snake charmers avoid being bitten by staying outside of the striking distance of the snake, by relying on the cobra's poor day-vision, and sometimes by actually sewing the snake's mouth shut or removing its fangs beforehand.

draft the Civil Rights Act of 1964 at the request of President Lyndon

Wrigley Field was not originally built for the Cubs. The park was built in 1914 for teh Chicago Whales of the Federal league, and when that league folded after 1915,the Whales' owner Charles Weegham, bought the Cubs and moved them into what was then Weegham Park(Cubs Park in 1920,Wrigley Field in 1926).

Sushi was orignally just a way to preserve fish. Then someone tasted the vinegared rice that was a rresult of the packing f the fish in it for preservation, and Sushi as we know it was born.

A car traveling at a constant speed of 60 miles per
hour would take longer than 48 million years to reach
the nearest star (other than our Sun), Proxima Centauri.
This is about 685,000 average human lifetimes.

CBS Evening News with anchor Walter Cronkite was network
TV’s first 30-minute evening newscast. It was expanded from
its previous 15-minute format beginning with the September 3,
1963 telecast. At the end of that inaugural 30-minute show,
Cronkite first uttered his famous tagline, “And that’s the way it is.”

It can take a deep-sea clam up to 100 years to reach
0.3 inches (8 millimeters) in length. The clam is among
the slowest growing, yet longest living species on the planet.

James Arness, the actor best known for his portrayal of U.S.
Marshall Matt Dillon in the long-running TV series Gunsmoke,
was the first WW II American soldier to jump off his boat at the
Anzio beachhead. He was ordered by his commander to do
so because, standing at 6' 8" in height, he was the tallest man
in his company, and the water's depth needed to be tested as
a safety precaution.

Sir Francis Drake and his crew landed in what is now
California on June 17, 1579. The natives thought they
were gods and offered them their entire country. Drake
accepted and claimed the land in the name of Queen
Elizabeth, calling it New Albion.

"Cryptozöology" is, literally," the study of hidden animals." Examples include the study of such creatures as Bigfoot,
the chupacabra, and the Loch Ness monster. Cryptozoology
is not a recognized branch of the science of zoology. Dr.
Bernard Heuvelmans coined the term to describe his
investigations of animals unknown to science.

Soldiers arrived to fight the Battle of Marne in World War I --
not on foot or by military airplane or military vehicle -- but
by taxi cabs. France took over all the taxi cabs in Paris to
get soldiers to the front. (It couldn't have been raining if
they found THAT many taxis!!)
