View Full Version : Other songs that are special

I guess we all have songs from others than the 4 we normally talk about, that give you shivers (is that english?) meaning it really touches you deep inside like Beatles tunes.

I have that e.g. with the live version of Hotel California.

If I listen to that intro, with the spanish guitar, leading to the recognition when the real intro begins and you hear the audience going out of their mind, it goes through my body, like it would also be at one of the Beatles concerts.

Got the same, anyone? Which songs?

------------------
When we started actually recording "While My Guitar Gently Weeps" it was just my playing the acoustic guitar and singing it [This solo version appears on the Anthology 3 CD-GW Ed.] and nobody was interested. Well, Ringo probably was, but John and Paul weren't. When I went home that night, I was really disappointed, because I thought, Well, this is really quite a good song, it's not as if it shitty! The next day, I happened to drive back into London with Eric Clapton, and while we were in the car I suddenly said, "Why don't you come and play on this track?" And he said, "Oh, I couldn't do that. The others wouldn't like it."

Yes, absolutey, FP! Good topic, too. I know you didn't ask which songs made you remember what, but I just had to add these. I'll narrow it down to three.

ATTICS OF MY LIFE by the Grateful Dead. When I hear this song, I'm instantly transported back in my mind to junior high school 6 years ago. If I hear this song anywhere, I just stop what I'm doing and fit hundreds of memories into those 3-4 minutes.

AFRICA by Toto. For some reason (honestly, I have no idea) when I hear this song, it reminds me of when I was in high school and my orchestra took a trip to San Francisco, which was one of the best times of my life. I guess I listened to this song a lot on the trip or something. Great memory I have there.

PACHELBEL'S CANON by Pachelbel. I love classical music and I grew up listening to this song. It's just so beautiful. I can't even express in words how much I love this song.

The First Time, yeah does also bring back memories to me, in my case on the little space WE needed on the dance floor.

Actually, what I mean about thses songs is not only memories, but specially the thrills and shivers that go through your body when hearing them.

But we can include memories too.

In that case, my first big love bought me Woman Is The Nigger Of The World when I was on holiday and coming back she gave me the single and we listened to it over-and-over.
Brings back memories every time.

As also Without you by Harry Nilsson.

And Woodstock by Matthews Southern Comfort.

"Oh yeah" by Roxy Music and "Days" by the Kinks are two that immediately spring to mind. The first because it reminds me of the 6 months I spent in Germany, which were, to say the least, an experience. I was 20, living away from home for the first time, dealing with John's death, coping with an insanely nasty roommate, not sure what I was doing with my life....well, you get the idea. One of the worst nights, I heard this song and it just kept me going.

"Days" because it's perfect. Beautiful lyrics; I'd love to have somebody think this way about me after I'm gone. And because the first time I ever heard/saw Ray Davies sing this in person, I practically got weak in the knees! http://www.beatlelinks.net/ubb/smilies/images/icons/smile.gif

Eric Clapton's, "Wonderful Tonight" does it for me. It's my and my husband's song. It was the first number we danced to together at our wedding and to this day (we've been married for over 7 years) whenever we hear it, my husband stops whatever it is he is doing, takes me in his arms and we dance. I love it.

I hadn't experienced this before, so I figured out I just had to share it with all of you. The only ones who could have put my actual feelings into words and music were The Beatles. But since this topic is called "Other Songs That Are Special", I'm just discovering some of Fleetwood Mac's (particularly Stevie Nicks') work. I just mentioned "Silver Springs" as a very special song to me... But now I've downloaded one that just touched my heart in an amazing way... So there is good music, apart from The Beatles. Not as great as them, of course, but still from the heart of the composer to the heart of the listener... http://www.beatlelinks.net/ubb/smilies/musicnotes.gif

Here are the lyrics...

"Storms"
(Stevie Nicks)

Every night that goes between
I feel a little less
As you slowly go away from me
This is only another test

Every night you do not come
Your softness fades away
Did I ever really care that much?
Is there anything left to say?

Every hour of fear I spend
My body tries to cry
Living through each empty night
A deadly call inside

I haven't felt this way I feel
Since many a year ago
But in those years and the lifetimes past
I did not deal with the road

And I did not deal with you I know
Though the love has always been
So I search to find an answer there
So I can truly win

Every hour of fear I spend
My body tries to cry
Living through each empty night
A deadly call inside

So I try to say "goodbye, my friend
I'd like to leave you with something warm"
But never have I been a blue calm sea
I have always been a storm
I have always been a storm...

http://www.beatlelinks.net/ubb/smilies/musicnotes.gif

This is almost as good as poetry, to my tastes. This woman really touched my heart. And, without knowing me, she could tell precisely what was happening to me (not always talking about love, but mostly about life and everything else)... I thought I'd share this with all of you... http://www.beatlelinks.net/ubb/smilies/images/icons/smile.gif

Ooh...wow...

"(I Love You) For Sentimental Reasons" by Nat King Cole (which was the "other" song my husband and I danced to at our wedding -- the first one was Mary Chapin Carpenter's version of John's "Grow Old With Me.")

Other songs mean a lot to me because they so vividly recreate a time and place -- like the other songs that were popular in the summer of 1975, the year I became a Beatles fan:

"Love Will Keep Us Together" by the Captain and Tenille
"Someone Saved My Life Tonight" by Elton John

I hear those songs, and I am instantly 14 again, and that was a GREAT summer!

My husband has a bunch too -- he says:

Toccata and Fugue in D Minor by Bach
The Mars Movement from Holst's "The Planets"
Brain Damage/Eclipse by Pink Floyd
Aaron Copland's Third Symphony (Fanfare for the Common Man)
Amazing Grace, particularly on bagpipes
The Empires Theme from The Empire Strikes Back

(I think his choices are interesting, no?)

What a neat topic!

Yeah! It's fantastic. Jahn Gillan (sorry, if I misspelled it) is perfect for this role. His voice and appearance fit to the image of Jesus, I think so.

I prefer the movie soundtrack. Was it Ted Neely who did JC? The music I find sooo fantastic. And I find the movie inspiring.

A little trivia here: Yvonne Elliman and Barry Dennen appeared on the original soundtrack and in the movie. Yvonne was Mary Magdalene and Barry played Pontius Pilate.

The Mary Chapin Carpenter version of "Grow old with me" is greta my mom would sing that all the time. The song makes me cry.
Here's my list:

Never my love - The Association
Leaving on a jet plane- John Denver
Talking candy bar blues- Peter,Paul, and Mary (I don't know if anyones actually heard this but it was actually the lullaby my dad would sing to me)
Friends- Steven Curtis Chapman (THE ultimate goodbye/graduation song, I cry everytime I hear it)
I got you babe- Sonny and Cher
Sugar- The Archies
Tiny Dancer- Elton John
Piano Man- Billy Joel
Black Water- The Doobie Brothers
What it takes-Aerosmith
Born to be wild- Steppenwolf
Ain't to proud to beg- The Tempations
Oh there are so many more I couldn't mention them all.
Jesus Christ Superstar I love that show, if I met a man that can sing 'Gethsamane ( I only want to know)' in full voice I would worship the musical ground he walked on. I love Godspell too, 'Bless the Lord' was my first big solo in a musical.

Do you mean the song that has
the catch phrase "Sail away, sail away,
sail away"?,etc. If so, I really love that
one. Or if it's a differant song, perhaps
they're both on the same album(?)

Enya gives me the chills too, but it's "Watermark" that does it for me, it reminds me of my grandmother who passed away. Other songs that gives me the chills...(besides The Beatles)...hmmm...there are so many... Okay, I don't know if this song give me the chills but it always makes me want to cry (does that count), "I Will Remember You" by Sarah McLachlan . Okay so it's a little sappy...but it still makes me want to cry. http://www.beatlelinks.net/ubb/smilies/cry4.gif

Enya's Only Time does that to me because it was played at my friends funeral.

Enya was played at my friend Trista's funeral too, it wasn't played at my grandmother's but the music still reminds me of her. Enya's music is so beautiful...I sort of wish I didn't associate it with funerals; although when I hear the music it's a nice reminder of the people who even though I don't see anymore I still love.

Awesome! I thought I was the only person who liked her. Do you like I Love You by her, Jamers? That's one of my favorite. Gets me in a lovey dovey mushy romantic mood. http://www.beatlelinks.net/ubb/smilies/inlove2.gif

Their are a few songs:
1) 'Like A Rolling Stone'-Bob Dylan
2) 'Stand By Me'-Ben E. King
3) 'Tears In Heaven'-Eric Clapton
4) 'Learn To Fly'-Pink Floyd

I'm sure their are more, but these are what I could think of off the top of my head. http://www.beatlelinks.net/ubb/smilies/thumbsup.gif

Oh, absolutely...I saw them do Stella Blue one time (maybe late 1980's? I forget!) in Berkeley. I had seen it so many times before, but this one time I just froze. Jerry was so "there" and it was so sad & beautiful. I was particularly "tuned in" that evening http://www.beatlelinks.net/ubb/smilies/images/icons/smile.gif and the song made me cry. After Jerry finished his beautiful song, he dedicated it to the wife of one of their roadies who had been killed that very night on the way to the show. It really struck me of how what George said was so true...the space between us is "buzzing" as well~~~ and John, too.."Intuition, takes you there...."!! Beautiful song!

No, LOL. I was just being silly because Hootie does have a song with the exact same name.
