OK everyone.... http://www.beatlelinks.net/ubb/smilies/flower.gif
I'm planning on getting a guitar and taking lessons.
I think I want to go with the Bass Guitar. But I really have no idea about it.
Can anybody give me suggestions on how to determine what would be best for me?

If you don't have any other friends who play, playing bass might not be the greatest idea....bass works better in a band/group situation than as a solo instrument. And you'd better have strong fingers if you want to play bass! That said, I always think it's cool when girls play bass and I've always wanted to learn. I play lefthanded guitar due to a childhood accident and I just KNOW if I started playing lefthanded bass, I would NEVER hear the end of it! http://www.beatlelinks.net/ubb/smilies/images/icons/smile.gif

Thank you Rellevart...that's what I thought about Bass too. I'm thinking that for practical reasons I shouldn't go with it. Because I would probably be solo more than with group. You should go ahead and learn The Left Handed Bass...http://www.beatlelinks.net/ubb/smilies/images/icons/wink.gif

Any one else have suggestions? http://www.beatlelinks.net/ubb/smilies/rocknroll.gif

I taught myself bass back in high school. I picked the bass over the guitar for a few reasons. First of all, I saw myself as the next Paul McCartney. Second, I figured 4 strings would be easier than 6. I was right about one of these things...

If you're going to be playing alone at home or in front of your stereo, acoustic guitar is the way to go. You can take it anywhere, play it anywhere, play it without any extra equipment, and play all by yourself. And it's a lot more enjoyable to play along with songs when you can strum entire chords instead of just picking out bass notes.

I play bass and I have to say that though it isn't a "solo" insturment I have more fun playing bass then I do guitar.

Anyway if you do decide to buy an electric bass, you first have to decide if you want a blues bass or rock bass ( a blues bass has a softer sound)If you want a blues bass your best bet is a Fender. For either bass you want atleast two pickups but three is better. A nice middle of the line bass is a DeArmond, they are the company that makes Fender pickups, they also have a nice slender neck for those with smaller hands.

You enjoy bass more...but it's not "solo"
So...what do you have to call your buddies up everytime you want to play?
Or do you play alone and enjoy?
I'm sincerely asking these ?'s because I want to make the right decision.
If I want to be able to play for friends and sing along should I forget bass?

I'm naturally left handed, so if/when I buy a guitar it costs a lot more as they have to be custom built. My brother's also left handed, and plays bass in a band. He managed to get hold of a Hofner Viola Bass imitation which he won't let me touch.

I dabble a bit with bass, and when I play I sometimes have to play a righthand strung bass upside down, but it works for me!

I would start out with a 6 string. It's more of a solo instrument. You will probably
have more incentive to learn (songs/chords), and you can always learn the bass later (Paul did),as the bottom 4 strings on a 6 string are the same as the bass.

I favor a 6 stringed acoustic guitar. It's pretty easy to learn chords (your fingers will hurt until you develop callouses) (and you can't have long nails.) I don't play bass, but have always thought it would be fun to learn.

It can be played alone you just have to know the more melodic bass riffs for instance playing 'Louie Louie' alone is pretty dull because it's a four note sequence repeated over and over again but songs like 'In-a-gadda-da-vida' and even 'Day Tripper' to some extent are excellent songs to do by yourself. My favorite song to play is 'Blister in the sun' that is an excellent bass song because bass doubles guitar.

It just comes straight to the topic, even though this is "Off The Beatle Track"... Anyway, I played some keyboards before but I totally forgot about it, and I see the guitar as a pretty difficult instrument to me (I only know one chord: D, but if Ringo could write "Coochy Coochy" only around the "E" chord, well I guess that's not too bad...). So my best wishes of good luck in that, Eleanor. http://www.beatlelinks.net/ubb/smilies/inlove1.gif
