I'm getting my tonsels out in a week. I was just wondering if anyone got their tonsels out and wants to share their feelings, etc. Thanks. http://www.beatlelinks.net/ubb/smilies/rainbow4.gif

Hi Strawberry Fields -- I had my tonsils out when I was eight years old (31 years ago -- ouch!) and all I remember is that I had a very sore throat and could only eat soft and cold foods like ice cream and yogurt and applesauce for a week. That, and it was probably the quietest time anyone ever spent with me since I was afraid to talk! http://www.beatlelinks.net/ubb/smilies/rotate.gif I'm sure you will be fine! They don't do tonsillectomies as much as they used to when I was a kid, but remember, the procedure has come a long way in 31 years!! http://www.beatlelinks.net/ubb/smilies/images/icons/smile.gif

Oh I got my tonsils out 9 years ago... And sorry to say this, but in a week you will feel an unbelieveble pain in your throat. You'll only be able to swallow some fluids and ice-creams and things like that. But after that you will be able to spend some time well attended by your family, and lying on bed with nothing else to do. Later on, you will find out that you have else health problems: believe it or not, I haven't had so many dark hoarses since that tonsillectomy... http://www.beatlelinks.net/ubb/smilies/images/icons/smile.gif (Although I'm having one right now... http://www.beatlelinks.net/ubb/smilies/images/icons/frown.gif)

Good luck! http://www.beatlelinks.net/ubb/smilies/rainbow3.gif

NWM, I had all four of my taken out back in 1982. As I was growing up, the dentist said that there would be plenty of room for them. Well, he was http://www.beatlelinks.net/ubb/smilies/skull.gif wrong. There was no room for them, so out they came.
After they were gone, everyone told me to rest. I felt fine and wanted to go bowl that night. My teammates wouldn't let me. http://www.beatlelinks.net/ubb/smilies/angry3.gif

I heard it was best to get 'em all out at once and get it over with - I just hope you had the full anaesthetic when you had yours out back then! Some people have told me their jaw swells up afterwards and they spit blood for the next few days. http://www.beatlelinks.net/ubb/smilies/lips1.gif

Good luck! I had 3 out at once and the two that were not impacted were no problem at all. The other one took a lot longer to heal, but it really wasn't all that painful. Hope you also find that to be the case.

The http://www.beatlelinks.net/ubb/smilies/queen.gif of pain avoidance had all of her teeth yanked in 2 rounds last year... the top gums bled like mad, and it did hurt rather fiercely at first, but that's probably because it took over 3 hours to have it done - the silly dr. lost part of one of my wisdom teeth down my throat, and I had to have x-rays right quick before they could finish. After I finally get back from x-ray, the elderly lady in the chair next to mine went into insulin shock rather suddenly, and all hands were required in there... Needless to say, the novacain wore off long before anyone could get back to me http://www.beatlelinks.net/ubb/smilies/images/icons/frown.gif

The bottom teeth not only took under an hour, but there was very little bleeding involved, and I was able to go to work that night.

You bet! The dentist gave me two pills to take 30 minutes before the procedure. One was an antibiotic and the other, a pain pill. The second pill was slightly smaller around than a pencil eraser, in size.
MAN, what a pill! I was really feeling no pain whatsoever when I got to the dentist. He put me in the chair and the assistant hooked up an IV into the back of my left hand. About one "minute" later, I was leaving his office.

None of mine were impacted, they just didn't have room. The only part that sounded painful was that he had to "cut" out the two bottom ones. It seemed that the roots for those two were wrapped around my jawbone.

Unfortunately, Jami and 4thGenfan, it's an all too common happening. When I had my bottom teeth extracted in September, the wisdom teeth were indeed roots deep around the jawbone. The twisting and pulling the poor doctor had to do almost made me sick to my stomach, although the novacain kept all feeling away (Thank http://www.beatlelinks.net/ubb/smilies/god.gif!)

So... would you say it's better to get your wisdom teeth out before they sprout up (i.e. before they shoot through your gums and are visible), or it really doesn't matter? I think all 4 of mine are now visible.

Oh yeah, Jtal...it was pretty cool...I remember that my entire third grade class made me cards and the teacher sent a bunch of stuff (not schoolwork!) home to me...I got to stay home for a week and play, and it was great! As you say, heaven for an 8-year-old!

I don't remember much else about it, except that it was in a hospital here in NYC across the street from Gracie Mansion (the mayor's house) and that was the first time I ever saw it, from the hospital room window. Weird, the kind of things you remember, eh? http://www.beatlelinks.net/ubb/smilies/rainbow4.gif

Most reputable dentists won't even attempt extraction of wisdom teeth before they "sprout up", unless there is sufficient evidence of advanced infection present.
