Didja notice that the Olympic rings are right up there? I really am not looking forward to them coming here next year, though, there're too many people here as it is! But at least we bought them fair and square. http://www.beatlelinks.net/ubb/smilies/images/icons/rolleyes.gif

Has anyone here had the Olympics and enjoyed 'em?

Well, we had them down in Sydney not too long ago... but Brisbane was lucky enough to get a lot of the Olympic soccer played up here, so I was fortunate enough to go along and see just about every game... the atmosphere on that first night especially was a once-in-a-life-time experience.http://www.beatlelinks.net/ubb/smilies/thumbsup.gif

My brother lives in Atlanta and said he was glad he didn't live there when the Olympics were there...the already horrendous Atlanta traffic would have been unbearable! My husband went to the Montreal Olympics years ago and enjoyed it, but he also remembers the crowds and chaos created by the Lake Placid games, which were held near his family's vacation home.

All I can personally say is that if the Olympics ever came to New York, I'd make sure I was out of town for those two weeks, because I am SURE that normal life would be impossible!

Good luck when they hit Salt Lake, 4th Gen...but I still think you'll have it easier than NYC would! http://www.beatlelinks.net/ubb/smilies/square.gif

Ok well, hmm....not looking forward to the traffic! Plus all the out of country-ers are gonna hate it because you can't drink or smoke here. Unless the laws just happen to mysteriously change as soon as the Olympics start......

Really?? No http://www.beatlelinks.net/ubb/smilies/beer.gif or http://www.beatlelinks.net/ubb/smilies/smoking1.gif ? Why not?
I used to live in Dallas, and in a lot of the surrounding counties you weren't allowed to drink....only in restaurants, I think. Tell me more about that.

Guys, honestly, it's because of the Mormons. I hope no one here is Mormon or I'm probably going to offend them. But oh well, this is how I feel about it.

They have this lil' religious rule called the Word of Wisdom. According to it, tea, coffee, tobacco, alcohol, etc. (you get the point) is going to get you in a LOT of trouble with the Man upstairs. So what do they do? Well, since there IS NO seperation of Church and State here, the Mormon government simply decided the best thing would be to completely do away with drinking and smoking for EVERYONE. Afterall, everyone in Utah is Mormon, right?? http://www.beatlelinks.net/ubb/smilies/images/icons/rolleyes.gif

The only places you can drink are private clubs and the only places you can smoke are outside. I don't drink OR smoke, so those rules are fine by me. But I know OH-SO-MANY people that are upset by them.

Oh, and also? If you live here and are polygamist, chances are no one's going to stop you.

That is soooo awful, 4thGenFan...... I could never live there. Of course, I live in Louisiana, where everything is so lax. I understand needing to have rules, but I think that is just so ridiculous! If the Mormons don't want to drink or smoke, they don't have to if they don't want to. I don't think they should pass judgement, or laws for that matter, just because their religion says it's wrong. My opinion, anyway.

ANYWAY!!!! jtal..... where have you been, honey?? You can get the cool smilies on one of the topics in the "site feedback" forum...... I don't even think that's what it's called anymore, but you get my drift! Check'em out!

SleepyHead

You're right, Jami, things do tend to be a bit lax around here. However, it's gotten a lot stricter in the past several years. For instance, there isn't a McDonald's in town where you can light up a ciggie after eating all that cholesterol. Most places right here in Shreveport/Bossier have a small smoking section with a waiting line, and a huge, sparsely populated non-smoking section... Even the business owners don't seem to care what side their bread is buttered on.

As far as drinking itself is concerned, we have some rather strict regulations:

1) You must be over 21 to legally purchase and consume alcoholic beverages.
2) You must be in the presence of your parent/legal guardian/spouse (who must be of legal drinking age) in order to consume an alcoholic beverage, if you are under 21.
3) You must have a valid id - and there are only 5 that are acceptable; e.g.
*a) Louisiana issued driver's license;
*b) Louisiana issued identification card (cannot be issued for job purposes, must be a general id card);
*c) Military ID card;
*d) Visa/passport; or
*e) Driver's license or state issued ID from another state.
4) The id must have your picture on it, your birthdate, and must not be expired.
5) The id must be on your person where you are purchasing or consuming the beverage.
6) It cannot be temporary in nature.
7) It cannot be damaged in any way.
8) It doesn't matter if you are only 21 or 121... no ID, no drinking (legally, that is).
9) Furthermore, you may not drink outside any licensed premises.
10) A licensed server is required by law to cease sales to a person who appears to be intoxicated.
11) A licensed server must use any or all of the following signs to determine the level of intoxification of his/her customer:
*a) Loud, obnoxious behaviour.
*b) Rudeness or offensive behaviour.
*c) Questioning the ability of the server.
*d) Becoming belligerent.
*e) Offending or otherwise bothering other patrons to excess.
*f) Stumbling, loss of balance.
*g) Slurring of words or speech.
*h) Changes in behaviour patterns.
*i) Using loud, or offensive obscenities, or making obscene gestures or remarks.
*j) Changes in appearance, such as reddening of the eyes, glassy eyes, or even appearing sleepy or laying their head down.
*k) Vomiting or other physical signs of intoxication.

The fines are outrageous, too. For one incident of underage, or non-licensed purchase, the buyer can be fined up to $200, the vendor/server up to $500, and the licensed place of business up to $2000 - and that's for first offence.

And my customers want to know why I card them???? http://www.beatlelinks.net/ubb/smilies/thinker.gif

Man, all this stuff about people imposing their rules on everyone reminds me of Mayor Giuliani of New York City...he's a fascist! He might have helped the quality of life in the city become much better (and it is!) but now he's going so far as to form a commission to decide what kind of art is "decent" for a museum to show, making trouble for every single schools chancellor who comes along whether he appointed the guy or not (and people want to know why the New York City public schools suck! -- oh, and BTW, the MAYOR'S kids go to Catholic school!), and clamping down on jaywalkers! But meanwhile he hasn't done anything to improve police relations with minority communities or anything constructive to address the many problems that still exist!!

I find the art censorship thing particularly disturbing...didn't Hitler do the same thing?!? http://www.beatlelinks.net/ubb/smilies/angry2.gif And besides, what makes him the one who is such an expert on what the general public should be allowed to view!!! God, it just burns me up!

So, 4th Gen, I can see your point about the Mormons and their rules where you live -- if not everyone is part of your group, you should not have the right to impose your will on the entire population!! I think living in Salt Lake would make me NUTS! (Not that I do any of the things that aren't allowed -- but it's the principle of the thing!)
