Is there anymore details about the re-release of George's back catalogue, since that Dhani's interview a few months ago?

When it's gonna happen? It will be all the solo albums or only the Dark Horse ones?

Thanx.

There are some unconfirmed reports that Bangla Desh will be the first in February 2004, as also Living In The Material World.

Typicaly the ones that are still avaiable in the shops. Alright there will be bonustracks, but I can't find "33 1/3" "Gone Troppo" and "Somewhere In England" and others from his Warner output, at all on cd. On the other hand, it is logical to start from the beginning, rather then somwhere in the middle with the re-release of the albums.

I am quite lucky that I managed to get most of George's albums on CD before they went out of print (apart from Traveling Wilburys Vol 1, Wonderwall and Electronic Sounds) so I don't really mind which order they come out. I'm just really looking forward to any bonus tracks. Looks like it may be an expensive year though!

There is unconfirmed information on Abbey Road's newspage, coming from Sweden, which says,

The remastered Thirty Three & A Third, George Harrison, Somewhere In England, Gone Troppo, Cloud Nine and Live In Japan CDs will be relased on 25 February 2004 through EMI. New 12-page booklets with some new pictures are included in all releases. All albums, exept Live In Japan, will include at least one bonus track.

The Live In Japan album will be a double SACD (also playable on most DVD and CD-players) in stereo or Surround 5.1

A limited edition cubic box set "George Harrison * The Dark Horse Years 1976-1992² includes the 6 albums plus a "special DVD" and a 24-page CD-sized hardback book.

This sounds very very interesting, but is still a rumour.

What I have done, is I have written an e-mail to Capitol Records (=EMI) asking them for any detailed information.

When I hear from them I will let you know. If they don't reply, I will address direct to EMI in London. But I have written with Capitol Records before and they were very cooperative.

I got Gone Troppo and 33 1/3 from www.baltcd.com. (http://www.baltcd.com.) Last year, Rob kindly provided that site and that is an EXCELLENT place to get Harrison CDs, bootlegs and standards for your collection! graemlins/thumbsup2.gif

There is a new report saying EMI UK will offer a re-release of the Dark Horse catalog March 15. It will feature 5 CDs, 2 SACDs and one DVD. No other info.

I think it's best we leave it till some real news comes about.

A SACD is a super hybrid CD that is suppose to have the clearest recored sound availible. Seems like George is going to get the same treatment that Bob Dylan got.

Here's another update from EMI UK (Not Confirmed I think )

These catalog titles are scheduled for a 23 Feb 2004 release date in the UK:
George Harrison Cloud Nine Parlophone 594 0902 CD
George Harrison George Harrison Parlophone 594 0872 CD
George Harrison Gone Troppo Parlophone 594 0892 CD
George Harrison Live In Japan Parlophone 594 6652 2xSACD
George Harrison Somewhere In England Parlophone 594 0882 CD
George Harrison Thirty Three & 1/3 Parlophone 594 0862 CD

George Harrison The Dark Horse Catalogue Parlophone 594 0852 5CD+2SACD+DVD
Assuming this is the Box set )
This one is scheduled for 15 March 2004 in the UK:

The "special DVD" included in the George Harrison limited box will contain 90 minutes of videos, interviews and some kind of unreleased rare material. One part will be concert footage from the Japan tour and that will be mixed in Surround 5.1 as well as stereo, the rest of the DVD is of course in stereo.

No official reports yet.

I know this is all speculation and all but my question is what cd's will be in the Dark Horse box set?

I know there was a Dark Horse (best of) album but I don't know whats on it.

I mean if I were to get all the cd's that are rereleased in Feb (for fear of not finding them again) and then want to get the box set for the dvd, how many repeats would there be?

Can I assume the release in the US would be 'bout the same time?

<font size="2" face="Tahoma, Arial, sans-serif">I think by buying the boxed set instead of the individual CDs you'd "win":
- the 'deluxe' packaging (one would assume);
- another booklet;
- the extra DVD

But the albums inside it would be the same, i.e. all the studio albums from Thirty-Three & 1/3 to Cloud Nine plus Live In Japan (still a 2-CD set, right?), all with bonus tracks.

Just to write this makes me impatient!

And to think this will arrive to Chile in about 2009! images/icons/wink.gif

Yeah the bootleg version of Shanghai Surprise!is a bit shaky, tho the quality is good. It's a great song and I am glad that's finally being released officialy. George and Vicki Brown.

Tho the short film versions sounds really clear, which makes me wonder which version will be included as a bonus track, I am hoping ofcourse for the complete 5+ minutes version.

At Abbey Road's newspage there is a very long discussion on songs people would want to have included.

So for those interested
http://abbeyrd.best.vwh.net/fabnews.htm

We can do that here as well, if you guys are interested? Like start a topic per album and do suggestions/wishes?

It's a bit fiction I believe, but it may be nice to do so. Would anyone have picked the ones George chose for ATMP?

Well as for "I Live For You" I'm glad he put that on, it's just great to play this polished version other than those from the bootlegs I have.

There is still so much beautiful work out there, like the other Dark Horse demo, the one without the hoarse voice, which I think will be only preferred maybe by the male members here graemlins/wink1.gif

For ATMP Dhera Dhun would be a nice bonus track from that era, tho somehow musically it doesn't quite fit in. Perhaps it would be better to include it as a bonus track on "Living in the material world".

Dec 13, 2003, 03:07 AM
Not all SACD's are mixed for 5.1. Some are only stereo mixes, and some contain stereo mixes alongside a 5.1 mix.

This disc will probably be a hybrid SACD, which means that it will play as a CD in normal CD players, but you need an SACD player to hear the superior SACD quality of the disc.

SACD stereo mixes are much fuller and warmer than CD's. You will need a surround sound set up to listen to the 5.1 mix, if there is one.

Oh, also there is news all the reissues will be through EMI/Capitol now, even those originally on Warner Bros. And there is some very interesting comments from Eric Hartvigsen, posted on Abbeyrd's newspage. He contrasts what he feels George indicated his wishes to be re. Brainwashed, etc, with what the finished product was. It was interesting to see this layed out so nicely.

It is easy to say that I would have wanted some more bonus tracks and also some more videos on the DVD, but maybe they just keep this for future releases.

I am really interested in the Dark Horse Feature on the DVD. I remember from a 33 1/3 interview that George said that he himself was filming a sort of promo documentary for Dark Horse and I have always wondered what became of that.

Also what will immediately get my attention is the 12 page booklets including lyrics and new photographs.

I am sure the re-mastered sound quality will also be great to experience.

So we will have lots to discuss about this round February 24th regarding these albums and the DVD.

I have just done some price research on where is the chepest place to get these items and I have discovered that www.bn.com (http://www.bn.com) is cheaper $2.50 for each single disc, and is $18.50 for the box set.

In the eyes of a teenager I'm noticing that the box set is $65+ more then buying all the Discs seprately. In my eyes the DVD doesn't seem like it's worth $65.

But please try and convinse why it could in fact be worth that much money.

I heard about the release of these discs on Friday night, whilst driving home from church. February 24 was given as the release date. It got me very excited, needless to say, but fortunately I managed to maintain control of my vehicle! graemlins/smile1.gif *

I'd been thinking about buying some of this stuff from baltcd.com, but perhaps I'll wait just a bit longer for these releases. One thing is for sure; it will end up in my collection one way or another!

I am not really happy with the information how it goes out.

But that does not complete the world ofcourse.

The Dark Horse Years - A Biography

Dear Friends,

With release of the George’s The Dark Horse Years box set very, very close we thought it would be rather nice is you had a brief history lesson on the Dark Horse story…

The Dark Horse label was founded by George Harrison in 1974. Between 1976-1992, George recorded six albums for the label, ‘Thirty Three and 1/3’, ‘George Harrison, ‘Somewhere in England’, ‘Gone Troppo’, ‘Cloud Nine’ plus his live concert recording of ‘Live in Japan’

In its first two years, Dark Horse Records released eight albums, including new material by artists as diverse as Ravi Shankar and Jim Keltner and David Foster’s band, Attitudes. 1976 saw Dark Horse move to Warner Brothers in Burbank when Mo Ostin signed George for the remainder of his solo career as well as two albums with the band The Traveling Wilburys.

The Dark Horse Years were a musically prolif ic period for George that allowed him time and space to fully express himself as a songwriter and musician. During that time George revisited songs written while he was still in The Beatles, he wrote music for HandMade Films, his own film company, collaborated with Bob Dylan, Tom Petty, Roy Orbison, Jeff Lynne, Eric Clapton, and Ringo Starr. Although many of the albums were critically acclaimed and commercially successful, the reward for George was always the music itself.

George Harrison - The Dark Horse Years 1976 – 1992 box set is released on February 28th in the USA and 1st March in the UK.

Best wishes,

Yeah i tried best buy today first. They had all the single CDS for 9.99 on sale from 13.99 but I asked the guy who is supposed to stock the cds and he said the box set didn't come out yet and his manager did not know a date for it. I knew he was wrong so I went to FYE at the mall across the street and the guy there knew everything about the George Harrison re-releases. He saw me pick up the Box Set and said yeah we got a ton of those in and they have been selling today. If you don't got enough for it (122.99) we got the single cds on sale over there. I may now be taking my business to FYE where they may cost more but at least they know what the hell they are talking about.

Another press release

George Harrison's Career Commemorated and Celebrated in 2004 with Two Grammys, the Release of His Dark Horse Catalog, and His Induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame

George Harrison -- The Dark Horse Years 1976-1992 (Cloud Nine).

Press Release

HOLLYWOOD--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Feb. 23, 2004--On Feb. 8, 2004, George Harrison was twice honored at the 46th Annual Grammy Awards -- once for "Best Pop Instrumental Performance" for "Marwa Blues," from his last record, "Brainwashed," and again as a member of the Beatles, who were honored with the Presidents Award commemorating their first appearance on "The Ed Sullivan Show."

Feb. 24, 2004 (a day before George's birthday), will see Capitol Records release the newly acquired George Harrison Dark Horse catalogue, featuring six albums which have been unavailable for years. This long awaited catalogue will also be offered in a brand new deluxe box set, including a stunning and extensive booklet featuring unseen photographs, illustrations, press clippings and liner notes by David Fricke, as well as an exclusive 75-minute DVD including seven fully restored music videos.

"George had lots of work lined up in 1999, but his priority was to reissue his entire catalog," Olivia Harrison explains. "He began that process by the remastering of `All Things Must Pass' in 2000. The Dark Horse Years were to follow. These songs are especially dear to me because they chronicle events in our life together ... If you want to know what George was doing those years, just listen to his music."

Finally, this March 15, 2004, George's brilliant career and amazing body of work will again be honored when he's inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. The ceremony will take place in New York and be televised on VH1 Sunday, March 21, at 8 p.m. and 10 p.m.

2004 is turning out to be an exceptional year for an exceptional artist. What better way to celebrate George's legacy than to be putting these wonderful records back into the stores, so that his music will continue to be enjoyed and cherished by generations to come.

Have you noticed all the people bi+ching about typos and everything else on the abbeyrd news site? is it just me or does it seem like everytime something new comes out (Beatles or any solo) that site is filled with overly whiney complaints and nitpickings about everything? good god. They are also likely some of the same people that complained that the Beatles' "1" was a bad idea because anyone who would be interested in those songs already has them on other albums = "it won't sell". graemlins/dunce1.gif What do you want to bet that some of these folks spend Xmas evening complaining and nitpicking about every gift people have given them? just gotta have something to moan and groan about!
There, that's my bi+ching.

IMO
The box set is AWESOME, Thank you once again Oliva/Dhani for finishing what George said he was planning on doing 4 years ago (Yahoo! chat).

The box design is great and the music speaks for itself. images/icons/wink.gif The DVD is great too, i didn't expect to see the little interview segments so that's a Big extra bonus!

I'm happy. No complaints AT ALL.
