Just a quick question...hope it's in the right forum:

Does anyone know if George ever learned to speak, read or write Bangla? I was just thinking of this when I read something about Bangladesh the other day...

...anybody know?

Well, it appears I'm not an expert graemlins/smile1.gif because I don't know if he spoke Bengali (which comes from Sanskrit).

That is, I have never read he spoke other than English with his Indian friends.

I believe you mean to ask if George could speak Hindi, not Bangali. Hindi is the native language of the Indian sub-continent and George had a love with the Hindu religion, while Bangladesh is primarily Muslim - a bit of an amalgum of Hindu/Pakistani culture. I'm sure George picked up a few Hindi phrases over the years as I've heard him read passages from the Vedas, but I don't believe he was fluent.

I know once George was talking about the math teaching programs they have on TV sometimes (or anyway they used to), and about these 'advanced math' shows...he said in so many words that he tried to comprehend them but couldn't, partially because they didn't seem to have much application/value for him. I remember he added, "I would sooner learn Sanskrit".

I am sure he knew bits of Sanskrit, to understand the chants he loved so much.
