Harrison widow 'close to theft deal'

The items included photos and recordings by the Beatle George Harrison's widow is in talks to settle a lawsuit against a relative who allegedly stole personal belongings from their home and tried to sell them.
Olivia Arias Harrison is suing her former brother-in-law Carl Roles after he allegedly took the personal items in the 1970s and tried sell them the day after the pop star's death from cancer on 29 November 2001.

"A settlement is under discussion but there isn't any settlement yet," said Ms Harrison's lawyer Robert Chapman. "I'm confident that we will have a settlement or win the lawsuit."

Mr Roles did not make any comment.

Mr Roles, the former husband of Ms Harrison's sister, is alleged to have stolen personal papers, clothing, photographs and recordings when he worked in the Harrison's home in Los Angeles in the 1970s.

Harrison, 58, died of lung cancer at a friend's home in Los Angeles.

'Money to be made'

Ms Harrison's lawsuit against Mr Roles claims he tried to sell the items to a journalist from Arizona, following the musician's death.

Mr Roles allegedly told the journalist "there was a lot of money to be made from memorabilia related to George Harrison, given his recent death".

The journalist then allegedly told Gavin de Becker, a security consultant who had worked for the Harrisons.

Mr De Becker told the FBI, who sent an agent to contact Mr Roles and his new wife.

During the meeting, Mr Roles allegedly admitted he had stolen 10 boxes worth of property from the Harrisons' home when he lived with them.

Mr Roles later claimed he had recovered the items from the home when it was destroyed by a mudslide in 1980.

Mr Roles has returned many of the items to Ms Harrison, but she is seeking punitive damages.

A judge has ordered the two parties to return to court on 17 April to agree a settlement or set a trial date.

Thanks for posting this~ it looks like this matter can soon be solved and over for Olivia, which is good. This was the last thing she needed to have happen at that time & I sure hope she wins.

Thanks for the update! This so unfortunately reeks of the Frederic Seaman ordeal with John's belongings; but at least this guy didn't write a book (at least not yet graemlins/images/icons/rolleyes.gif *)
Its really sad that Olivia (and Yoko) would have to deal with these sort of things.

I personally wouldn't mind knowing who the "Arizona journalist" is and thank him doing the right thing in contacting Gavin de Becker. Good for him!
