What the hell is this? (http://www.abt.org/performances/metseason.html)
Have you heard anything about it? (look at the bottom of the page, Harrison Tribute).

It's a balet.

That's a sort of dance with men in very tight trousers probably having to protect themselves because they seem to be wearing the same plastic protection element as e.g. boxing guys and ice-hockey players do.

Quite a ballet huh Ladies. OK, maybe it isn't plastic after all graemlins/wink1.gif

The George part was really amazing. No tights there though, but jeans sponsered by Calvin Klein in colors that were very seventies.

They did Something, I dig Love, While my guitar..., Isn't it a pity, Within you Without you and My Sweet Lord.

HC will tell you all the details...., cuz I have to go now (to see all the pretty spots in sunny California) images/icons/smile.gif

We had a great time! images/icons/smile.gif This was the first ballet I have attended~ the crowd sure dresses up differently than at a Dead show. graemlins/laugh5.gif

Well, for starters we had pretty good seats. The place was swank but not so large that folks could not see. We watched some men in tights, the openers, which were nice. But we were a little confused about when the 'real' program would start. images/icons/smile.gif The orchestra had left, and we thought...was that it? graemlins/laugh5.gif But, no, the music came on from the wonderful sound system and we were acoustically surrounded by Pure George himself, no snotty orchestral rendition of his work....that was great.

So, there was our George, and these wonderful modern dancers there to just freely express with their bodies each song. And though it was rehearsed and carefully choreographed, it just flowed along perfectly, right from their hearts it seemed.

First, they opened with Something. The female lead had her back to us, posed absolutely still to the right, while the male lead danced 'towards' her, around her, as in a synchronicity~ tribute befitting the song's lyrics. They made it very much into a love song...and I thought of it also being for Krishna and thought how a more Hindu dance interpretation might have been equally beautiful. But it was very nice.

Then, they went into 'I Dig Love'...dressed in a hot red kind of dress (the female images/icons/wink.gif ), it was very 'hot', a bit hard edged, a romantic interpretation. They would be doing graceful fluid movements with each other and the female lead would 'kick' or 'hit' him off in a way, which was maybe a little stiff or cliche for my taste? But it was very good.

'While My Guitar Gently Weeps' was awesome. It had all the sensuality which may have been a bit lacking in the I Dig Love choreography. It was amazing and absolutely brilliant. There were two, dressed in white, and they moved like one body, so beautiful, so fluid in motion; it was just lovely to watch.

'Isn't It A Pity' proved the show could get even better still. This utilized many dancers, sometimes maybe ten or so on the stage at one time. There was a movement in lines from left to right, dancers walking across, some alone, some in two's....some couples happy and moving together, others not noticing, others dancing in dissonance...a dancer here or there would break out into like a rapturous solo dance with the guitar solo and less so at other times. This whole scene perfectly echoed the meaning behind the song, just such an amazingly constructed dance. Then, towards the end, the entire group was dancing together, but off time slightly, so the movements flowed like waves and emotions, just as in life. All these bodies echoing the same feelings but just not in perfect synchronicity.

It was so amazing.

Then, they did 'Within You Without You'. The review I linked to above did that great justice. They said...
To the strummed rhythms of the sitar of "Within You Without You," Weir creates a mystical duet for Ethan Stiefel, a bare-chested yogi, and Gillian Murphy, clad in a floating shift that transforms the two ballet dancers into Eastern deities as they spiral and coil towards each other within their separate universes of geometric pools of light (imaginatively lit by Brad Fields). Their bodies undulate in skewed, slow motion lifts and invest the duet with a gravity-defying quality as if they were dancing underwater

Then 'My Sweet Lord'... which had the whole cast. I was a bit overpowered by the Hare Krishna refrain heard through these magnificent speakers, and just the joy of seeing the dancers seeming to enjoy themselves so tremendously in this number...maybe Taxgirl can remember it a bit better? images/icons/smile.gif

So, that was the show...such a wonderful tribute. The ladies next to us said Olivia saw the opening premiere in New York. That was very nice to hear and made it even more special.

I could see it 20 more times and see new things each time, I think. So, highly recommended, but don't forget to dress up! images/icons/wink.gif

<font size="2" face="Tahoma, Arial, sans-serif">Don't worry, many times those dresses are rented and besides you probably just got your chin up and acted 100% confident. That way, maybe folks thought you were a wealthy cultured eccentric duo.

I really see you sitting there in trance over the Hare Krishna singing in My Sweet Lord and Taxgirl waking you up afterwards "hellooooo"

Thank you so much HC, you did a wonderful review. I could have written this in Dutch, but certainly not in English. This is exactly how I experienced this too.

My review on MSL images/icons/wink.gif :

During My Sweet Lord it looked like the dancers were flying above the stage. Like birds in the sky. They entered from the left side.. kinda flew over the stage and left on the right side to enter from the left again. It looked like there were over 100 dancers... images/icons/smile.gif They were really chanting with their bodies. A very happy ending of this fantastic show.

At the very end, when the dancers had left the stage, a picture of George came up for just a few seconds before it faded away again. You could almost feel his presence.
It was the same one that was used during the first part of The Concert for George

No, I didn't have to wake up HC from her trance..
Afterwards, we were both quiet for a few moments.
Not too long of course images/icons/wink.gif

<font size="2" face="Tahoma, Arial, sans-serif">Because we were late, we couldn't get in before the intermission and we watched some of the first ballet on a tv screen. People around us started talking to us thinking we were really interested in that ballet. So we must have looked like a cultured duo at the least.
Haha when we found out that the George part came after the intermission and even after another pause, we went to the bar for drinks... images/icons/grin.gif
