Where did you read that? Isn't that something?!?

I for one can't STAND eggs. They are the most disgusting thing ever! The smell, the texture, the taste...It is all horrible!!!

Let us not forget what eggs are supposed to be!

Does anyone have any info on this? Now I am really interested!

It's a good question...it is hard to find any definitive info on George's vegetarianism. Publicly, the definitive list issued by Veggie Times now & then, last had George under the 'assumed to be veggie' list because he did not respond directly to their inquiry.

However, ISKCON members do not eat meat, fish, or eggs. Krishna says in the Gita, "For those who offer me a leaf, a flower, fruit, or water I will accept it." Therefore, prasadam...food offered to Lord Krishna, must be of this nature. Also, dairy is consumed by ISKCON folks because it is spiritually sanctioned by Lord Krishna's love of butter and his tender feelings for cows. Now, however, that may well be reexamined, IMO, because of the atrosities of the dairy indusrty and their abhorant treatment of cows. (An option is milk from free range cows).

For SRF, Yogananda stresses the importance of the vegetarian diet, but does not make it manditory in following his teachings. Whenever we get together socailly through the temple, though, as at a pot luck...the dishes are vegetarian, but eggs are okay to include.

Again, the egg production industry is terrible, with free range eggs being one option. I'm sure George would be aware of these things, so it may be he would avoid eggs.

I did talk with someone who interviewed to be George's groundkeeper/cook in Maui. He said George was definitely a vegetarian, and if I see him again, I will ask about the eggs. images/icons/smile.gif

This is very interesting. HC, thank you for this information. My curiosity has been really piqued by this.

I'd like to know more about the groundskeeper/cook you met in Maui. I think you have a lot of very interesting information.

That's one of the many reasons I love Crackerbox Palace. I always learn something. graemlins/smile1.gif

Thats right,Hare Krishna's dont eat eggs! images/icons/wink.gif !!*Eggs are viewed as "Liquid Flesh", and on a par with Meat..many Hindu's though, while abstaining from meat may eat eggs, likewise many also do not..I would saythough, that George did not eat eggs because Srila Bhaktivedanta Swami (founder of the Hare Krsna movemnt) made a big point of it..also GH srictly avoided Garlic and Onions (other HK taboo's) and im willing to say if he avoided them, he avoided eggs..the best info on George's attitude to Vegetarianism, and his favourite foods can be found in the HK publication Chant and Be Happy..on a streetcorner near you!

i always liked scrambled eggs though..oh well..

Just because Hare Krishnas dont eat eggs doesnt mean George didn't coz he didnt do everything by the book! Anyone got any more info? where did you hear it Beatlebangs1964?

Well, Miss O'Dell, I don't know for sure of course whether he ate eggs or not, but I remember reading somewhere that George could make a "mean omelette." I can't remember where I read it or what period in time it referred to though. And I know George stated in interviews that he did not follow all the rules, s he may not have followed this one either. Sorry I can't be more specific.

Also the garlic and onions one is interesting too. A few years back Reader's Digest published celebrity recipes. One was George Harrison's Lentil Soup. Two of the ingredients were onions and garlic. Hmmm....Man of Mystery! images/icons/smile.gif

Some time ago I read somewhere that he did not like strawberry jam.

It has not been confirmed though.

If George was a vegan, he couldn't eat eggs. Being a vegan means eating no dairy products. And I like eggs. images/icons/smile.gif

I know Ringo likes eggs, he says he had some in the Maharishi's camp in Rishikesh. graemlins/laugh5.gif

When he tells this story on the Michael Aspel show interview does George say anything about eggs then...I'll have to watch it again and see. graemlins/thinker.gif

it makes me think of something a 16 year old reporter from Teen Beat would've asked George in the early Beatlemania days: "George, what color eyes do you have? what size are your shoes? oh, and- do you eat eggs?"

It's kind of a nice thing to know...humor aside graemlins/wink3.gif ...because if George avoided eggs, maybe that would inspire others to rethink the whole egg production industry as well, and their involvment in it by purchasing commercially produced eggs. I am sure you have all seen the shows on how awful this is....

The fellow who I mentioned was not actually the groundkeeper, but he did interview for the job in Maui. He and George had a great conversation, and at length, including vegetarianism. This gentleman is actually a relative, but still we don't cross paths too often, unfortunately. But when we do, I will ask about eggs!

You mentioned George's sister's book....where can I buy it?? images/icons/smile.gif Tell more!!

What about fish? I'm curious because there's a track on the Wilbury's 'Recovered Treasure' bootleg called Fish & Chips. Its just a conversation between George, Jim Keltner and the others. But its so hard to make out whats being said because there are two conversations going on at the same time. It starts with; "Your fish and chips is ready." to which George replies, "I was dreading that now after these..."

Thanks for the link for that recipe book, FPFHOT. There are indeed some nice recipes there. And the one for the potato omelette looks good too SingingOm. Must try some of those recipes.

I think I'll avoid the zuchinni ones though! images/icons/grin.gif

One question though. Does anyone know what "hing" is? Is there something similar?

http://www.theepicentre.com/Spices/asafetid.html
It is also called asafoetida and is available in Indian grocery stores. It is added in place or garlic and onions in some cooking, as in ISKCON where garlic and onions are avoided. It smells very nasty alone...be forwarned! But actually is quite good once cooked in small amounts like in these recipes.
To give an idea, when I first bought some at a bulk spice shop in Santa Cruz, they made me go outside to scoop it!
images/icons/smile.gif
People also use it to aid digestion.

Thanks so much, HC! It sounds interesting. I'll look for some next time I have access to an Indian cooking store. Should be next week.

And I'm glad you told me that it will taste better in cooking than it smells! images/icons/wink.gif I love onions and garlic so I'll see.

Good shelf life too!

The book is "Before He Was Fab" and you can order it on line. I got mine from www.amazon.com (http://www.amazon.com) and I think it is worth it. Jim Kirkpatrick is the author along with George's sister as co-author. I love the book. It is a book that just plain makes me feel good. It is the story of a Beatle in Benton in September, 1963. I really, really, really love this book.

George was plainly well loved -- this book is something that is soothing and very pleasant.

I hope you enjoy it as much as I did, HC. I really love that book and it just plain makes me feel good all over. I just wish there were pics of George in Benton in 1963 when he was there.

That book will certainly make a fine addition to your Beatles' collection. It is such a loving book -- part of what makes this book work for me is that George was so well loved and that is plain throughout this book. That makes me feel really good.

That's what it sounded like to me anyway. Not important, what is important (in this topic) is that Fish was in fact mentioned in the recording; it is inconclusive however, as to whether or not George ate the fish, or if it was possibly Veggie-Fish. images/icons/tongue.gif

As far as the Beatle in Benton book is concerned i also highly recommend it! One of the bits that gets me is the mention of a radio interview that was conducted while he was there. According to the book the tape has since been lost. graemlins/scream1.gif

George bought a lead in Benton and the sales people kept the receipt.
