View Full Version : George and Paul...

Concerning the rumours of who would eventually be producing/completing "Brainwashed"...

I have no problem imagining George telling Olivia, Dhani and Jeff Lynne...

I don't think George would have thought that. Even though he and Paul did not see everything eye-to-eye, George did respect Paul's musical abilities.

The http://www.beatlelinks.net/ubb/smilies/cat.gif speaks (or meows) the truth. http://www.beatlelinks.net/ubb/smilies/images/icons/wink.gif
Though George had choice words for Paul once upon a time, I think the two of them buried the hatchet, so it seemed, during Anthology...? It's not like Paul would barge in on George's recordings anyway. Why would he? He would have known Dhani would do right by them. And it appears that he did. I cannot wait to hear it in its entirety. I wonder how well Brainwashed fares with Sir Paul. I'd like to hear his review of it. I'm sure Ringo loves it, as he loved anything George did.

Exactly. He would have absolutely no reason to and probably absolutely no desire to. Why encourage another round of Paul-bashing on a subject that's totally speculative anyway? http://www.beatlelinks.net/ubb/smilies/images/icons/smile.gif

You're not alone anymore. Can't hurt to have a little joke out here.

And Rellevart, impo this is far away from bashing. I even know that ABCKO did not have that intention.

Can't hurt to have a little joke out here. I remember some remarks about John and George having a discussion 'up there' about Paul's solo albums.

btw. The only thing Paul did on a Harrison album, was the backing vocals on All Those Years Ago.

You can see obvious tension between Paul and George in the anthology videos....the minute Paul opens his mouth!

Oh yes, personally I believe they loved eachother as brothers, it just didn't match anymore on the musical side for a number of years.

Ever seen the video of Blue Moon Of Kentucky, this Anthology recording? There is a topic about it here in Crackerbox Palace. Never seen George so bored.

http://www.beatlelinks.net/ubb/smilies/laugh2.gif True!

How about in the Anthology where Paul is speaking and George starts to play uke over him? http://www.beatlelinks.net/ubb/smilies/wink1.gif

But, yeah, like brothers, they did love one another, no doubt. Remember George said now they realize they're both pretty cute!

Paul did say George was beautiful and he described him in loving, fraternal terms. In the "Anthology," Paul admits that he was driven during their later recording sessions which had a negative impact on all involved.

Still, I agree with 'Kat on this one.

I had a huge laugh about it when I read it, but more regarding the description than the name of Paul.

Im sure George would find that very funny, and im even more sure he would have said it!! Seriously, Paul already stated earlier this year, he would love and be honoured to appear on the album, and he hasnt been asked..though George loved him, they had major differences, and George had good reason to feel a little resentful..Paul continued to say very unkind things about him, well after the Anthology even..Anyway, one just needs to look at the new covers for "Back in the U.S" and "Brainwashed" to see their differences..anyway, theyre both great, its just one felt threatened by anothers greatness - the dark horse running on the dark race course!!

I question this assertion. I don't think I've ever heard Paul say any "very unkind" things about George. I don't doubt that he may have thought them, but he's usually way more diplomatic in public than to say them. Don't think we should avoid discussions like this, just about the way we THINK they felt, just without the thought of Bashing, but just looking at facts and thoughts.

Must say I quite agree on what Yogi sais.

I repeat again, the fact that Paul never got involved in any Harrison solo song, (and also visa versa) other than the ooh's on that one song, sais enough. Look at Anthology and you can feel a sort of tension, it's good for a long time but don't over-do it.

A lot of people love one another but avoid working together, a lot of them are married to eachother.

I know that there was tension between the two men and that they have very different ways of working and thinking and haven't been involved in each other's solo careers (which is probably for the best for BOTH of them!) to any great extent.

But quite honestly, I've heard George say a lot more nasty and snide things about Paul than I have the other way around, so I don't think it's quite fair to make it out like George is the saint and Paul's some nasty dude out to insult him and be threatened by him. I don't think it's that way at all. They're both just men who sometimes loved each other and sometimes were annoyed by each other.

It's Paul teams against George teams here right?

OK, I don't know of what Yogi wrote, but I do know Yogi is always well informed.

What I know is indeed, a long way back, round 1970, George really had it with Paul, however not being the only one. But from what I have been able to follow -which is quite a lot - I haven't seen rude remarks from George towards Paul, maybe some cynical things, but no more.

After reading all the posts I got the
humor. Seriously though, Paul and George
did have closure at the end and enjoyed each
other's company at the hospital. I also was
very moved by Paul's tribute quotes about
George, and the fact that he appeared and
will be appearing at the Harrison tribute
concerts. However, Brainwashed gets my vote
any day, and I am glad Dhani and Jeff Lynne
worked together to finish it. Paul's
recent music just isn't as spiritual or
topical as George's. My favorite Beatle is
George because I prefer lyrical depth, al-
though I've heard great things from Paul too!

Pauls music has never been as spiritual and topical as George and in my opinion this is because George matured into a much better songwriter and had a lot more interesting things to say.

Y'know what's really funny about this? On another board I'm on, everyone is complaining endlessly about how much they hate Jeff Lynne's production and how they think HE is going to ruin the album! Too funny..... http://www.beatlelinks.net/ubb/smilies/images/icons/smile.gif

It really sounds like Jeff tried to keep the music sounding like George's. I think he tried to anyway.

I don't really think that Cloud Nine doesn't sound like George. I mean, it's not ELO, but it has Jeff's influence. I won't be surprised to hear a bit of that on Brainwashed.

It's ridiculous to think that you wouldn't hear something. I mean, if Paul & George worked together, you'd hear Paul & George coming through. It would probably come across as something similar to the Beatles.

Well, I guess I'm just trying to say that everybody has their own style & so if two people work together, it's going to reflect a bit of each one of them.

One thing we may not be familiar with yet, (& we must remember that this will influence the sound of Brainwashed, too) is Dhani's style!

Still anxious to hear this one!

Cloud Nine is the only solo George album that I have, and I LOVE it! If Brainwashed is anything like it, I will not hesitate to buy it.

Here is a quote from John in 1980.

E.L.O. is son of "I Am The Walrus" If somebody wants "I Am The Walrus" music, they just have to buy E.L.O. records. Different schools of "Son of Beatles" exist continually.

I think I can imagine what George was after when he told Jeff he wanted a demo kind of sound, not much production. Then, Jeff apologetically says that the songs deserved more than that. I think, God bless Jeff (and of course Dhani), I am sure they did a wonderful job. Still, I would like to also hear it "demo style" as George had intended...

I didnt mean to start any paul bashing or anything, but to me, from 1969 onwards (even earlier), Paul and John always seemed very jealous, insecure and felt threatened by George and his talent. Probably because the quiet one emerged from behind the stagelights and ran away with the greatest sucsess ( the songs on Abbey Rd, ATMP etc) and there was major embarrasment all round, when he released those 2 on abbey Rd and the triple set, as the whole time they had been limiting him to 2 songs per album Max(1 on pepper, infact rejecting 'only a northern song'), while insisting on recording "Maxwell's silver hammer" and "Revolution 9" or something.. some like George Martin still havent come to terms with it. Only Ringo seems not to have felt threatened ( John felt he was owed credit in I Me Mine!) its evident On Early 1970 where Ringo sings about his relationship with all 3. He wonders whether Paul and John will appear with him but George is "always here playing with me.." Anyway, the paul comments are so frequent, i couldnt possibly name them all, but the worst i ever heard was an interview in 96 where Paul proceeded to say how glad he was he "made it up with john", and how he would hate to be in George's position etc..saying "at least i made it up with him in time" and saying how there was ill will between george and John..despite the fact John said he would have "1 George over 3 pauls any day". It just reeks of insecurity..but the important thing is, after 1970 George moved on with his life, he reacted to all the deception and betrayl with suitable levels of cynicism, and music, many times (Run of the Mill etc) The new albums just show 2 totally different people, one who has made his career of late relying and thriving on Patriotism, and one who warns of the dangers of it..And Paul has never been one for diplomacy! just look at the Yoko situation..Undoubtedly, both paul and george are great, I love Paul too, but any serious look into the history and songs reveals a side to him, that is certainly not his best, same as all of us no doubt..

"Scan a friend not with a microscope glass, you know his foibles, let them pass.."

hope that answers it a bit better..

Paul is still good in my book..he has given much more good than bad, and i am very greatful to him on many levels...

I remind you all that although they had different styles,Paul usually(I would say always)did a wonderful job on George's songs, playing bass, piano, organ and/or singing backing vocals whereas, except on For You Blue,John's contribution from 1968 onward was null. It's a situation in which you can't defend one of our boys without criticize another.I think we can't put the blame of the break up and everything that happened after it, just on one individual. All of them, except Ringo had they share of responsability, including George, although I admit that when he was in The Beatles had to be hard for him to endure Paul and John attitude. With respect to Paul's quote what he said is exactly the same that biographers has written about relationship between John and George in the seventies.Recently has been proved that John's heroin addiction and negative criticism towards George's songs was responsible for many of the troubles that led to the break up as much as Paul's authoritarianism.Another thing I want to say is that at least George and Paul were able to put aside their diferences occasionally and play together on "stage" one more time on 1979 on a party Eric Clapton and Pattie Boyd gave after their marriage. Obviously they didn't that for money, just for fun.

I don't think it's that way at all. They're both just men who sometimes loved each other and sometimes were annoyed by each other.

A few IMO points:
Of course we can only speculate on their relationship from what they say publicly and in interviews Paul is more likely to watch what he says and he seems to put more consideration into "how will it sound if i say it this way". something tells me he learned a thing or two having dealt with the press for ~40 years. George on the other hand has been described as having "a sometimes painful honesty", as Tom Petty put it. He would be more likely than Paul to say something that sounded "nasty and snide" when speaking to the press. I'm not defending or bashing either of them but this is just my personal observation.
I think we all have relationships like this. We could name several things we don't like about someone- and yet we still love 'em (usually a family member). It doesn't mean there is a right side or a bad side- it just means there exists a difference in opinion and taste. These differences within the Beatles is a major part of what made them so great! without differences maybe they would've just been... The Monkees...? http://www.beatlelinks.net/ubb/smilies/eyepoke.gif
I end my post with something (I find funny) that George said during his Yahoo!Chat in February of 2001:
Question-"Does Paul still piss you off (tell us the truth)"
Answer-"'Scan not a friend with a microscopic glass -- You know his faults -- Then let his foibles pass.' Old Victorian Proverb. I'm sure there's enough about me that pisses him off, but i think we have now grown old enough to realize...
that we're both pretty damn cute!"

Personaly I think that says it all. http://www.beatlelinks.net/ubb/smilies/cool1.gif Plus, I happen to very much agree with the "we're both pretty damn cute" bit.
