View Full Version : "No Matter Who You Vote for, the Government Always Gets In"

Here's a quote from George, from VH1 interview (Thanks, Maharishi!!!):

"I think there was a general election going on, and as far as im
concerned, whichever you know..Neil Innes, you know from the Rutles, he
wrote a song once, and said no matter who you vote for, the Government
always gets in. And its like that, you know in England, you always get as
far as i was concerned, the left the right, theyre all really the same.
They're all different shades of the same greyness. And although it was a long
shot, Maharishi tried to get these people together, formed into a party
which would be called the Natural law Party."

George, you know spent quite a bit of time and money to support the NLP. He did a concert in England in 1992 to benefit them (the other two fabs also nearly joined him for a Threetles reunion!...So, NLP also had their support as well!). Who is this group that caught the political thumbs-up of our boys? This thread is to share info and thoughts about NLP. I have many articles to share, also. Some think NLP is wacky, but I'll post them anyway because if you can ignore their bias, the articles provide much info. The NLP has disbanded in England, to my knowledge, but is alive & well in the U.S.
So, without further adieu~~~ http://www.beatlelinks.net/ubb/smilies/images/icons/smile.gif

Sipping tea with George Harrison
By CNN's Mark Davies

LONDON, England (CNN) -- George Harrison sat back in his chair, wearing a revolting purple shirt, sipped tea and put the world to rights.

Politicians were no good. It was time for a change, he drawled. Let's give the other guys a chance.

It was 1992 and we were in a small room at a film studio near London. George had agreed to a few interviews so he could add his voice to the UK's general election campaign of that year.

He wanted us all to support a fringe group called the Natural Law Party (NLP).

A group of earnest men in sober suits -- some of the NLP's candidates -- milled around. Their campaign centred on the teachings of one-time Beatles guru Maharishi Mahesh Yogi. They promoted things like "yogic flying." They had no chance of even the smallest victory in the upcoming poll.

But they had George.

No matter that the party was seen by most as eccentric at best and by many as downright loopy. They had George.

~ MARK WINTER ARCHIVES ~

ARCHIVE for Wednesday 19th December 2001 - Modern Guru Guide
For more than 35 years, transcendental meditation was another key which unlocked George Harrison's spiritual side. Harrison first met the founder of TM, Maharishi Mahesh Yogi, with The Beatles in Wales in 1967. It was the peak of 'hippiedom' when they later followed the Maharishi to India. Although the rest of the band's enthusiasm faded, George's interest never wavered and he practised TM throughout his life. Indeed, when the Natural Law Party asked Harrison for help in 1992 he agreed on the spot, cancelling a trip to Hawaii in order to play an Albert Hall concert for the political party which promotes TM. Fundamentally, TM is a practical way to get in touch with your deeper self based on the internal repetition of a mantra or word, twice a day for 15 to 20 minutes. Jonathan Hinde, a spokesman for the TM movement, says: "You can even practise it on the train to work. People will just think you are having a quiet doze." "The Maharishi is not interested in promoting his own personal details." Hinde explains. "His main aim is to promote Vedic Knowledge which embraces healthcare, architecture, urban planning, as well as yoga and meditation." It is these principles that the Natural Law Party has taken to the polls with some success in the USA and Caribbean countries. Hinde adds: "TM is the core ingredient of these ancient Indian teachings. It stands alone and there are no requirements at all to practise it. It can simply be a great antidote to the stresses and strains of modern life." American studies indicate that TM is as effective as prescribed drugs in the treatment of hypertension - with none of the side-effects of medication. The Maharishi is now nearly 90. He continues his global teaching mission via satellite broadcasts. Since the early fanfare of the Beatles publicity, the Maharishi's message has spread to 85 countries. He runs his own university in Iowa. His more adept students also do 'yogic flying' in which they bounce about on thick mattresses in the full lotus position. There are now 80 centres in the UK promoting TM. Getting involved in TM
If you are interested in TM, call (UK only) 0870 5143733 - or visit www.t-m.org.uk. (http://www.t-m.org.uk.) After an introductory talk, there are four two-hour sessions held on consecutive days. The first session is a private meeting with an instructor. Later sessions are with a small group. Students are recommended to stay in touch with their instructor over the next few months. Courses cost £500. Mark Winter

psychoceramics: One World Gov't

To: psychoceramics@zikzak.net
Subject: psychoceramics: One World Gov't
Peter Hipwell writes: I never heard about the World Government party. Although the Natural Law Party, funded by George Harrison's (among others) money, put up a candidate in every constituency in the last general election. They are a transcendental meditation, levitation, and cosmic harmony sort of a group.>>Cheers,>Pete.>

The NLP is another offshoot of the Guru Maharaj Ji and theTranscendental Meditation movement, so beloved of The Beatles. Someyears ago he set up a "university" for the study of Natural Law that, amongst other things, aimed to show that when only "the square root ofone percent" of the population practice TM there is a perceptable improvement in the quality of life for all. Did anyone ever mention that the square root of one percent is ten percent? The NLP has attracted such luminaries as Doug Hennings (sp?), a formerstage magician, and seems to have awarded a doctorate in Natural Law to all its parliamentary candidates. One of the Natural Law highlights used to be its application to cutting expensive government programmes: for example, by the application of Natural Law we would supposedly be able to defend our country by preventing our enemies being born.About fifteen years back the NLP (or whatever they were called then) hada two-page advert in the "New Scientist" magazine that made all these wonderful claims. They followed up by adverts in the Financial Times(about five years back, I think). I wish I'd kept copies!-- Carl Moss

There are a couple great books by Maharishi, which I need to get around to ordering..hehe...They have so much info that I believe is the basis for a lot of NLP's philosophy.

It's just so amazing...politics usually leaves me feeling hopeless and cynical (!!), and NLP is a real option! After all, we lost Jerry Brown here to Oakland (boooo)...no, just kidding. Oakland needs him, too! http://www.beatlelinks.net/ubb/smilies/images/icons/smile.gif

Sure! Thank you for the George interview! http://www.beatlelinks.net/ubb/smilies/images/icons/smile.gif

By the way, here in the US it is the last day for voter registration. Anyone wanting to register under NLP (or change their party affiliation!), this is the last day! Of course, those registered another way can still vote NLP, but with small parties it helps them to register under them. There needs to be so many registered voters under the NLP for them to secure a place on the ballots in November. I think we've got it, but just in case... http://www.beatlelinks.net/ubb/smilies/images/icons/smile.gif ....you can go to any post office I believe.

Here is a bit more from the VH1 interview~

"Fugelsang: the same Maharishi Mahesh Yogi?

GEORGE: Maharish Mahesh Yogi. the idea behind it really, is to have
conciousness as the basic thing, because if really we get in government, or
we get in any situation in life, we get the reflection of our own
conciousness. We cant really complain about what we have , because that is
us, its a reflection of our own being. Now if we could have people who were
actually concious in a spiritual sense, all the underlying problems to
society, i mean it wouldnt be able to just change overnight, but over a
generation or 2 generations..."

A little pricey, huh? http://www.beatlelinks.net/ubb/smilies/images/icons/wink.gif I think since you are Maharishi you should be cut in!

It's not unheard of, unfortunately, for these pricey prices for yoga and meditation courses. Like check out Yoga Journal's different retreats and stuff. Some of it may be rental of the places, materials, etc...where the cost is shared by few instead of many. His books can run upwards to $60! But I know that if it is from a small press (I didn't check), that is actually not too bad. One series I collect on Women's Issues in India comes from a small press. Each book can cost nearly $100! Looking at it, it seems it should cost maybe $15! But see, it's small press, so you pay for the printing costs in this occasion, etc.

And ultimately, there is always SRF for meditation courses! There the cost is a stamp!!! Well, you can't beat Yoganandaji on many levels!! http://www.beatlelinks.net/ubb/smilies/images/icons/smile.gif Om Guru!!

Here is more from George on the NLP~

"GEORGE: The Natural Law that operates on this planet, or in the
universe..everything works in a perfect order, and theres a scheme to things
which has a certain intelligence that drives it and makes everything work.
Now if we, as individuals could go to that level of conciousness, we can
bring it into our being. As Maharishi Mahesh Yogi says, for a forest to be
green, each tree must be green. So its no use, just 1 or 2 people being like
this, youd have to make the whole of society, if they had this
understanding, and thats what i think really youd have to school people,
right from being children, teach them about their bodies, about conciousness
(stresses conciousness), because its all to do with conciousness. Raise the
level of conciousness, and then everything automatically becomes better.

Fuelgesang: Do you think it can happen, or are people on auto pilot to much?

GEORGE It can happen, but its something that will take a long, long time, generations of people. i mean, if you look now,
just say from the 50's, or the 60's, theres alot of people, thanks to
indian music, thanks to rock in roll music, who have got much more
understanding. You go out on the street now, you can find indian spice
shops, indian restuarants, and places to go for Yoga, meditation, theres a
much higher awareness, (pause) generally, on those kind of things. So it is
seeping through. I mean, where did all the really good hippies go, when they
all dropped out?

Fuegelsang: Theyre all driving Volvo's George..

GEORGE: Well, i dont think all of them are. I think a lot of them have
brought up, there are probably 2 generations of kids now who are much more
open to that type of conciousness, and they've been brought up by being
Vegetarian or whatever, that helps the society become much more balanced.
Its all to do with the balance, there's too much extreme going on".

Thanks again to (our own) Maharishi for typing this all out!!! http://www.beatlelinks.net/ubb/smilies/images/icons/smile.gif
Notice again how George stresses vegetarianism as a main goal. This may be the reflection of Prabhupad's influence, in particular. Prabhupad has said that even if you do not have the inclination to chant or anything along those lines, at least become a veggie. This way you are open to a higher birth next time around. So, interesting to see George stresses this in particular again. "Eating cows with such persistence...doesn't offer much resistence" again~ God bless him, always helping us along in so many ways!
