McCartney, Starr Lead Harrison Tribute Concert

Paul McCartney and Ringo Starr will make a rare appearance together as part of a London concert commemorating the one-year anniversary of the death of Beatles guitarist George Harrison. The event, set for Nov. 29 at Royal Albert Hall, was planned by Harrison's widow Olivia and guitarist Eric Clapton, who will supervise the show's musical content. Tickets go on sale Oct. 11.

Other artists confirmed to perform include Tom Petty, Ravi Shankar, Jeff Lynne, Jim Keltner, Jools Holland, Leon Russell, and various members of Monty Python's Flying Circus. According to organizers, the show will feature Harrison's music, "as well as music he loved."

"The tribute for George will resound not only within the Albert Hall but hopefully reach the spirit of the man so loved by his friends who will be performing and attending," Olivia Harrison said in a statement. Proceeds will benefit Harrison's the Material World Charitable Foundation, which funds music, education, and art programs for people with special needs.

As previously reported, Harrison's final album, "Brainwashed," is due Nov. 19 via Dark Horse/EMI. The set was produced by the artist with his son Dhani and Lynne. Among the guests who appear are Lynne, Keltner, and Holland.

Ian don't do that, because they made it clear to me on the phone that they will not sell tickets to anyone in person from the Box Office and they will only sell them over the phone which I think is pretty crap but there you go.

Thanks for that Sally. I found out today that they would not be selling over the counter, but I promise you it was only by chance that I phoned. It was only by a nose hair that I didn't buy my bus ticket and fill my hip flask. Thanks for telling me, anyway. I now have to tell the other people I know who were planning on a stopover.

This is an EC site, which contradicts above reports, saying tickets will *only* be on sale at the box office? I imagine this is mistaken (?), but may be a heads-up to double and triple check for those of you in England. www.xs4all.nl/~slowhand/news/09222002.htm (http://www.xs4all.nl/~slowhand/news/09222002.htm)

"Proceeds from the concert will go to the Material World Charitable Foundation. Tickets go on sale Oct. 11 at the Royal Albert Hall and online."

VH1 has an interview with Tom Petty, where he speaks about amongst others the Beatles.
http://www.vh1.com/artists/news/1458222/10182002/petty_tom.jhtml

VH1: You’re playing the upcoming George Harrison tribute concert. What are you going to do?

Petty: Everybody is doing George songs. My understanding of it is that this is music that George would want to hear. Actually, he probably wouldn’t want to hear his songs, but that’s what we’re going to do. I think there’s going to be some Indian music and some ukulele music and the Voices of Bulgaria. These are things that he really loved. I’ve had two conversations with Eric Clapton that were very brief so far and Eric had written down some suggestions for me. I’m going to look at them and see which one comes out best. He asked me to sing “Isn’t It a Pity,” “Taxman” or “If I Needed Someone.” They’d also like to do a Wilburys number. So maybe we’ll do that. The song that George always played when he was hanging around my house is a kind of obscure one from the second Wilburys album called “If You Belonged to Me.” He used to play that on the ukulele a lot. I think I’m gonna play that. That reminds me of George.

Tom Petty is touring tight now and this week he has performed Isn't It A Pity which he likely also will play in London on the 29th.

Mike Campbell does the slide parts and what we have been able to hear from him, he is not bad at it at all.

There is some warning at Abbey Road's newspage about some fake last-minute tickets being sold from the US for the concert.

Charity ticket touts cash in on ex-Beatle Nov 25 2002

By Kevin Core Daily Post Correspondent

TOUTS are exploiting a charity tribute concert to the late George Harrison by selling tickets at massively inflated prices.
Friday's concert at the Royal Albert Hall reunites surviving Beatles Sir Paul McCartney and Ringo Starr in aid of Harrison's Material World Charitable Foundation.

In one instance, a pair of stalls tickets with a face value of £150 each were sold on an internet auction site for £1,550.

Tickets for the event sold out within hours, and it is feared that many of them were bought by money-grubbing touts, not music fans. George's widow, Olivia Harrison, expressed sadness that the celebration had been hijacked.

She said: "I am extremely disappointed to discover that some people have bought tickets for the tribute concert only so that they can sell them on for a profit.

"This completely goes against the spirit in which this celebration was conceived.

"I only hope that the people who intend to sell these tickets on will donate the profits to our charity or to another charity."

The touts are eyeing huge profits for themselves, instead of George's foundation for the arts and those with special needs.

Friday's concert marks the first anniversary of the ex-Beatle's death from cancer. He was 58.

Paul and Ringo will be joined by a phenomenal cast of Harrison's friends, including Eric Clapton, Ravi Shankar and Jools Holland.
------------------

I feel sorry for all the fans that could not get a ticket because of those sharks.

This is completely disgusting, but I'm not surprised at all. This is exactly the kind of mindlessness and corruption that George sang about over and over...it's sad, but I don't believe this world will ever change.

It is terrible that people can get away with doing something like this, but not a surprise. What really makes it worse is the fact that it is a charity event. These people have absolutely no respect.
