View Full Version : Ukuleles - A tribute to George

At the Paul concert last night, Paul did a tribute to George. He started off by saying that George loved Ukuleles and owned several. He even gave one to Paul...in turn, Paul played that ukulele while he sang his version of "Something". It was very cool with all of the George pictures on the screens and everything. A very nice tribute. http://www.beatlelinks.net/ubb/smilies/images/icons/smile.gif

Same thing when he played Toronto last April.

Weird coincidence though, both when Paul did "something" and "Here today"... I had something caught in my eyes and I could not help but rubb them throughout both songs...
http://www.beatlelinks.net/ubb/smilies/wink2.gif

Two things...

The George pictues during "Something", why end with a shot of the back of George's head. A "funny" picture, or one of George with Paul would have been more appropriate.

Why no pictures of John diring "Here today" ?

I think (but I'm not positive) that Yoko has the copyrights on many of John's images. I wouldn't be surprised if that's why there weren't any pictures. I know Yoko and Paul do not really get along.

Also, I thinking that Paul may have wanted people to pay attention to the lyrics, rather than the photos. People already know "Something", but not many people know "Here Today".

I know what you mean about the head shot of George. It could have been symbolic of him passing away, but I'm not sure Paul would do that.

Anyway, those two songs were my favorite part of the concert. http://www.beatlelinks.net/ubb/smilies/images/icons/smile.gif

My uke is back there in CA somewhere. It was my mom's when she was young & I played it back in my teens & 20s! Now, we can't find it although we know it's around somewhere. I've decided I'll just get a new one in HI next time I go. I miss having one!

Yes, the Fromby conventions! hehehe~ well, not yet!!

I wanted to mention that when I got my Uke, I also found this wonderful book! I got it home, opened it up, and found words from George!!! Yippie!! It's a letter to the author about how everyone needs to own & play a ukulele. The letter is in George's own handwriting, signed with love and an om, a cross, and his Hawaiian name, I think it is! (not sure!)
Here is the link...and while you are ordering the book, order a Uke as well! Then we can all play along together in spirit and figure out the entire George catalogue!!!! www.ws123.com/ssl/flea/shopping/more.asp?ProductCode=FMM-B-105 (http://www.ws123.com/ssl/flea/shopping/more.asp?ProductCode=FMM-B-105)

Happy shopping!! http://www.beatlelinks.net/ubb/smilies/images/icons/smile.gif

Oh, also, the site has a message board. Type in George's name and see how loved he is!!! There was even a George Uke-In in Central Park last May!

MEANING OF LIFE FOUND IN HIS UKULELE -- by Janette Williams

MUSIC

Ukulele killed by rock music, Whitcomb says.

ALTADENA -- To Ian Whitcomb, the ukulele can provide answers to all life’s mysteries, from the vibrating string theory of the universe to "Where Did Robinson Crusoe Go with Friday on Saturday Night?"

Now with "Ukulele Heaven," his new book and CD just out and his ukulele-themed movie "Stanley’s Gig," starring Faye Dunaway, headed for the Taos Talking Picture Film Festival, Whitcomb says the vintage fourstringed instrument’s time has come again.

"For the last few years there have been a few people proselytizing and it’s coming back as a serious instrument," said Whitcomb, 59, whose CD, "Titanic -- Music As Heard on the Fateful Voyage" won a Grammy Award in 1998.

"George Harrison loves the uke, and I’m told he’s a fan of mine and has been collecting my records for years. Jimmy Buffett just bought a uke -- it’s become hip again ...and they say the universe is based on strings vibrating in harmony, and that’s embodied in the ukulele."

There's more to the article here~~~ (the above was the only George mention)

Very special indeed, and Paul pratically plays it only on one chord...

At any rate, a very poignant moment in the gig...

I'm sure that despite all of their legal & personal issues, that Paul and George cared a lot for each other.

I'll never forget, a few years back, when Liam Gallagher (Oasis) was asked if he would consider doing a song with Paul. Liam replied that he would never do a song with a "has been" like Paul (not sure of his exact words but it was something along those lines).

Not long after, when asked about Oasis, George said that they might be better off without Liam, as his brother was the one who wrote the good songs.

Now, the two comments may not be related but I still like to think that the old Beatle pride kicked in and that George was (sort of) sticking out for Paul.

Well said,

I also believe that despite their differences on e.g. the musical side, there was a lot of love and understanding left between them.

It sure does! In the book I mentioned above, "Jumpin' Jim's '60's Uke-In"~ there is the uke version of "Something"! It's not too hard to play, whereas "Here Comes the Sun" is very hard (for me anyway!)! In the beginning of the book, the author speaks of his afternoon jam with George. They played many songs together, including those of Fromby, Elvis, Otis Redding (he includes the "Sittin' on the Dock of the Bay"~ one of my fave's & fun to play!), and Joni Mitchell! They also did "Something" together, so I assume this version is the Jim/George arrangement!

I quote from George's own words...
"Everyone should have and play the 'uke'..."

So, now, everyone do what George says! http://www.beatlelinks.net/ubb/smilies/images/icons/wink.gif And then we'll be learning together!!! http://www.beatlelinks.net/ubb/smilies/images/icons/smile.gif

In fact it is only 3 chords being used mainly, + the Badge. I studied on this song some time long ago and can play it easily. So when you give me the Blue Jay Way tour, we'll play it together.
