View Full Version : Eating Cows with Such Persistence...

Doesn't offer much resistence....

Why is the cow considered sacred in Hinduism? For much the same reason sheep are associated with Jesus!

Indian Cows: Blessed Bovines!
As the sheep is to Christianity, the cow is to Hinduism. Lord Krishna was a cowherd, and the bull is depicted as the vehicle of Lord Shiva. Today the cow has almost become a symbol of Hinduism. Cows, Cows Everywhere!
India has 30 per cent of the world's cattle. There are 26 distinctive breeds of cow in India. The hump, long ears and bushy tail distinguish the Indian cow.

Here cows are everywhere! Because the cow is respected as a sacred animal, it's allowed to roam unharmed, and they are pretty used to the traffic and the rhythm of the city. So, you can see them roaming the streets in towns and cities, grazing unmindfully on the roadside grass verges and munching away vegetables thrown out by street sellers. Stray and homeless cows are also supported by temples, especially in southern India.

Conserve the Cow
As opposed to the West, where the cow is widely considered as nothing better than walking hamburgers, in India, the cow is believed to be a symbol of the earth - because it gives so much yet asks nothing in return.

Because of its great economic importance, it makes good sense to protect the cow. It is said Mahatma Gandhi became a vegetarian because he felt cows were ill-treated. Such is the respect for the cow, notes scholar Jeaneane Fowler, that Indians had offered to take in millions of cows waiting for slaughter in Britain as a result of the crisis in beef production in 1996.

Cow Worship
Though the cow is held sacred to the Hindus, it is not exactly worshipped as a deity by all. On the 12th day of the 12th month of the Hindu calendar, a cow ritual is performed in Jodhpur palace. Bull Temples
Nandi Bull, the vehicle of Lord Shiva is considered the symbol of respect for all male cattle. The Nandi Bull holy site at Madurai and the Shiva temple at Mahabalipuram are the most venerated bovine shrines. Even non-Hindus are allowed to enter the the 16th century Bull Temple in Bangalore. The Vishwanath Temple of Jhansi, believed to have been built in 1002, also has a large statue of the Nandi Bull. History
The cow was venerated as the mother goddess in the early Mediterranean civilizations. The cow became important in India, first in the Vedic period (1500 - 900 BCE), but only as a symbol of wealth. For the Vedic man cows were 'the "real life" substratum of the goods of life', writes JC Heesterman in The Encyclopedia Of Religion, vol. 5.Symbol of Sacrifice
Cows form the core of religious sacrifices, for without ghee or butter, which is produced from cow's milk, no sacrifice can be performed. In the Mahabharata, we have Bhishma saying: "Cows represent sacrifice. Without them, there can be no sacrifice…Cows are guileless in their behaviour and from them flow sacrifices…and milk and curds and butter. Hence cows are sacred..." Bhishma also observes that the cow acts as a surrogate mother by providing milk to human beings for the whole life. So the cow is truly the mother of the world.

Cows As Gifts
Of all gifts, the cow is still considered the highest in rural India. The Puranas have it that there is no gift more sacred than the gift of cows. "There is no gift that produces more blessed merit." Lord Rama was given a dowry of thousands of cows and bullocks when he married Sita.

No Beef Please!
Since the cow is thought to be God's useful gift to mankind, consuming beef or veal is considered sacrilegious for Hindus. Selling beef is banned in many Indian cities, and few Hindus would be ready to even taste cattle meat, for socio-cultural reasons.

Veal : A Cruel Meal

A calf lies dead in the slatted stall in which it stood for all of its life, with no mother, sunlight or decent food. This is the fate of a calf raised for veal

The veal calf industry is one of the most reprehensible of all the kinds of intensive animal agriculture. Veal calves are a by-product of the dairy industry; they are "manufactured" by "milk machines" - dairy cows. Female calves are raised to be dairy cows: They are confined and fed synthetic hormones to increase growth and production and antibiotics to keep them alive in their unhealthy, unnatural environments. They are artificially inseminated and, after giving birth, are milked for several years until their production levels drop, then they are slaughtered.
Male calves are taken from their mothers shortly after birth. Some are slaughtered soon after birth for "bob veal." Others are raised in "open pens," a kind of minimum security prison, and even then they are sometimes chained. Most are destined for the veal crate.

Solitary Confinement
The veal crate is a wooden restraining device that is the veal calf's permanent home. It is so small (22" x 54") that the calves cannot turn around or even lie down and stretch and is the ultimate in high-profit, confinement animal agriculture.(1) Designed to prevent movement (exercise), the crate does its job of atrophying the calves' muscles, thus producing tender "gourmet" veal.

"Feeding" Time
The calves are generally fed a milk substitute intentionally lacking in iron and other essential nutrients. This diet keeps the animals anemic and creates the pale pink or white color desired in the finished product. Craving iron, the calves lick urine-saturated slats and any metallic parts of their stalls. Farmers also withhold water from the animals, who, always thirsty, are driven to drink a large quantity of the high-fat liquid feed.
Because of such extremely unhealthy living conditions and restricted diets, calves are susceptible to a long list of diseases, including chronic pneumonia and "scours," or constant diarrhea. Consequently, they must be given massive doses of antibiotics and other drugs just to keep them alive. (The antibiotics are passed on to consumers in the meat.) The calves often suffer from wounds caused by the constant rubbing against the crates.

A Fate Worse Than Death
About 14 weeks after their birth, the calves are slaughtered. The quality of this "food," laden with chemicals, lacking in fiber and other nutrients, diseased and processed, is another matter. The real issue is the calves' experience. During their brief lives, they never see the sun or touch the Earth. They never see or taste the grass. Their anemic bodies crave proper sustenance. Their muscles ache for freedom and exercise. They long for maternal care. They are kept in darkness except to be fed two to three times a day for 20 minutes. The calves have committed no crime, yet have been sentenced to a fate comparable to any Nazi concentration camp.

What You Can Do
To help stop veal calf abuses, don't buy or eat veal, and tell friends, relatives, and neighbors why. Tell restaurant managers about veal cruelties and ask them to remove veal from their menus. Also, don't buy or eat dairy products, because of the dairy industry's role in veal production. Ask your state legislators to sponsor bills that would prohibit the use of veal crates.

its time to put a stop to all this cockamamie buisness that is animal slaughter, dont you reckon HC?? Thanks for posting this..George was a good friend of the cows, and all animals in general...Cows also have that dual relationship with humans..its a shame how animals are treated by supposedly "intelligent" and even "God fearing" humans.. "so-called Hindus" included..there is a big leather trade in India, which is absoluetly disgusting, i saw it on a PETA video..its also highly illegal, as cow slaughter is illegal in India...And anyone know why Paul never released :"one of these days"? id love to hear that..

"then i tell you that we'll all be looking for changes,in the way we treat our fellow creatures..and we will learn how to grow..when we're Looking for changes"

Yes, it really is time we all stopped. I always think of the story (from Hunter Davis?) how George, when he was little, didn't even like to swat a fly. See, even aa a child, what a gentle fellow...from a previous life, no doubt...I heard a little about the leather trade in India~ so sad. There is an ISKCON link, I'll try to find it. They say they are importing cows for milk and kill them instead...some such. http://www.beatlelinks.net/ubb/smilies/images/icons/frown.gif

But this is nice...this person sends out free copies of a CD called "Meet Your Meat", asking others to burn copies and pass them out. Here is her link, she is in New Zealand~

She does it all for free, with love for Krishna!!

Oh, and Paul's song...is on "McCartney 2". It's really beautiful!! I will find the lyrics for you!! http://www.beatlelinks.net/ubb/smilies/images/icons/smile.gif

One Of These Days

One Of These Days
When My Feet Are On The Ground
I'm Gonna Look Around And See

See What's Right, See What's There
And Breathe Fresh Air, Ever After

One Of These Days
When A Job Just Takes Too Long
I'm Gonna Sing My Song And See

See What's Right, See What's There
And Breathe Fresh Air, Ever After

It's There, It's Round
It's To Be Found
By You, By Me
It's All We Ever Wanted To Be

One Of These Days
When We Both Are At Our Ease
When You've Got Time To Please, Yourself

See What's Right And See What's There
And Breathe Fresh Air, Ever After

It's There, It's Round
It's To Be Found
By You, By Me
It's All We Ever Wanted To See

One Of These Days
When My Feet Are On The Ground
I'm Gonna Look Around And See
See What's Right And See What's There
And Breathe Fresh Air, Ever After, Ever After
Breathe Fresh Air, Ever After
