View Full Version : All Those Years Ago

Doesn't it give you shivers when George sings

"Living with good and bad I always looked up to you."

in this song "All Those Years Ago"?

Or how about the other verse when he's singing:

You had control of our smiles and our tears

The word tears is being sung just like only George can. Sorry that I can't express it well enough in english http://www.beatlelinks.net/ubb/smilies/images/icons/smile.gif

It makes it clear that George truly loved John.

Future is not, may not be at all
Present is, improve the flying hour
Present only is within thy power.

George looked up to John. You could say he looked to John as a big brother. For what they went through in the early days, Hamburg, the tours and all, they grew a sibling bond between them. I'm glad George recorded this song. It's a beautiful tribute.

It's a very touching song. It's one of my favorite of George's songs, but listening to it is very bittersweet (I absolutely choked up the first time I saw the video, on November 30, 2001). It was also a great gesture on George's part to invite Paul and Linda to overdub backing vocals onto his and Ringo's orginal parts.

Along with the lines you already mentioned:

"You were the one who imagined it all, all those years ago"

I think it's certainly a loving tribute to somebody he did look up to!

There are so many great verses in this song.
My favorite is.
" Now in the world of light
Where the spirit free of the lies
and all else that we despised "

You know...I adore this song, and I love that lyric too. But I've always wondered if perhaps there was a double meaning in that lyric. Maybe it's just me, but the idea of someone having control of your smiles and your tears may not, necessarily, be a good thing.

Although it's obvious that George looked up to John, they also had their differences. And although the "smiles and tears" line highlights how important John was to the Beatles, I wonder if there was also a subtle hint of resentment there as well. Or am I reading too much into this? http://www.beatlelinks.net/ubb/smilies/smile1.gif

Of all the Lennon tribute songs, I think George's was the most eloquent and impassioned - hence it getting to #2 in the American charts.

I love this song. I always think of this as a tribute to John AND George. The video has a lot of pictures of John and George together and it makes me sad to see it. Pity I DIDN'T see it until AFTER George died. What a Waste!!

Yeah. I think George looked to John as a big brother, forever trying to get his approval. I do wonder if George might have been a bit jealous of the closeness that John and Paul shared.
Kasey, where did you see this video? Was it on MTV? I've never seen it.

Kasey: Is it possible you could tape that for me? <asking nicely on bended knee http://www.beatlelinks.net/ubb/smilies/images/icons/grin.gif> I'll pay you whatever the cost would be. (The tape, your time, shipping.)
Incidentally, was "I've Got My Mind Set On You" on it? Giggling as I'm thinking of the funny version. I'm pretty sure he made two of them for that song.

Hehehe~ this reminds me of the interview where they mention John saying this, too, and George responds, "Well, that's what *he* thinks..." http://www.beatlelinks.net/ubb/smilies/wink1.gif

They showed it on both MTV and VH-1 the weekend George died. I taped whatever they showed and among the treasures that I got are "When We Was Fab", "This Is Love", "This Song","Crackerbox Palace" and several Wilbury videos ("End of the Line", Wilbury Twist", "Handle With Care" etc.). The sad thing is that except for "Crackerbox Palace" and "Handle With Care", I haven't seen any of the other videos until George died. What a shame. I taped "Blow Away" before George died and it's my special treasure.
Why did George have to die before I could see his videos? What a tragedy!http://www.beatlelinks.net/ubb/smilies/cry4.gif A year later and I'm still angryhttp://www.beatlelinks.net/ubb/smilies/angry5.gif about it.

I like when he sings "...yet you were the one that they said was so weird." It's evocative, for me, of the concept Paul explores in The Fool On The Hill...you know...someone who appears to be foolish (like some think John was for his campaign for PEACE)...but is really & truly...A GENIUS.

I love this song. Oh, my fingers turn to spaghetti when I try to master the chords!!

I seem to remember that was the only one that I ever saw way back when I was a little kiddie in NZ. I saw it playing a few weeks ago when I went into the Baker Street Beatles shop. Heeheeheee it is funny.
I miss George.

There's a lot of George video out there; you just have to know where to look. I bought a fantastic bootleg tape at Beatlefest (not in the approved flea market, of course, but in some guy's hotel room!) that's got virtually all his videos, solo and with the Wilburys. It's wonderful. If I had a 2nd VCR, I'd make copies for all of you! http://www.beatlelinks.net/ubb/smilies/images/icons/smile.gif

Danoota,

I want a copy of Paul at the Superbowl and any other cool Beatle footage you have. How much would you be selling this for?

And thanks!

I don't charge to do this, but all you have to do is send me the blank tape(s) and return postage. Email me. I have Paul in the opening ceremony and also at half time with Terry Bradshaw.
