In celebrating the birth of Lord Krishna, Janmashtami, many will fast until midnight, who (like someone else I know http://www.beatlelinks.net/ubb/smilies/wink1.gif ) was born at midnight.

"At this auspicious time, in the pitch of midnight, Lord Vishnu, who is the resident within the hearts of all creatures, was born of the divinely beautiful Devaki, like the full moon rising in the eastern horizon." ~ Shrimad Bhagavata

Words from George, from Krsna Book~~~

"Everybody is looking for KRISHNA.

Some don't realize that they are, but they are.

KRISHNA is GOD, the Source of all that exists, the Cause of all that is, was, or ever will be.

As GOD is unlimited HE has many Names.

Allah-Buddha-Jehova-Rama: All are KRISHNA, all are ONE.

God is not abstract; He has both the impersonal and the personal aspects to His personality which is SUPREME, ETERNAL, BLISSFUL, and full of KNOWLEDGE. As a single drop of water has the same qualities as an ocean of water, so has our consciousness the qualities of GOD'S consciousness... but through our identification and attachment with material energy (physical body, sense pleasures, material possessions, ego, etc.) our true TRANSCENDENTAL CONSCIOUSNESS has been polluted, and like a dirty mirror it is unable to reflet a pure image.

With many lives our association with the TEMPORARY has grown. This impermanent body, a bag of bones and flesh, is mistaken for our true self, and we have accepted this temporary condition to be final.

Through all ages, great SAINTS have remained as living proof that this non-temporary, permanent state of GOD CONSCIOUSNESS can be revived in all living Souls. Each soul is potentially divine. Krsna says in Bhagavad Gita: "Steady in the Self, being freed from all material contamination, the yogi achieves the highest perfetional stage of happiness in touch with the Supreme Consciousness." (VI,28)

YOGA (a scientific method for GOD (SELF) realization) is the process by which we puirify our consciousness, stop further pollution, and arrive at the state of Perfection, full KNOWLEDGE, full BLISS.

If there's a God, I want to see Him. It's pointless to believe in something without proof, and Krishna Consciousness and meditation are methods where you can actually obtain GOD preception. You can actually see God, and Hear Him, play with Him. It might sound crazy, but He is actually there, actually with you.

There are many yogic Paths--Raja, Jnana, Hatha, Kriya, Karma, Bhakti--which are all acclaimed by the MASTERS of each method.

SWAMI BHAKTIVEDANTA is as his title says, a BHAKTI Yogi following the path of DEVOTION. By serving GOD through each thought, word, and DEED, and by chanting HIS Holy Names, the devotee quickly develops God-consciousness. By chanting

Hare Krishna, Hare Krishna
Krishna Krishna, Hare Hare
Hare Rama, Hare Rama
Rama Rama, Hare Hare

one inevitably arrives at KRISHNA Consciousness. (The proof of the pudding is in the eating!)

I request that you take advantage of this book KRSNA, and enter into its understanding. I also request that you make an appointment to meet your God now, through the self liberating process of YOGA (UNION) and GIVE PEACE A CHANCE.

All you need is Love (Krishna) Hari Bol.

George Harrison 31/3/70"

Nice one.

This is what George writes in I Me Mine about this song;

India and in particular my experiences in Brindaban (Vrindavan) inspired me to write It Is He.
We went to Brindaban where Krishna lived 4000 years ago. It is one of the holiest cities in India - the whole town is Krishna conscious - everyone, everywhere was chanting 'Hare Krishna' and various permutations on that.

It was my most fantastic experience; going to that place was great; Ravi Shankar had arranged somehow that we were to meet Sripad (His Holiness) Maharaj, an ascetic, who spoke some English and who was going to show us around.

We arrived there as it weas becoming dusk and somebody ran off to try and find him. It's all so ancient, all these little streets and old temples. A girl came back and said 'come with us' and we went down to where the river Jamuna used to flow, but now it's changed its course so it's a dry bed. It was an old Goswami (a spiritual master; one who is in full control of his mind ands senses - Swami means 'teacher' and Go means 'the mind and the senses') 's house we went to. We sat there and had tea and then left after dark.

We went off with this man and I didn't know who he was, and we were walking and the more we walked, the more I thought 'God this guy is incredible', everybody was coming up to him, all the time, and touching his feet. He looked like an old beggar; real matted long hair and he wore an old sack robe and had bare feet and all these Swamis with shaved heads and saffron robes were coming and bowing to him and touching his feet.

He took us round to every temple in Brindaban and he was known in all of them. I was a stiff Westener when we started off, but there was a moment when the atmosphere of the place got to me, melting all the bullshit away. I thought about this man a great deal as it became a fantastic, blissful experience for me.

Later, they gave us some rooms and we slept for just a few hours until he came and got us at 4 am to go for the morning Puja (litterally means an offering. It can also mean a temple service as it does here) in the temple. We'd probably only slept for 3 hours but it was the deepest sleep I ever had in my life and all through the sleep I could hear choirs singing. I still don't know to this day - I don't think it was remples I could hear - I think it was something else - all through the sleep I was hearing huge heavenly choirs - it was a fantastic experience.

The next day we went to the garden called Sevakunj famous for Krishna's 'Lila'. Lila is a pastime, a transcendental activity. (maybe you've seen the pictures of all the Gopis (cowherd girl), the girls, and there's a big ring of them and they've all got a Krishna each and are dancing in a circle) Krishna always played there; this was the place where he would hang out and dance.

They close this park at sunset until sunrise and nobody's allowed in there at night. The only people who have been in during that time, it has been said, have gone mad or have been found dead. All the birds and animals leave as soon as it's sunset.

Inside there is a temple with a big brass bed on the altar, and as each of the different temples depicts a different aspect of Krishna, at this one (because he's been up all night dancing with the Gopis and doesn't get up early), they don't open till about 10am for morning Puja. All the trees, which are so ancient, bow down and the branches touch the ground. Just to walk in that place is incredible.

That morning when we came back from the temple at about 5am, it was still dark, and we sat in a room. Sripad started singing a Bhajan ( a devotional song) to which we all sang the answering part, repeating it over and over. I got blissed out with my eyes shut, and didn't want it to stop, even when I felt I was going to stop, we would keep it going on. In the end when it eventually stopped, the sun was so high; it must have been 9 or 10 in the morning - the time had flown by - fantastic.

And so he said to me 'why don't you make that into a song?'
So what I did was take that old chant 'Jai Krishna, Jai Krishna, Krishna, Jai Krishna, Jai Sri Krishna, Jai Radhe, Jai Radhe, Radhe, Jai Radhe, Jai Sri Radhe... and then wrote the English words in between the verses.

It Is He was for Sripad Maharaj, a wonderful, humble, Holy man.

"Chanting Hare Krsna is a type of meditation that can be practiced even if the mind is in turbulence. You can even be doing it and other things at the same time. That's what's so nice. In my life there's been many times the mantra brought things around. It keeps me in tune with reality, and the more you sit in one place and chant, the more incense you offer to Krsna in the same room, the more you purify the vibration, the more you can achieve what you're trying to do, which is just trying to remember God, God, God, God, God, as often as possible. And if you're talking to Him with the mantra, it certainly helps." ~ George

The festival of Krishna Janmashtami is the celebration of Lord Krishna's birthday. Krishna, the eighth incarnation of Lord Vishnu, is an unique character in Hinduism. He was naughty in his childhood days, romantic as a young man, and proved to be a profound philosopher in his adulthood as illustrated by the Bhagvad Gita.

The birthday of Krishna falls on the Astami of Krishna Paksh (the eighth day of the dark fortnight) in the month of Bhado (July-August), eight days after Raksha Bandhan. The exact date of Krishna's birthday has not been determined but is conjectured to be around 1400 B.C. when the Aryans got settled across the Indo-Gangetic plain. It was the rainy season in India and Krishna was born at midnight, in the prison of Kamsa, during the middle of a perilous rain and storm. Thus goes the story of Krishna's birth.

Kamsa, a despot, was then the king of Mathura. He had imprisoned his father in order to become the king. Devaki was his sister and was married to a noble man Vasudeva.

Kamsa one day heard a heavenly voice, saying, "Kamsa, your days of tyranny will soon be over, you will be killed by the eighth child of Devaki."

Kamsa got frightened. He immediately imprisoned Devaki and Vasudeva. He did not want to take any chance and killed at birth each and every child of Devaki, until the time came for the delivery of the eighth child. To feel more secured, Kamsa increased the number of prison guards, kept strict vigilance and put Vasudeva in chains. But God planned otherwise.

At midnight when the eighth child was born, the guards fell fast asleep and Vasudeva's chain fell off his hands and feet. Wasting no time, Vasudeva picked up the newborn baby, and carrying it in a basket, he started towards Gokul. Gokul was a village of cowherds, located across the Yamuna river, where his friend Nanda lived.

It was a dark stormy night with blinding rain continuously pouring from the sky. When Vasudeva reached the river bank of Yamuna, the river was in spate. The wind and storm were blowing wild, and Vasudeva was in a fix.

"Lord, what should I do," said Vasudeva in a hopeless voice.

Suddenly a miracle happened, the river parted and Vasudeva walked over the river bed. Throughout the way Vasudeva and the baby were protected from rain by the hood of the great eternal snake, Vasuki. Finally, Vasudeva reached Nanda's house.

Upon reaching Nanda's house Vasudeva found the mother, Yashoda, and her newborn baby girl in deep sleep. He had no time to think. He quickly exchanged the babies and returned to the prison with the infant girl, while the guards were still asleep.

As soon as Vasudeva entered the prison cell, the door got locked behind him and he was chained again as if nothing happened in between. The guards woke up and heard the cry of the baby. Kamsa was immediately informed and he came running to kill the child. But to his utter surprise he found it to be a girl and not a boy, as he expected. Devaki begged for the newborn baby's life from her brother.

"What can a girl do to you Kamsa? Spare her life, please!" appealed Devaki, lying at the feet of her brother.

The inhuman Kamsa did not pay attention to the appeal. As he was ready to kill the baby by smashing its head on a big boulder, the child slipped out of his hand and flew towards the sky.

At that moment, a heavenly voice was heard, "Kamsa, the one who shall destroy you still lives. He is growing in Gokul."

Next morning, Nanda and his wife Yashoda discovered the boy, left by Vasudeva, lying in the crib. They were a little puzzled but did not want to fuss about it because they might loose the baby. The baby was of dark complexion, so he was named Krishna.

Kamsa was frightened by the heavenly voice. He immediately sent for Putna, his wicked maid, and asked her to kill all the babies born on the same day when Devaki gave birth to the baby. Putna smeared poison on her breast and went around in the town of Gokul to breast-feed the babies born in the month of Bhado. In the beginning people, out of their goodness, did not suspect Putna's heinous plans, but as time passed, they found out that all the babies whom Putna fondled were dead. They began to search for Putna. In the mean time Putna reached Nanda's house and lovingly asked Krishna's mother, Yashoda, to give the baby to her to love and fondle. Yashoda gave the baby and, without any suspicion, went on with her daily chore.

Suddenly there was a loud shriek. Everyone came running to the courtyard and found to their surprise the dead body of Putna lying on the floor while Krishna was smiling and kicking. People now knew that Krishna was not an ordinary boy. Yashoda happily picked up Krishna and felt safe.

Krishna grew in Yashoda's house until he reached his teens. He later challenged Kamsa and killed him. Then he released his grandfather Ugrasena and reinstated him to his thrown. He respected and loved both his own parents, Vasudeva and Devaki, and his adopted parents, Nanda and Yashoda.

Janmashtami is celebrated with great pomp and show in Hindu temples and homes in India and the USA. The festival is celebrated for two days; on the day when Krishna took birth in the prison of Kamsa at Mathura and also on the following day to commemorate Krishna's presence in the house of Nanda and Yashoda at Gokul. Ardent devotees pray at the middle of the night celebrating Krishna's birth on the first day. Children join the celebration on the next day with worships (puja) and sweets (prasad). Decorations depicting Krishna's birth and his transfer to Gokul, are displayed very much the way Christ's birth is displayed during Christmas. This is called jhanki, a peek in the past. In Bengal, it is called, Gupta Vrindavan, meaning hidden Vrindavan, where Krishna spent time with his consort Radha. It is a great fun planning and executing the decoration that depicts Krishna's life in Gokul. The display is left for few days for friends and relatives to enjoy. The grandparents (or other elders) narrate to the children the interesting stories of Krishna, his pranks of childhood, romance with Radha in his young days, and finally, his days of kingship offering us the eternal truth of the great Bhagavad Gita. There is nothing in the world that can be compared with the profound philosophy of Gita written so long ago.

More from the News~

TIMES NEWS NETWORK [ SATURDAY, AUGUST 31, 2002 11:52:41 PM ]

LONDON: The age of `raga rock' briefly returns to Britain nine months after
the death of its creator, Beatle George Harrison, as thousands of devotees
throng to the largest Janmashtami celebrations outside India at a stately
manor formerly owned by the singer.

The celebrations, which Krishna devotees said combine popular Hinduism with
pop culture somewhat in the manner of Harrison's biggest solo hit `My Sweet
Lord', centre around the Bhaktivedanta Manor temple at Watford, which has
been transformed "into a small Indian town" for the next two days.

The festivities at the mock Tudor temple, described by Om Prakash Sharma,
president of the National Council of Hindu Temples as "one of the most
important Hindu shrines in Britain", are expected to attract some 10 per
cent of Britain's half-a-million-strong Hindu community.

The festival retains "the authentic mood of India's timeless and ancient
culture", said spokesman Bimal Krishna Das, even as its organisers, the
International Society for Krishna Consciousness (ISKCON) officially billed
it as meant for people "of all backgrounds".

Commentators said the deliberate eclecticism of the British Janmashtami,
which is in keeping with the UK's official policy of multi-culturalism,
comes at a testing time for British Hindus who are increasingly in the
spotlight in relation to the Gujarat violence.

In a sign of the times, British MPs Keith Vaz and Piara Singh Khabra are to
host an urgent conference this month (September) on the contemporary
concerns of Europe's largest body of Hindu students, the UK-based National
Hindu Students Forum spread across 51 universities.

With Britain's large Indian Muslim community spearheading a demand for the
government to ban the Vishwa Hindu Parishad (UK) and the RSS's British wing,
the Hindu Swayamsewak Sangh for their alleged moral and monetary support to
the perpetrators of the Gujarat violence, UK Hindus have stepped up a
campaign to stress the faith's inherent tolerance.

Last week, on a high-profile visit to Britain, deputy prime minister L K
Advani appeared to distance himself from the controversy over the VHP and
RSS when he told this paper the UK government was within its rights to "ban
whichever organisation it deemed proper".

Meanwhile, a spokeswoman for Britain's regulator of charitable
organisations, the Charity Commission, confirmed to this paper that it was
taking "very seriously a complaint about the VHP regarding alleged terrorist
links". The VHP denies the allegations.

The Commission also said it was evaluating the evidence for a formal inquiry
into "allegations of support for proscribed organisations in India by the
RSS".

British Hindu leaders point out that the controversy has done nothing to
dull the increasing popularity of the religion, which is the fourth largest
in the UK today.

At least some of the credit for this is claimed by ISKCON, popularly called
the Hare Krishna Movement, which counted Harrison as one of its most
high-profile celebrity Western supporters over more than 30 years.

(OPTIONAL) In the months since the singer's death, the Movement has made
headlines for its fervent homage, in concert with Harrison's more famous
Beatle colleague Paul McCartney, to his simple creed of joining Western pop
with Indian-inspired devotional music.

Now, nine months after Harrison's death, Krishna devotees say his "gift of
faith to the godless West" lives on in the ongoing celebrations of the
largest Hindu gathering outside India.

Here is a cool link...
www.chantandbehappy.com/manor/ (http://www.chantandbehappy.com/manor/)

You can hear George's buddies talk about the early days of Hare Krishna in London. That's about halfway down the page. Click where it says this~

"H.H. Mukunda Goswami and H.G. Syamasundara dasa
In the Beginning - Part 1A

Stories of the early days in London."

They mention Mick Jagger! He donated some steel beams...funny cuz the Rolling Stones weren't Prabhupad's fave band! LOL Also, it mentions that another of George's pals, Gurudas, lived at Golders Green!! Ah-ha!! So now we know where George was going!! http://www.beatlelinks.net/ubb/smilies/wink3.gif
Anyway, you can also listen to Govindam prayers, even download them, from the Radha Krishna Temple lp from George. The temples play this every morning, George himself, when greeting the dieties. Once when a devotee asked why Prabhupad himself isn't the one recorded (that the devotee would rather hear Prabhupad), Prabhupad made it very clear that HE would rather to hear George doing it! http://www.beatlelinks.net/ubb/smilies/images/icons/smile.gif

I think Mukunda is called His Holiness cuz he is an initiating guru. I don't think Shymasundara is...though IMHO he certainly should be! They both~ oh, Gurudas, too~ are so, so special. Easy to see why they are George's buddies. Did you know Shymasundara was a Fullbright scholar?

initiating as in taking disciples?? I think Shymasundara should also have that title, which is mainly honourary..Gurudasa of course aswell, just like H.H Tamal Krishna Goswami..i once made the mistake of writing "His Grace Mukunda Goswami" instead of "His Holiness" he didnt mind of course, or didnt even point it out, but i felt so disrespectful for doing it!! and no, i didnt know Shymasundara is a fullbright schloar..what is fullbright btw??

Not stupid at all!! It's confusing...I wondered myself cuz Prabhupad is "His Divine Grace", so "His Grace" is closer to that than "His Holiness"~ LOL....I can see George giggling about this right now. http://www.beatlelinks.net/ubb/smilies/images/icons/smile.gif We're all one under Krishna!! I have heard some prefer 'His/Her Grace' cuz they feel too humble to accept the other title. It's amazing honor, being a Fullbright scholar!
