Somewhere there was a topic about this - but I can't find it. Sorry if it is under my nose.
I have just re-acquired (due to my old one having a rather sad end MANY years ago) Joe Cockers cover of 'Something'. I kind of like Joe to begin with. But that very bluesy 'Something' is the greatest. Almost as good as George's version. http://www.beatlelinks.net/ubb/smilies/wink1.gif

He does have a habit of turning songs in to a very very good alternative.

Too many years ago I 'fell in love' with a rather gorgeous Richard Gere in the final scene of 'An Office and a Gentleman'. Looking back I can now see that it was more because of Joe Cocker singing 'Up Where We Belong' than anything Richard Gere did.

I have an album 'On the Road to Freedom' - Alvin Lee and Mylon LeFevre. It has on it a cover of George's 'So Sad'. Mylon does lead vocals and harmonies, George does guitar, slide, bass and harmony, Alvin does guitar and backing vocal, Ron Wood does 12 string guitar and Mick Fleetwood does drums.
My thoughts are that it is very nicely done and I feel quite O.K. about liking it a little better than George's own version on Darkhorse.
Firstly, because I'm not a big fan of that album and secondly because George had such a big input into this cover version.
The lyrics of this song make good reading just as poetry, though quite sad (even George says that) because it is about his break-up with Patti.
I find it interesting that they are written entirely in the third person. This is strange psychology for George who is not usually afraid to tell the world that he is crying.

One I like is "Here comes the sun" by Richie Havens (sorry if I mispelled his name).

As far back as I can remember, I must have been 5 or 6 years old, it's the very first Beatles song I had ever heard.

Could be why I like this cover...

But not as much as The Beatles version...

ABCKO, I have that version on a 45. For all you kiddies out there, that's what singles were called back then. http://www.beatlelinks.net/ubb/smilies/images/icons/wink.gif It is a good verison and if I'm not mistaken, Havens performed it at Woodstock.

To come back on So Sad from Alvin Lee, indeed the influence of George in this one is quickly recognized, but what a terrible vocals. Then even George so-sad voice on Dark Horse is better.

Ron Wood did Far East Man on I've got my own album to do.
George plays guitar and sings backing/double vocals. That's a good version.

I know what you mean. In fact,
each time I go back and view the Joe Cocker
movie (w/Mad Dogs and Englishmen on tour)
"Something" really sticks out-- not only because it's a great song, but also because
Joe seems to put his own heart and soul into
it... that's the way I like to sing a tune
myself--(if I can at the time-http://www.beatlelinks.net/ubb/smilies/images/icons/smile.gif --J.

I have just seen on the telly a rather wonderful cover of What is Life by Shawn Mullins. I thought it was excellent. I wish I could see it again. The clip is good too. I think it had year 2000 on it. No doubt some of you clever people out there know all about this. I don't even know who Shawn Mullins is.

I heard part of it here

http://www.shawn-mullins.com/

and downloaded it very quickly on WinMX

I like that he left the bass sound and the tambourines in his version.

Don't think that much about the horns. Guitars are great.

I don't know him (yet)

Thanks for this hint.

I found a great live version of Give Me Love by a certain Marisa Monte. It is very good, she mixed the end with another song. Check it out.

I'm not sure who Shawn Mullins is but he had a hit song a few years back called Shine. His cover of What is Life I've heard on the radio too. I thought it was quite good.

His cover also appeared at the end of Adam Sandler's movie Big Daddy (I think that's the name of the movie, anyway)

He kind of faded away after that.
