View Full Version : Storytellers - When every song is sung

'When I wrote When every song is sung, I had titled it Whenever. I got the chord sequence and 'when every song is sung' were the first words to come out of my mouth and it develope from there.
It was one of those that I tried svral times to record. Ronnie Spector had a go at it, Cilla Black als - in fact I started to produce it for Cilla as a single but we didn't finish it.
We also did it with Leon Russel and his wife Mary and in the end Ringo recorded it.
As Shirley Bassey once suggested in a newspaper, after having the hit with Something, that she and I could be like Dione Warwick and Burt Bacharach, if we got together, I thought this would be a good one for her'

Though the title was changed to "I'll Still Love You", I think Ringo did a fine job on that song.

"Is'nt it a pity..." that George did not play on Ringo's version although Clapton did do a good job. Are there any bootleg versions of this song with George singing it ?
FPSHOT, when (what year) did George write this one ?

Allow me. "When Every Song Is Sung" was originally titled "Whenever" and was recorded during the ATMP sessions, between May and October 1970. George tried to record it several times with many other artist, including Ronnie Spector, Cilla Black, Leon and Mary Russell, and finally Ringo. It was finally copyrighted on Nov. 28, 1972 as "When Ever Song Is Sung".
Ringo's version was released in Sept. 1976 on his Ringo's Rotogravure LP, titled as "I'll Still Love You".

<font size="2" face="Tahoma, Arial, sans-serif">It does sound like Clapton and my album doesn't seem to have any credits. Maybe they are lost.
Anyway I have completely fallen in love with this song. So perfect.
Simon Leng gives Ringo's delivery and the 'sub-Spector' production (what is that?) a bad time, but that is his opinion. I think Ringo sings it quite well (though probably not the ideal choice for the song) and the guitar is impressive and the music and lyrics are George at his best. IMHO.
Did anyone else ever end up recording it?

It was Lon Van Eaton (listed in the album credits, I had checked just before my last post).
Yes, does sound like Clapo and therefore quite a bit like George as well.
Clapton played on a nice, reggae number called "This be called a song" on the same album and that was what had confused into thinking he had played on "I'll still love you"...

I don't agree. As for riffs, maybe sometimes, but that's about it.

Here is a site with a photo of George seemingly WITH Lon Van Eaton, lending substantial credibility to the rumors of their aquaintence. images/icons/wink.gif

Thanks HC.
I was never questioning that Lon van Eaton played here. I just commented in passing that it did sound like Clapton.
The point of my bringing this up again was my question - Did anyone other than Ringo ever record this?
In a 'rival forum' they are suggesting that Cilla Black did. I am a little confused because, as FPSHOT has quoted above, George in I Me Mine says,
"I tried several times to record: Ronnie Spector, Phil's wife, had a go at it; Cilla Black also - in fact I started to produce it for Cilla as a single but we didn't finish it."
Has anyone heard Cilla's version?
Thanks.

Some interesting little bits from 'After the Break-up'.
It's talking about Ringo's Rotogravure and says how John and Paul helped out. Says, "George fails to make this an album featuring musical contributions from all four ex-Beatles as he is unable to attend any of the sessions. His typical guitar sound, on his own composition of 'I'll Still Love You', is recreated by Lon Van Easton."
Later on it says, '"I also asked George to write one (a song), but there was an old one of his that was never released by anybody that I always loved. I was on the session when it was recorded so in the end, I asked him if instead of writing one, could I have that old one? He said fine; it saved him a job. It's called 'I Still Love You', a big ballady thing." (Note: Although Goerge allows Ringo to record the song, he is not pleased with the result and takes legal action against Ringo. The action is resolved later this year.)'
There you go. I quite liked Ringo's version.

Hello Old_Moon_Shining, graemlins/wave1.gif *
Cilla Black recently released a 3CD anniversary collection in Britain and I believe one of the 'previously unreleased' tracks is the song being discussed in this thread...

Hello everyone, graemlins/wave1.gif *
Here's the info on how to get hold of the song, courtesy of cillablack.com (http://www.cillablack.com):-
In stores across the UK now is 'The Best of 1963-78' Cilla's landmark new 3CD set charting her musical signing with the EMI Group from her 1963 debut to her departure from the label in 1978.
This explosive 80 track retrospective (Cat : 584124 2) is as an understatement the ultimate BEST OF released to coincide with her 60th birthday. The set includes Cilla's most essential recordings featuring 19 British hit singles; highlights from 10 studio albums; 19 tracks that debut on CD; as well as the premier on CD in STEREO of recordings from hit albums 'Cilla' and 'Cilla Sings A Rainbow':-
'Dancing In The Street'
'Come to Me'
'Ol' Man River'
'You'd Be So Nice To Come Home To'
'Everything I Touch Turns To Tears'
'My Love Come Home'
The set also features 'I'll Still Love You' the single penned for Cilla in the 70s by George Harrison plus a further 6 unreleased songs: 'When You Walk In The Room', 'From The Inside', 'Follow', 'This Time I'm In It For Love', 'Slow Dance' and 'If I Could Put You In My Song' a track which fans will recall from Cilla's live shows.
Packaged with a comprehensive colour booklet featuring rare photos, biography, hand-written message from Cilla plus a wealth of celebrity anecdotes from the likes of Sir Paul McCartney, Burt Bacharach, Sir George Martin, Sir Andrew Lloyd Webber, David Mackay etc.
"It's fabulous and you should get it..." - Cilla Black
It's not clear if it's on this particular set, but I have a version of 'Step Inside Love' where Cilla is accompanied by Paul McCartney on guitar (he'd just taught her the song), which is on the earlier 'Abbey Road Decade' 3CD collection - one to look out for perhaps..?

If you're talking about 'I'll Still Love You' then the CD set is mid-price so I think it shouldn't be that expensive (around £15 or so): if you're talking about 'Step Inside Love', then send me a PM and I'll see what I can do.

Just a bit more trivia about this song.
August 1972: .....in his Friar Park Studios, George records, with Cilla Black on vocals and Eric Clapton on guitar, the tracks 'You've Gotta Stay With Me' and 'When Every Son Is Sung'....
December 1982: .....George meets Cilla Black and they decide to finish off their unreleased recordings from August, 1972.
