Pure Smokey started out with nice chord changes. George alays liked Smokey - You really got a hold on me - Robinson and considers him probably one of the best songwriters around. Great lyrics and great melodies AND he is fantastic to see in concert, because one tends to forget how many good tunes he has written. He brought out an album called Pure Smokey and George has met him a few times.

Sometimes you get an idea and write a specific song, but other times - often - it turns itself into whatever it's going to be - with the effot put into it - and this turned into Pure Smokey.

George tries to make a point - if he likes someone he likes to say I Like You. He doesn't want to die and then to think 'Oh I forgot to tell them I liked them'.

'Throughout my lifetimes I'd hesitate
I'd feel some joy
But before I showed my thanks
It became too late'

So this song turned into an all purpose thing of generally trying to show appreciation, and then to focus on his appreciation of Smokey.

This is a very good song of George, so here's the story behind it.

Oh, this is such a great song, with a Smokey feeling, too! I can hear his influence in George's music, like on Extra Texture. Maybe this period is when he was writing this wonderful song? images/icons/smile.gif
I've seen Smokey in concert! He's amazing, like his "Oh, Baby Baby"~ man, music at it's best!!!

The Beatles liked Smokey and Paul also said how awed they were when they met Smokey in 1964.
