View Full Version : Less favorite George solo album

FPSHOT

Which solo album is your less favorite.

Here are the candidates and I left out Wonderwall, Electronic Sounds, Bangla Desh and the Best Of ;

All Things Must Pass
Living in the Material World
Dark Horse
EXTRA TEXTURE: Read all about it
Thirty Three and 1/3
George Harrison
Somewhere in England
Gone Troppo
Cloud Nine
Live in Japan

My choice here is Somewhere in England. I find this album too much filled with keyboards.

------------------
"You're killing me George, you've got me crying, you bugger" - Ringo's 1st reaction hearing George's recorded solo for King of broken hearts and 2 guitar lines for I'll be fine anyway, Dec. 1997

http://www.beatlelinks.net/ubb/smilies/thinker.gif This one's even harder than choosing the favourite album, though I'd probably be inclined to go along with FPSHOT's choice for much the same reason.

While I do not despise the album, I have to admit it is the only one I do not own on CD.

I love the remakes of "Hong Kong Blues" and "Baltimore Oriole" though!

Baltimore Oriole - I just love the guitars and the horn. Wonderfull arrangement.

"Somewhere in England" for me also, it has just a few songs it that I like. I think on Gone Tropo there were more keyboards then on "Somewhere" but it has more songs I really like.

Somewhere in England get some votes.

Funny that I do happen to like a lot the rejected songs from the original album due to be released 8 months earlier, Oct. 1980.

The rejected ones are Tears of the world, Lay his head, Flying hour and Sat singing.

These were replaced by All those years ago, Teardrops, Blood from a clone and That which I have lost.

I like all four of these rejected songs. IMO "Somewhere" would have been a better album if it was released with these songs.

Many thanks to the person who put the edit post function over here.

Since so many seem to least prefer 'Somewhere' I am forced to speak up and say "I kinda like it". To nominate one I don't like kills me but here goes. 'Darkhorse'. I know that there is some excellent music on there (I listened to it yesterday - so I'm speaking with confidence here). I'm just not comfortable with it and it reminds me of a low period for him.

Well now - where were we - oh yes 'darkhorse'! My dictionary says:

"1) a racehorse, competitor, etc., about whom little is known or who unexpectedly wins. 2) a person whose capabilities may be greater than they are known to be."

Who can argue with that!!? George qualifies!! so your name is apt. Relax!! The album - well that is another story.

If we have to pick our least favorite LP, then I'd have to say "Gone Troppo". All of George's other albums have quite a lot of material I like, "Somewhere In England" included.

#1 "Extra texture: Read all about it" by far is my least favorite (I hardly ever play it anymore...). "Dark Horse" &"Gone Troppo" are other ones I have problems with...
http://www.beatlelinks.net/ubb/smilies/nono.gif

"Somewhere in England" ? It's amongst my favorites. I really like "All those years ago" (especially George Martin's strings), "Save the world" (mind you, I can't stand the "Fisher Price" keyboard solo), "Teardrops" (it should have been a minute or so shorter though) and I REALLY like "Blood from a clone" especially considering why he wrote it...

There will come a time ABCKO that you will play Extra Texture again with much joy.

It is a 'sad' album, songs like Ooh Baby, World of Stone, Can't stop thinking about you, Grey cloudy lies, one should not play after one another so much unless you want to become depressed and/or fall asleep.

Answer's at the end has very good lyrics
This guitar is a fresh Whyle my guitar with a nice duet again between Clapper and Hari
You is a good single record
Legs, one must like http://www.beatlelinks.net/ubb/smilies/wink1.gif

It seemed pretty natural to me to bring this old topic back since now I got the chance to hear most of George's solo material. I just wanted to say a few things:

1º "Somewhere In England" is, indeed, an album too much filled with keyboards.
2º "Gone Troppo" is not between George's best solo efforts, but still is a good album with high points ("Wake Up My Love", "Unknown Delight", "Circles") and very, very low ones ("Baby Don't Run Away", "I Really Love You").
3º Sorry if I offend anyone with this phrase, but "That Which I Have Lost" is probably the worst Harrisong I ever got the chance to hear, and
4º "Extra Texture", "Dark Horse" and "Living In The Material World" seem to me stronger records than "Gone Troppo" and "Somewhere In England", recognizing that both of them still have lots of good things to save.
5º George's albums, overall, seem to have a little more "substance" (if you get what I'm saying) than the Paul ones... Just my opinion, I've heard most of both, and I love the Paul albums, but George's are deeper and stronger, most times.
6º Comments and horrible replies are welcomed. http://www.beatlelinks.net/ubb/smilies/images/icons/smile.gif

1. I said that too
2. Never understood why someone did not decline some songs of this album, like for Somewhere in England, although the declined ones on the latter to me are pretty good. Baby don't run away indeed is one of these sad songs that I hardly play.
3. Don't agree at all here, these guitars are brilliant impo

Apr 16 1990 - George appears in Jim Capaldi's video for ‘Oh Lord, Why Lord.' George had done backup for the same song on Capaldi's album ‘Some Come Running.' The video was the only promo video shown at the Nelson Mandela concert at Wembley.

My least favourite George album has to be "Extra Texture" - the atmosphere is generally morbid, the vocals are still not up to scratch, and the production is bad. My copy seems to sound murky, with little treble.

Start with "All Things Must Pass", if you don't already have it. And go on with "Cloud Nine", "Living In The Material World" or "Best Of Dark Horse"... and if you can't find them, do a good download.

And welcome to the world of Hari. http://www.beatlelinks.net/ubb/smilies/images/icons/grin.gif

But if you do download be sure to buy them when you do see them, so as not to do George out of his dues.

Welcome from me also to this exciting world.

Thanks darky and old_moon_shining! http://www.beatlelinks.net/ubb/smilies/images/icons/smile.gif I'm pleased to enter the world of Hari. I love George.

I want to buy all the albums of course, that's sorta expensive though, so for now a good download would work.

I know a few of George's solo songs, and I love them!!

Yeah... download and then buy... "try some and buy some"... but do whatever you can to enjoy George's music, which is great in most cases. http://www.beatlelinks.net/ubb/smilies/images/icons/grin.gif

The problem isn't so much not being able to afford them as not being able to locate them to buy them. The only two that I can see that are readily available new are 'Best of George Harrison' and the fabulous newly re-mastered and delightfully packaged (howzat http://www.beatlelinks.net/ubb/smilies/wink1.gif ) 'All Things Must Pass' with 5 bonus tracks including the new 'My Sweet Lord 2000'.
He has promised us, before he got sick, that he would re-master the rest of his collection and put it on the market. One is anxiously waiting.
They often come up in second-hand shops.
The point is I don't feel comfortable just taking George's music. It is his hard work and I believe that he deserves payment for it as much as any one of us likes to be paid for our work. So if you download just so that you can actually hear his stuff remember to buy when it's available.

It's not the treble controle that has to be fiddled arround with when you play "Extra texture". It's the volume controle, it must be set at zero. Only then is that album fit to be listened to...

My least favourite album is Dark Horse. Partly because of the hoarse vocals, and also because it was obviously written at a difficult time and that comes accross in quite a depressing way. It's not all bad and there are some very good songs on there, but it does get me down a bit when I listen to it.

It's good you brought this up, I haven't seen ABCKO's reply.
I agree with you ABCKO the volume controle is the problem but I disagree with the fact it should be on zerro it should be somewhere near hundred.Especially the last song.

My less favourites solo albums are all of them except All things must pass. He had 5 or 6 good songs after that but nothing else.

Sorry but I'm not a big fan of his solo career.
Anyways I know he's an excellent musician, in fact, my favourite ever song is Something, to me is the best song of the history. It's perfect and I put it over any song of John and Paul.

Easily my least favourite George album is Brainwashed but since that's not on the list - Dark Horse. I agree that there is too much synth on Somewhere but like someone else says, it does have Baltimore Oriole on it.

I couldn't pick a least favorite because I love them all far too much!! (I could with the other Fabs, I think, but not George.) Each is so unique~ the work with various production styles, different moods reflecting so perfectly some aspect of George's heart and spirit at each time.

I love George's voice on Dark Horse, for example, cuz it is different and kinda sexy. That whole album is sexy, in fact. Then LITMW is so spiritual~ very Krishna Conscious as Symasundara pointed out. Somewhere In England has Teardrops & Writings on the Wall, so it has to stay for sure. And Gone Troppo is really always on the top of my CD stack...really, really a great CD.
Extra Texture is perfect in so many ways.

Yup. This is just too difficult!!

Tied for last place:

"Dark horse"

-George should have waited for his throat to heal up before doing that album...

- I REALLY like "Ding dong, ding dong" except for that one, I can't say I play that album often. As for the title song, I prefer the demo of it, that my good friend (and yours) FPSHOT was kind enough to send me some time ago.

"Extra texture"
- I like "You", and have recently taken a liking to "Ooh baby (you know that I love you)", other than that the album would collect a lot of dust in my CD rack...

All other Harri albums get played regularly at "Club ABCKO"...

Well, I think all his albums have there high points but my worst two would have to be...

Extra Texture: There is just too little character in this album. 'You' and 'Legs' are a couple of high points but if it had carried on where Living In the Material World had finished production wise it could have been much better.

*Gone Troppo: There are some albums I own that even I can't listen to from start to finish, this is one of them. It suffers VERY badly from that totally overdone 80's style production graemlins/afraid5.gif Although I admit this album for me is like a box of Cadburys Roses at Christmas, there are some sweets (e.g. Caramel Truffle) I just love and others that at the end of Christmas (e.g. Coffee creme) get given to the Grandparents graemlins/teeth1.gif

I know this is all down to personal opinion but I was quite shocked to see Brainwashed and Somewhere in England on some peoples lists. True, there are allot of Keyboards on SIE but it could have been allot worse, it could have sounded like Gone Troppo graemlins/afraid1.gif

BTW, like the new look!!

Like HC, I really couldn't choose a least favourite George album. Dark Horse and Extra Texture have way too many great tracks on them to be a contender, and Gone Troppo is up there with 33 1/3, George Harrison and Brainwashed. The only album I don't play too often (well, ever) is Electronic Sound.

Excellent reading FPSHOT. I read it from the top. A trip down memory lane reading Nowhere Man's comments. Still feel the same though. Darkhorse is my least favourite because of his voice and his life at that time. It just depresses me and I feel his pain too much.

I may just add that Somewhere In England is still my least favorite Harrison album, and "That Which I Have Lost" is still my least favorite of all of his songs. Just a tiny little confession here. images/icons/wink.gif

I'm not a huge fan of Extra Texture, only a few songs that are 'excellent' for me (The Answer's at the End, Tired of Midnight Blue, His Name is Legs) on it. And 'You' has to be his most overrated song.

FPSHOT

Sometimes indeed I wondered about songs on albums. Like why not complete I Live For You and leave Isn't It A Pity part 2 out. Why 'A Little Bit More Of You'.

But Ringo_Rama, how about the remake of While My Guitar Gently Weeps, i.e. This Guitar Can't Keep From Crying.

ringo_rama
May 09, 2003, 07:51 PM
It's ok. WMGGW is definitely superior, and This Guitar really shouldn't have been a single, but it is a listenable track. Not 'excellent' though.

FPSHOT
May 09, 2003, 08:03 PM
I agree, far from being a potential single. It's a good song in many ways, to people who know about George.

He was singing away some anger about the 1974 tour and I think in parts of the lyrics he uses the reference to 'this guitar' to hide that actually he is referring to himself.

"This here guitar can feel quite sad
Can be high strung, sometimes get mad
It can't understand or deal with hate
Responds much better to love"

And one who likes guitars and slide solo's, well just play the song. It's all in there.

ringo_rama
May 09, 2003, 08:05 PM
Yes, I definitely see the metaphor in that verse.

But wait, didn't his guitar stop weeping and gently smile at Bangladesh? images/icons/wink.gif
