Out here we see CD's coming out which have popular 'car' or ' whilst driving' songs, you will know what I mean.
This is one of those songs.
If you would just hear it while sitting at your kitchen table, it would be different.
(there's money in there http://www.beatlelinks.net/ubb/smilies/thinker.gif ! Kitchen table songs CD's http://www.beatlelinks.net/ubb/smilies/bigeyes2.gif )

You know how much I LOVE "Got My Mind Set On You"... It is the first Beatle-related memory I have, from when I was about 5 years old, hearing it on the radio, and dancing to it... Yeah, now it sounds more like a driving tune, like a "Travelling Wilbury" sound...
It also was the last solo-Beatle #1 single in the US. http://www.beatlelinks.net/ubb/smilies/clap.gif

Abnormally good? Is that because normally you don't like the song or because your car has a dud sound system? I hope it is the bit about the system becasue that little song is such a beauty. As you have all said, it is one of those ones that has heaps of memories attached to it...and I remember that music video when it came out like it was yesterday.

Anyone ever see the "Beatles First US Visit" video? It's wonderful, if you haven't...anyway, there's a scene in there where the Beatles are listening to the radio in New York, and Murray the K asks them if they have any requests for him to play -- and George says, "Yeah, can you play "Got My Mind Set On You!" An interesting bit of trivia...I wonder if he ever remembered that he did that when he finally covered the song? Apparently he was a fan of the original version (I don't remember who did it) way back when...

Well,
During the Cloud 9 recordings, they had a selection of 17 songs mastered at FPSHOT for the album, there was only one cover song, which was an update of the James Ray song George had heared when he visited his sister in Benton Illenois, september 1963 with brother Peter.
George said in The Quite One, "I did that because Jim Keltner got his drum pattern going that was a cross between swing and rock.
Gary Wright turned around and said; hey doesn't that remind you of Got My Mind Set On You. I was so surprised that anyone had ever heared that song".

Yes, he even has a copy of it I understand. James Ray was the performer. Apparently he did change it a bit. Left out a verse (the words of which would have brought the whole thing down) and turned it into a lively positive piece. I'm sure FPSHOT will have more details.
I've got the lyrics of the original if anyone is interested.

Yeah, I think George did have at least a subliminal memory of that. He plainly liked the song and did a wonderful version of it in 1988-89. I have that video of the Beatles' first U.S. tour and I JUST PLAIN LOVE IT, YEAH, YEAH, YEAH! It is SO MUCH fun! How can anyone NOT like it? It's WONDERFUL! George's request for the song he would, some 25 years later claim for his own was, in retrospect very prophetic. http://www.beatlelinks.net/ubb/smilies/thinker.gif Really makes you think.
