View Full Version : Cloud nine

Well Sleepy recently (thank you Sleepy) explained to me what "Cloud Nine" means as an English language expression. So I don't have doubts with the title. I don't have the album, but it seems to be very appreciated by people. A recent poll in another Beatle site gave these results:
What's your favorite George album BESIDES "All Things Must Pass"?
Cloud Nine 31%
Living In The Material World 18%
33 1/3 14%
George Harrison 10%
Dark Horse 9%
Extra Texture 7%
Gone Troppo 4%
Somewhere In England 3%
Not very surprisingly, "Cloud Nine" took advantage and win. I've only heard some songs of the album, and I think it sounds great, even today, with that '80s sound that Jeff Lynne put into the production. Ringo and Jim Keltner's work in the drums is amazing, and also George developes even more his trademark slide guitar work... The songs I know: "Got My Mind Set On You" (very special to me, the very first Beatle-related song that I liked when I was 5), "When We Was Fab" (simply a masterpiece), "This Is Love", "Cloud Nine", and "Someplace Else" (this latest one being a particularly good love song that's very underrated and never played in the radio).
"Cloud Nine" seems to be a great album, but very badly appreciated, since it's no longer available (at least in this part of the world). What do you think about it?

I think Cloud Nine is a wonderful lp! What's funny is that my sister-in-law was over tonight and, even tho' I've known her for 10 years, I found out that George is her favorite Beatle and "Got My Mind Set on You" is her fave George song. I think "This is Love" is a beautiful song. It's one that I could listen to over and over. The album itself works, I think, because it's got a good mix of songs. When it was released it was nice to know that George still knew how to rock. http://www.beatlelinks.net/ubb/smilies/images/icons/smile.gif

Darkhorse, I am sad for any George fan who doesn't have 'Cloud 9'. Do you have second-hand CD stores in your part of the world? It is quite possible to get some of Georges stuff that way where I live.

Cloud Nine is a very good album. It was his most commercially successful album since ATMP. And definitely a big improvement over his prior studio album, Gone Troppo.

Maybe old stores in Santiago might have collector copies of the vinyl or the audio cassette tape. But I think it just might be the right time for George to re-release all of his work and make it available to the average audience around the world... It's always fun to search through bootlegs (which are always available anyway), but it would be even more appreciated by fans a massive re-releasing coming from George, maybe with remastering/remixing and a few bonus tracks (like "Shangai Surprise", which I've heard quite a few times)... Thanks for your concern, though...

I agree - pretty dumb poll.
I would be interested in reading Sleepy's explanation of what cloud 9 means. Where is that?
Darkhorse, I was having trouble getting 'Go Cat Go' where George does a track with Carl Perkins, so I rang second-hand shops around the country until I found one and they posted it to me. Just trying to be helpful.

'Gone Troppo' gets 4%. Is that because people don't like it or because people haven't heard it? I think it had very poor distribution. I'd be interested to know who has it and what they think of it.

Actually I find the Cloud 9 album pretty darn good.
It has somuch different styles and George sounds so fresh.
The title song which is Blues-alike and has this EC/Hari duet and a heavy backing.
That's what it takes with extreme vocals,
Fish on the sand Devil's radio and This is love good rocking, which is not often done by Hari.
When we was fab, quality time, back to the Beatles days.
Those are my favorites of the album.

I'll never forget (even before I knew there was going to be an album released) I was working in the garden and heard 'Got My Mind' playing on the neighbours radio. I listened - it sounded like George, and then they said it was - I nearly cut my foot off with the hoe.

Trying to make this topic live again just because I can actually comment the album since I own it now.
My favorite track is totally "When We Was Fab". I can't imagine another Beatle-parody (I can't find another word to describe either) that describes that beautiful epoque in the history of the world from the eyes of someone who actually lived through the whole thing. My favorite part is when Ringo (because I think he's on drums there) just totally loses control of the drums and the bass player (Lynne?) follows him and then George appears singing "and you really got a hold on me"... That's just a masterpiece. And then the sitar ending... Hmmm... I love that song.
Well... "Cloud Nine" is a soft rocker/bluesy track which I loved from the first time, as it's a great starter and it could've been a single as well. "That's What It Takes" is between my favorites because of the vocals and that keyboard arrangement that makes the song so special. "Fish On The Sand" and "Wreck Of The Hesperus" would be more appreciated by me if I knew what on Earth George was thinking about when he wrote them (the first one could easily have been a Paul song because of the lyrics, and the second one... I just don't get it)... but musically they're great, as they're fantastic rockers, just like "Devil's Radio". I've always loved "This Is Love", because of the simple yet powerful message... "Just For Today" gave me chills, George's vocals never sounded so moving... and "Breath Away From Heaven" is such a beautiful japanese joke, so well-arranged...
Am I missing anything? Oh yeah, "Got My Mind Set On You" was the last #1 by a solo Beatle... And it's really well-deserved. A great, uplifting track and a great closer.
Those would be my thoughts, thank you very much. http://www.beatlelinks.net/ubb/smilies/images/icons/smile.gif

I don't think Paul could write 'Fish on the Sand'. It's about how without God he is like a 'fish on the sand'. You must have seen one at some time - thrashing about and gasping.
'Wreck of the Hesperus' he says is an expression his mother used (mine did also). He says it's from a poem from Victorian times (I always thought it was a ship).He says it's tongue-in-cheek lyric about the exaggeration of how I'm supposed to be these days. "I'm getting as old as Methuselah, I'm getting old as my mother." It's is just a comment on the ageing process. You will find out soon enough about that.
Glad you like 'Just for Today'. If you sit in the dark by yourself and listen to that it really 'moves' you. Note the spelling of that word dear ex-cousin. http://www.beatlelinks.net/ubb/smilies/teeth1.gif

I have found the poem 'The Wreck of the Hesperus'. The little explanation that goes with it is as follows:
"This beautiful poem by Longfellow is one of the finest stories in verse. The tragic tale of the wreck of the vessel, the picture of the raging storm, with the child's terror and her father's calmness, the finding of the drowned girl - all is told without waste of words, but in just the words that mean most and stir the imagination."
The first verse says:
It was the schooner Hesperus
That sailed the wintry sea;
And the skipper had taken his little daughter
To bear him company.
22 verses later it finishes:
Such was the wreck of the Hesperus,
In the midnight and the snow!
Christ save us all from a death like this
On the reef of Norman's Woe!

Me too.
------------------
Friar Park Studio Henley-On-Thames, the place to be;
Crackerbox Palace, the Forum to visit.
Here it is for you, folks...
The Wreck of the Hesperus
by Henry Wadsworth Longfellow
It was the schooner Hesperus,
That sailed the wint'ry sea;
And the skipper had taken his little daughter,
To bear him company.
Blue were her eyes as the fairy-flax,
Her cheeks like the dawn of day,
And her bosom white as the hawthorn buds
That ope in the month of May.
The skipper he stood beside the helm,
His pipe was in his mouth,
And watched how the veering flaw did blow
The smoke now West, now South.
Then up and spake an old Sailor,
Had sailed the Spanish Main,
"I pray thee put into yonder port,
For I fear a hurricane.
"Last night, the moon had a golden ring,
And tonight no moon we see!"
The skipper, he blew a whiff from his pipe,
And a scornful laugh laughed he.
Colder and louder blew the wind,
A gale from the North-east;
The snow fell hissing in the brine,
And the billows frothed like yeast.
Down came the storm, and smote amain
The vessel in its strength;
She shuddered and paused, like a frighted steed,
Then leaped her cable's length.
"Come hither! come hither! my little daughter,
And do not tremble so;
For I can weather the roughest gale
That ever wind did blow."
He wrapped her warm in his seaman's coat
Against the stinging blast;
He cut a rope from a broken spar,
And bound her to the mast.
"O father! I hear the church-bells ring,
O say what may it be?"
"'Tis a fog-bell on a rock-bound coast!"
And he steered for the open sea.
"O father! I hear the sound of guns,
O say what may it be?"
"Some ship in distress, that cannot live
In such an angry sea!"
"O father! I see a gleaming light,
O say what may it be?"
But the father answered never a word,
A frozen corpse was he.
Lashed to the helm, all stiff and stark,
With his face turned to the skies,
The lantern gleamed through the gleaming snow
On his fixed and glassy eyes.
Then the maiden clasped her hands and prayed
That saved she might be;
And she thought of Christ who stilled the wave
On the Lake of Galilee.
And fast through the midnight dark and drear,
Through the whistling sleet and snow,
Like a sheeted ghost, the vessel swept
Towards the reef of Norman's Woe.
And ever the fitful gusts between
A sound came from the land;
It was the sound of the trampling surf,
On the rocks and the hard sea-sand.
The breakers were right beneath her bows,
She drifted a dreary wreck,
And a whooping billow swept the crew
Like icicles from her deck.
She struck where the white and fleecy waves
Looked soft as carded wool,
But the cruel rocks, they gored her sides
Like the horns of an angry bull.
Her rattling shrouds, all sheathed in ice,
With the masts went by the board;
Like a vessel of glass she stove and sank,
Ho! ho! the breakers roared!
At daybreak, on the bleak sea-beach,
A fisherman stood aghast,
To see the form of a maiden fair
Lashed close to a drifting mast.
The salt sea was frozen on her breast,
The salt tears in her eyes;
And he saw her hair, like the brown seaweed,
On the billows fall and rise.
Such was the wreck of the Hesperus,
In the midnight and the snow!
Christ save us all from a death like this
On the reef of Norman's Woe!

Bringing this forward again, because there was a very good discussion here which may be picked up again.

Having listened to the tracks over and over again, the solo for "This Is Love" stands out to me as one of the greatest momentsin the music of the 80's. Yes, it sounds 80's with the synths and everything, but George manages to make it sublime. The song itself is great because of the lyrics and the atmosphere i.e. the instruments and arrangements surrounding then. But the 80's sounds are just so well gathered by this slide guitar solo... Just takes my breath away. And I can only compare it to what he did to Belinda's "Leave A Light On For Me". Again taking a pop song into the level of sublimity.
Magnificent.

Good to see you here again mate.
Indeed this solo is magnificent, the whole song is to me the best of the album. Rocking, good backing by Jeff, long solo.
There is a sound-relation now you mention it, to the sound on the solo he did for Belinda's hitrecord.
You should get your hands on the video to that song http://www.beatlelinks.net/ubb/smilies/wink1.gif it is wonderful, so happy he looks at the party showed in the video and so strong he is with that cool denim jacket performing the song.
