View Full Version : Finally... All things must pass

OK as you may know, after a lot of searching and waiting, I finally bought yesterday my copy of the remastered "All Things Must Pass" 2-CD set. The sound for the great, old tracks, was great..."Art Of Dying" and "Let It Down" never sounded so powerful, "Apple Scruffs" and "Isn't It A Pity" are emotive; the bass and drum parts are very notorious; and, overall, the remastering work is amazing...

And the bonus tracks... "I Live For You" is a nice little song; the acoustic original versions to "Beware Of Darkness" and "Let It Down" sound like tracks from a possibly upcoming "George Harrison Anthology" (let's just hope http://www.beatlelinks.net/ubb/smilies/images/icons/wink.gif) and the backing track to "What Is Life" is quite an oddity... But "My Sweet Lord 2000" http://www.beatlelinks.net/ubb/smilies/images/icons/confused.gif Am I the only one who didn't like it? I don't know what it is... I don't like changing... And that song is such a classic, wonderfully recorded in a great original version with a great guitar riff that was completely changed for this new version, as were the background vocals and even the melody of the original song... I would have liked a demo tape or a different mix from the original song rather than this remaking... I don't say it's a bad version, I'm only saying it's different... And that song was almost perfect. It didn't need changing at all.

Please feel free to post your comments about the reissued ATMP and about "My Sweet Lord 2000" here.

Darkhorse - all I can say is give it time. When I first heard MSL2000 I think 'shock' would have been the appropriate word. All the same I was glad to just hear his current voice. But it grew on me and quite quickly, now I like it a lot, in some ways even prefer it. I agree the origional was 'perfect' and don't tamper with that, but he did, and I for one am glad because the George of the last 20 years is my favourite George.

Maybe he changed it because he was sued over the original?

Other than that George commented several times about MSL 2000 that he just wanted to add something extra in the re-issue, he also said

'At the time, the song was so popular and also so controversial that the most important thing about it for me was that it: in it's small way conjured up a touch of spirituality something we are very short of...'

during the Yahoo chat.

As Old Moon also wrote, I also had my doubts hearing it the first few times, but it finally got to me too. It is just the comparing, which makes it hard in the beginning, seems like someon else doing it, with a Dylan-like style of singing.

Anyway, Darkhorse, let us know in a month or so if you have changed tune.

On I live for you, I have some demo versions which I find better than the one which is now on the album.

Same for the basic tracks of What is Life and also there are various versions of Art of Dying which I prefer over this on.

Yet, that keeps the bootlegs worth while.

For the rest, the overall sound of the original material has certainly improved and that's enough for me.

I read that he "tweaked" with it to: a.) keeo it from sounded like another invitation to a lawsuit and b.) to reflect the changes that he has gone through since its' original release. He doesn't envision things the same way today as he did in 1970. So on the remaster you have the original and the new. If you've ever heard George in Live recordings you will note that he is one of those who changes the phrasing and medoly of things from time to time in an effort to keep them fresh. check out the boots from his 1974 tours and his "Live In Japan" CD and you'll see what I mean.

A few more comments: FPSHOT, right... The versions in your boots must be better than the ones released on the remastered album because they're from its original time... The "little overdubbing circa-2000" is not what I expected... The best thing on the album as bonus tracks are the acoustic version of "Beware Of Darkness" and the backing track to "What Is Life"... But (and surely you will now) there must be lots and lots of other outtakes and songs unreleased from the sessions that could have been chosen over these ones... They are good, and the good part of them is that they show us (as Old Moon stated) how George's voice is sounding "here today", but... The album was recorded 30 years ago. The good thing would have been to improve the sound (which they successfully did http://www.beatlelinks.net/ubb/smilies/thumbsup.gif ) and to add some things from the time of recording.

I'm giving MSL 2000 a change, and I kind of like it. No comparisons to the original version, though... http://www.beatlelinks.net/ubb/smilies/images/icons/smile.gif

And thank you Mindgames... It took so long, but yeah, we're catching up with the world!

I think I have about 8 different versions/demos/outtakes of What Is Life and the same for Beware of Darkness and Art of Dying. And e.g. Apple Scruffs.

The Art of Dying demos made me choose this song as the most favorite of the album, although I still believe that some demo's, specially with the simple combination of rocking guitar basic tracking + solo guitar + bass + drums is the best version.

"Art Of Dying" is also my favorite. It would be great to hear it without those trumpets and winds... But the song is great enough not to suffer from that... We agree again http://www.beatlelinks.net/ubb/smilies/thumbsup.gif

I have some versions which as said, do not yet have the trumpets and additional instruments. There you can hear the basic of the song whith the eletric guitar and also without Badfinger, which makes it a good rocking basic.

I've got it today, bought it while I was at a record fair.I'd seen "ATMP" in the shops a few times but didn't buy it, the main reason is that I've got the original release and hate to buy things twice, but the bonus tracks and hearing about the the sound improvement made me finaly decide to buy it.

I don't know if the sound has really improved, it sometimes sounds thin, (don't know another way to describe it) have to do some relistening.

As for the bonus tracks I already had the version of "What's life" on a bootleg but the others and especially "Beware of darkness" are a welcome addition, I prefer the version of "I live for you" I have on bootleg tho, and rather had the original versions without the 2000 overdubs. Well I like the new version of "My Sweet Lord" prefering the original ofcourse but I like it.

Now what shall I do with the original CD release. http://www.beatlelinks.net/ubb/smilies/thinker.gif
