These two track do not get so much attention impo, and it in fact were just added to or hidden on the Best Of album, whilst Poor Little Girl was also on a single.

I find them two very good songs, so just wrote a short review.

Both are produced by George himself which I find extreme, because from that period there are not so much official recordings where you don't have the Lynne producing style (how good it may be btw).

The sound is very bright and clear, good relaxed strong voice by George.

On C. Business the lot of different electric guitars and the slidesmake it a real Hari tune/sound, specially with the George O'Hara backing vocals.

The basic slide part has such a nice melody line.

The slide guitars sound as if they are in a question/answer duet, like also e.g. on This Guitar Can't Keep From Crying.

On Poor Little Girl, you can here a guitar line finger typing 3 chords, like he did on Badge, I'm The Greatest, Here comes the Sun and others.

The load of guitars here put in a sort of Badfinger accoustic sound and also nice addings are from mandolin and slide. The guitar bit in the end sounds like That's What It Takes.

Very good harmonies, which sometimes sound like having Jeff there, but I don't think he is. Perfect oeh's.

Good horns, no doubt by Jim Horn (without his Hollywoord Horn Players).

Now he considers producing Volume One by himself and hearing these two, I am pretty relaxed about it.

Comments please.

"C. Business" is fun George stuff because when he reminisces about past years ("Living in the Material World", "When We Was Fab"...etc) he puts in fun references.

"Broke my strings on the BBC..."
"Got my face on Ed Sullivan..."
"Lost the misses, missed the girlfriend in this Cockamamie Business!"

"Poor Little Girl" to me has a bit of a "Savoy Truffle" feel to it. Chewy horns and biting guitar work.

Two excellent tracks for sure.

Another 'lost' Harrison gem to me is "This is Love" off the Cloud nine album.

Oh I like "Cockamamie Business"... The lyrics are pretty strong (listen to that "chopping forests for McDonald's and the Burger King" bit) and the slide guitar is really beautiful. Nice song. http://www.beatlelinks.net/ubb/smilies/thumbsup.gif

I've always loved those two tracks. I almost never got to hear them. Every copy of "Best of DH, Vol. 2" that I had found had a sticker...right over the track listing ! So not knowing for sure if I had all those songs already or not had me hesitating to buy it. Glad I finally did, 'cos since the day I bought it, I have'nt seen another copy of it anywhere.

"Poor little girl", love the guitar intro. "Cockamamie Business"...very clever the way the lyrics switch from a trip down memeory lane to singing about the forrests & the ozone ring...

For those not acquainted with these two songs:

Cockamamie Business

Bust my back on the levy,
Broke my strings on the BBC
Found the chops on Eel Pie Island,
Paid my dues at the marquee.
Slagged off by the N.M.E.,
Lost my stash, my virginity
In this cockamamie business.

Got my face on Ed Sullivan,
Broke my heart on the Soul Train.
Introduced to Bad Company,
Lost cells down the brain drain.
And befor I could mend,
Lost the missus, misses the girlfriend
In this cockamamie business.

Now we like to air condition,
Though the air has no ozone ring.
Still they're chopping down the forest
For McDonald's and the Burger King.
Eating cows with such persistence,
Doesn't offer much resistance
To this cockamamie business.

There are too many things
Stressing out the nervous system.
Girls you used to know,
The fellas that may kissed 'em.
Some got rabies, some got fleas,
Some got incurable diseases
From this cockamamie business.

Cockamamie business.

Now ev'rybody's after
As many points as they can get,
As long as it's not them that has to pay,
No one really mind the debt.
5-star actors, tax inspectors,
Film producers and directors
With their cockamamie business.

Cockamamie business.

Well, you do what you can,
We can't do much more that.
(No, you can't do what he just said)
Some days you're pretty sharp,
On other days you feel half dead.
(While you make your daily bread)
Didn't want to be a star,
Wanted just to play guitar
In this cockamamie business.

Cockamamie business,
Cockamamie business,
Cockamamie business,
This cockamamie business,
Cockamamie business,
This cockamamie business.

And the other:

Poor Little Girl

Poor little girl,
With her head in the air,
There's a poorly sick world all around you.

Poor horny boy,
One thing on his mind,
That poor little girl, he must find you.

There's a whole lotta love,
It's shaking inside of me
And I must figure out why it's there.
There's a bottomless heart,
That's hooked into all of you
And it's wondering how much you care.

Poor little girl,
Whole in her heart,
There's a poorly sick world all around you.

Poor horny boy,
One thing on his mind,
Poor little girl, he must find you.

There's a whole lotta love, (whole lotta love)
It's shaking inside of me (whole lotta love)
And I must figure out why it's there.
There's a bottomless heart, (whole lotta love)
That's hooked into all of you (whole lotta love)
And it's wondering how much you care.

Poor little boy,
Head in a whirl,
There's a phony slick world all around you.

That poor little girl,
With her head in the air,
That poor little boy, he must find you.

There's a whole lotta love, (whole lotta love)
Shaking inside of me (whole lotta love)
Must figure out why it's still there.
There's a bottomless heart, (whole lotta love)
Hooked into all of you (whole lotta love)
And it's wondering how much you care.

There's a need and desire I have (whole lotta love)
To express what's inside of me, (whole lotta love)
Must figure out while it's still there.
And an endless amount of, (whole lotta love)
Of a joy that you touch me with, (whole lotta love)
Though it's almost too much for me to bear.

Poor little girl.

I know it's printed that way in the booklet - BUT - what does 'Whole in her heart' mean?

While I haven't heard this song, just from reading through the lyrics it seems that there's an intended double meaning there with "whole in her heart" suggesting her heart is intact, or "whole", as everything else falls apart around her, yet at the same time that there's still something that appears to be missing (the boy, or his love?) and that there is in fact a "hole" in her heart.

I'm sorry but I find Cockamamie Business an embarrassingly bad record - a rare stinker for Geogre. Poor Little Girl, on the other hand is excellent. But let's face it neither are as good as Cheer Down.
