View Full Version : The Concerts for Bangla Desh

Is there a member who was actually at one of the concerts back then ?
I saw the film of the concerts at the cinema when it was released, about four or five times and still watch the video quite a lot. Smashing to see it on the big screen.
I was much younger then ofcourse and at that time I did not realize or did not care, that in fact the music was mixed and in some cases was not the same music as the filmed sections, like in wah-wah. What I try to say is the pictures from concert 1 and the music from concert 2.
Anyway, now the CD's are being re-released soon - as George has said - what are your thoughts. Do you also have the experience that most of the time Bob Geldoff is named as THE man of these types of events, whereas actually our George was the first to organize a benefit concert of this size and such a line-up.
And what he did with EC and Dylan. We will never know how these two would have come out of their 'problems' and 'silent life' then if the Maistro had not put them on stage.

I wish I was there in Madison Square Garden to witness that event firsthand. I've seen the movie a couple of times and bought the album shortly after it's release.
Having such a line-up as they did was very awesome. Some of the biggest names in the recording business performing together.
Unfortunately, a misunderstanding between George and Yoko caused John to back out of appearing. Also, without having any formal rehearsal with everyone who was to perform, George stated; "That whole show was a stroke of luck... it's amazing we managed to get anything on tape."

I was at one at Madison Square Garden. I was 17 or 18 years old at the time and a group of us went. We sat in the upper section, but it was was still a huge rush to hear this live.

What was the misunderstanding? I thought George didn't want Yoko on stage.

Yeah, I actually do feel lucky and privileged in a way to have experienced those years first hand, and those Beatles and other British invasion records coming out when I was a kid.

In the book The Quite One it is described that in fact John wanted to go on stage even though Yoko was not allowed by George, but John and Yoko had a row and John left for London.

Too bad he didn't just participate in the concert. Why wasn't Paul there?

He said he would appear only if George agreed to sign a piece of paper ending the Beatles partnership. George said "No way, Jose." So Paul and Linda decided not to show up. Naughty, naughty! http://www.beatlelinks.net/ubb/smilies/nono.gif

Yes, George has been in control of Paul since 1970. He did not invite him for the Concerts, Paul was allowed to do some backing vocals on All Those Years Ago (very backing indeed, you can hardly hear them) and George even directed a lot of the Anthology.

It's possible that since George was the young kid to them early on, they would look at him that way in later years.

The difference is the period.
Paul maybe 1962 - 1969
George 1969 - 2001 and moving on http://www.beatlelinks.net/ubb/smilies/wave.gif

I mean legally in a business sense.
(The last post wouldn't come up for me to edit it so I had to make another one.)

Capitol Records have announced the release of this album on November 6. That is probably the re-mastered version. No additional info is mentioned yet.

Interesting way of putting it--
"George has been in control of Paul since
1970"... And if this is really true, in a
strange way, I say cheers to George for that!
My reasons there would be: 1. Look at all
the control bestowed upon George from Paul
(and John) in the early days; and 2. Watch
that "rauw"-(correct spelling?) that Paul
and George had during "Let it Be"--(perhaps
it was partially George's way of saying,"It's
now MY time buddy"!! (Hey, ya never know-http://www.beatlelinks.net/ubb/smilies/images/icons/smile.gif
